Diego "the guv'nor" Costa

Featured Replies

We cannot lose Costa, talk about bad vibes.

Even if he plays, I can't imagine that wearing a mask won't affect him in some way.

Are the masks custom made to mold to their faces?

The fact that Costa has played through injury and now through a broken nose sends an unequivocal message that he is not lazy, he is not apathetic. Deep down is a passionate hard worker. The difficult task is to bring that out. If you know how to motivate him and give him the positive reinforcement and constructively presented criticism he thrives on, he will go to the ends of the earth for you and for the team.

I think Costa has been misunderstood by many, including myself, and probably including Jose.

Preaching to the converted, I'm a huge fan of his. Hope he scores tomorrow.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do these masks protect a broken nose.I mean, if you got a hefty elbow full on the mask, would this not impact with said broken nose & be extremely painful etc..

I think they stabilise the bones while they're so active.

Yeah, I'm curious about that too. From the picture, it definitely doesn't look like it would protect his nose from major impact.

It's probably the impact of bone on bone that does the damage, like an elbow or head banging into the nose, it seems to offer protection in these clashes.

surprised not been mentioned more today. he was running after everything and anything, those masks (or the broken nose) actually seem to spur him on more.

His super powers

This pisses me off. Why did Costa have to fly to Milan to get a mask fitted? No doubt on a private charter jet due to the urgency. It's a waste of Costa's time and energy when he needs all the rest he can get, and flying with a freshly broken nose is potentially painful given that flying with a non-broken nose can already be painful.

More than that, this is a wasteful use of fan money. There is a lot of wasteful spending, and this is a small sliver in the overall budget, but it doesn't benefit anyone, and all these minor expenses add up.

Why not have all the players fitted for masks at the beginning of the season? Even with a charter flight to Milan (are there really no mask makers in England?), the cost will still be less than sending each injured player individually when the need arises. They can get a bulk discount, and players won't have to fly to Milan (imagine if this happened during practice at a location far from Milan) when their time is much better spent training or resting. Plus, I'm pretty sure getting a mold taken of your face is better when you don't have a broken nose.

? Because he's an elite athlete? Because the specialism is not in the UK? Because the thorough insurance covers it? Send him to the local A&E next time.

Each mask you will notice is slightly different depending on the injury, hence Costa's for a broken nose will need to be different than that of Azpilicueta's for a fractured cheek bone so bulk buying 100 different types of mask just in case probably won't save us any money especially when you consider factors like swelling might make the mask less likely to fit.

What a very odd thing to be that angry about. We should save more money and not send zouma to the best specialist in the world but to Dr smith in Hammersmith. Might not be very good but he's not going to be waste fans money.

Perhaps we should have got Diego one of those masks swingers wear.

The guy looks sharper, fitter and just in better shape than he has done all season, and it shows on the pitch. He wasn't making those runs earlier in the season and I think it's nothing to do with the coach and everything to do with him not having a spare tyre.

Which begs the question, what the hell was he playing at turning up to the first game of the season so pathetically unprepared?

I read that towards the end of Jose's tenure, Diego started putting in two-a-days in order to get his fitness up and it's brilliant that we're reaping the benefits of that now.

But why wasn't this Diego wearing the shirt when the season kicked-off? Why did we have to wait until December for a guy who is paid so much to be in the shape that he should be?

Love the guy but so many 'what ifs?' and it's frustrating as hell.
