Gallas retirement accounced

Featured Replies

See that William Gallas has announced his retirement

Mixed feelings really. I thank him for the Chelsea years and without a doubt one of the best defenders we have had a the club. Him and Terry together were  one of the best defensive partnerships I had seen and he won two league titles with us.

But of course he left under a cloud which was a real shame

Good luck William I supose

Of course the title should say announced but I cant edit it !

Part of the Premier League's all time best defense.

He was sublime for us in Jose's first two seasons and who can forget that belter he scored against Spurs.

We got the better deal when he left as part of the Ashley Cole deal but I like to think we had, had his best years out of him by then.

Billy Gallas, played next to the best ever EPL defender in his prime, wanted money over trophies, went to Le Arse. What a prat !

Forgot about that goal... yes that was amazing, very drunk in the MHU I fell down a  few steps celebrating

Another player with mixed emotions internally for me.  He was great with Terry, and then he was still good when he was moved out to LB for a time, even though he didn't seem pleased about it.

We then got Ashley as part of the deal, so that's a good thing too as Cole became a fantastic player for us.

I don't know how much to read into all the supposed stuff he said when he left, but he didn't come back and kiss the badge of an opposing club in front of the fans (in fact, didn't he score an own goal when we played Le Arse?)

He scored against us in 2007 and we lost that game 1-0 if i remember the year correctly.

Loved him when he was here, couldn't stand him when he left. He completely lost it when he left us, that's what happens when you join Arsenal

At least he can say he was part of the best defense the Premier League has ever seen. Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Gallas in 2004-05 were as close to a perfect defence as you are going to get.

You have to include Bridge in that list. He played a fair number of games, and I think he played a lot when we went on that run of letting in in 3 goals in about 16 games. I will check, though.

EDIT: Yes, Bridge played most of the games in that run, which saw 10 consecutive clean sheets. Gallas and JT were at CB, which shows up the people who claim JT was only good that year because he had Carvalho alongside him.

That defence was so good that even Glen Johnson and Robert Huth managed to play and still keep a clean sheet once or twice. (Johnson of course played when the run of clean sheets was ended at Norwich).

Gallas just amazes me. Chelsea, to Arsenal, to Spurs. He just couldn't care less about rivalries, clearly.

Solid for us and like many others I wasn't very happy when I found out we would be swapping him for Cole + £5m, but what a deal that turned out to be for us.

Great player for us but I never really warmed to him at all. Always though he was a ****, even when he was our player. Apparently he threatened to start scoring own goals for fun if the club didn't let him leave?

I remember when the Cole-Gallas deal happened I was well annoyed and thought Arsenal had got the better end of the deal. Evidently not! Gallas' petulant meltdown at St. Andrews in 2008 was absolutely hilarious.

Brilliant defender, one of our best..forget the own goal bollox, some pr spin from the club when things got tetchy....still he made a blunder kicking off over contract talks etc...although he had a point about being played out of position...His record alongside Jt was scary, but carvalho came in and was Jose's man...but Mourinho summed it up better than anyone on Friday, when he talked about how awesome galas was

To be fair to him we never really got the full story on that supposed own goal threat, just one side said he did threaten and the other said he didn't.

A random woman in front of us turned round and hugged me! Emotional.
