Summer 13

Andre Schurrle (Bayer Leverkusen, £18m), Marco van Ginkel (Vitesse Arnhem £9m), Cristian Cuevas (O'Higgins, £3m), Mark Schwarzer (Chelsea, free), Stipe Perica (NK Zadar, undisclosed), Willian (Anzhi, £32m), Samuel Eto'o (Anzhi, free), Christian Atsu (Porto, 3.5m).

Total 65.5 million

January 14

Bertrand Traore (Association Jeunes Espoirs De Bobo-Dioulasso, undisclosed), Nemanja Matic (Benfica, £21m), Mohamed Salah (Basel £11m), Kurt Zouma (Saint Etienne, £12.5m)

Total 44.5 million

65.5+44.5m = 110 million

Looking back do you think that chelsea should have spend this money better

Andre Schurrle (Bayer Leverkusen, £18m), - Inconsistent and a bench warmer for 18m?? Squad depth tho

Marco van Ginkel (Vitesse Arnhem £9m), - Unfortunate injury ruined involvement this season

Cristian Cuevas (O'Higgins, £3m), - On loan

Mark Schwarzer (Chelsea, free), - Solid signing

Stipe Perica (NK Zadar, undisclosed), - On loan

Willian (Anzhi, £32m), - Seems overpriced, doesn't offer much beyond work rate

Samuel Eto'o (Anzhi, free), - Good for a free signing

Christian Atsu (Porto, 3.5m). - A buy now sell for profit signing

Bertrand Traore (Association Jeunes Espoirs De Bobo-Dioulasso, undisclosed), - Promising loanee

Nemanja Matic (Benfica, £21m), - Great player

Mohamed Salah (Basel £11m), - Can't even get a look in

Kurt Zouma (Saint Etienne, £12.5m) - One for the future with great potential

For 110 m

Cavani - 55m

Griezmann - 25m

Matic - 21m

Apart from matic and willian, all other signings seems overpriced subs or loanees

Your opinions please...

Proof of the pudding will be where we finish at the end of the season.

Win the league or CL, then we did a masterful job

Win neither and we will have spurned a glorious chance, especially in the league.

Posted

I disagree, the proof will more likely be by the end of next season, possibly even the one after.

Why have you not mentioned our transfers out and prices we got for them ?

Mata £37m

KDB £15m

Bruma £2.5m

= £55m

The other £55m is invested in young players that are on loan.

Well Jose has said that all along, his aim is towards the next season with our goal of top 4 being all but completed already.

And i guess I will agree with you so long as it is not Liverpool that beat us to the league title. Missing out to City is one thing, but there is no way, with Jose in charge and the amount invested in this side, that Liverpool should be finishing ahead of us.

Far too early to tell, the only questionable buys have been the massive outlays on Willian and Schurrle who are 25 and 23 respectively. It may seem like a lot now but they can give a lot of years to this club and both have fantastic potential in my opinion.

We haven't even seen the likes of Zouma, Salah and Van Ginkel yet while Cuevas/Perica/Atsu/Traore are all at the very least going to be sold for a tidy profit in a few years time.

So I think to compare spending 110m on a bunch of young players to spending it on someone like Cavani is completely pointless. Maybe in 5 years we can make that evaluation but we didn't spend that money to win everything this season, we spent it to be a dominant force over the next decade.

Posted

Well none of those players, maybe bar Matic and maybe Schurrle, were worth their price tag. We haven't even used Salah, so 11 million for a sub is expensive. As for the others, we haven't seen much of them, so the jury is out on them.

I don't think we did. I don't see anything wise about spending £32 million on a winger who's main quality seems to be how hard he works, or £18 million for a player that has spent the majority of the season on the bench ( even though i think he should be playing ), or £11 on someone who hasn't even played 90 minutes yet.

We've spent money on young players with potential and when we buy a striker it has to be someone we can build our team around and maintain success for years to come. The players that don't work out will still be young enough that they can be sold on without losing money if not even making a profit and at very least stops rivals buying them cheap.

I think we could of spent better to try and win the league this year but it's got to be long term project, our first investment built a team that has lasted almost 10 years I'm still optimistic that were on the right track to become a force in Europe again.

One point which has been overlooked so far is that our summer spending turned a good team into a good squad. Last year it was pretty much the same front four in every match. By the final few months of the season they were running on fumes. Willian and Schurrle may not be spectacular, but they have been useful and allow us to rotate. Likewise for Eto'o.

The only area we really slipped up was failing to bring in a top striker but it's not as if we didn't try.

Well much of the signings are for years to come too like Salah, Zouma, van Ginkel, Atsu and Traore.

The two ones that I struggle with are Schurrle and Willain. Good squad players to have but at around £40 million combined you expect 2 classy players IMO. Still young enough to improve of course.

The proof will be in a few years time to see where we are.

Going all out for Rooney was a tat naive IMO, United were just never going to sell him to a rival.

We really should have been pursuing other options, the striker situation has been a problem for far too long.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I'm so glad we didn't get Rooney...His massive wage bill will now be an anvil round his and Moye's neck, also, and I realise I am in a minority here, but I just don't rate him that highly...

Pundits and commentators are always saying he's the only one who really puts himself about and looks like he cares, when all I can see is a bad tempered, raging bull who charges round the pitch swearing at the officials (although never getting booked for it) and glaring at his team-mates...

Willian has possibly less excuses but certainly don't think schurrle can be judged until he has more game time, I think they will improve and could see a lot more from both of them next season. Hazard has come on the longer he's been in England and when you look at ozil,a proven world class talent, it puts it in perspective, it's tough coming to the prem

Bit early to be writing some players off, most of our summer signings our under the age of 25 so they still have development to be made. They didn't sign 1 year contracts they signed 5 year deals surely its better to review in then than writing some players off now. Jose already said next season will be Salah season to show what he can do and also Mourinho teams usually get better in his 2nd and 3rd season.

£110 million and no striker of note is a bit risky though when we lost our only proven goalscorer.

Absolutely. Jose has spoken about long term plans since coming back and signings have reflected that. All going well, this is a squad that will be consistently competing for titles in the coming years and, with some additions to it, hopefully winning trophies.

We've seen in the past that some players take a season to properly settle in (adjusting to a new country, language, lifestyle, even a new way of playing).

I think its too early to tell with some of the signings but I also think there are as many problems with squad now as there were last season.

We still have no centre forward.

We still lack a quality playmaker in centre midfield.

With the sale of mata, and the decline of lampard, we only have one genuine match winner in hazard.

On the plus side, we now have a top manager who has improved us defensively and mentally.

We now have options from the bench.

Hopefully next season we will have the striker situation sorted, we will sort the midfield out, oscar will perform at higher level consistently, and willian or schurrle will step up and start taking some of the burden if hazard.

at the end of last season id have been happy with cavani, matic , and willian/schurrle.

Now weve lost kdb, mata and probably cole and lampard, im hoping for a quality centre forward, centre midfielder, and left back.

Thing is despite spending 110 million we still require as you say mate a striker, creative midfielder and a left back.

How much will that all cost?

I'm assuming we will need to sell to buy too so who goes? Lukaku, Courtious, Marin, Moses, Piazon ect?

I say creative midfielder although I do Van Ginkel fits this profile but who knows how he will kick on from that injury.

With regards the midfielder, I dont think we utilised what had, I think oscar or de bruyne would have been more than capable of playing next to matic, which would have allowed mata and hazard to kick on their relationship from last season.

People will argue about putting players in unfamiliar positions, but the vast majority of top quality creative midfielders started out as number 10's, and I think we would have looked a better footballing side this season, had we gone with technique over physicality.

In an ideal world we will recoup some money from torres, ba, marin, moses, and hopefully mikel, add it to the mata money, and the budget, and we bring in shaw 20m kroos 25m and a centre forward for around 35m.

It's a tough one, I think selling Mata was a mistake especially now Oscars forms went to pot and we are struggling for goals.

We solved one problem with buying Matic but have another now with Lamps getting older as that dynamic attacking central mid is no longer something we possess.

We have plenty of defensive type midfielders now with lamps, matic and Mikel but Ramires isn't too great passing wise while MVG is young and just getting back from a season ender.

Kroos ideally but that's fantasy stuff in reality, Pogba? probably not but we do need something.

Striker is the number one though we just can't go again with Torres, Ba and Eto'o we just can't.

We should make quite a few quid with sales I reckon but we NEED to get it right in the positions we lack.

We should have bought a 'main' striker in the Summer. I'm happy for Eto'o to be a 1/2 year stop gap but we're really feeling the lack of firepower up front this season. More so than the last IMO.

However I appreciate that it's a case of who is available?? We went after Rooney but they were never going to sell. This year is obviously World Cup year so we'll have to wait a little longer to see who we bid for which is frustrating.

However, getting Matic back was a fantastic piece if business.

Honestly, this might not be politically correct to say on here, but I think we should get rid of our 4 Brazilians and bring in stronger players suited to the Premier League and physical style of play. At the moment, I just don't personally feel any of them are cutting it right now. Willian and Ramires seem to be all energy and nothing much else; Oscar just seems too weak for my liking and it would be better to bring in a much more physical presence into Midfield, and David Luiz is only good enough when playing in the midfield role, which Is a position that could be occupied by a new acquisition who is more suitable.

What do guys think? If all our Brazilians were to leave, do you believe they could be easily replaceable?
