Chelsea in for Falcao?

Featured Replies

Griezmann, benteke, both in excess of 30 mill and far bigger risks then falcau and both would do a lot more to prevent the development of Bamford and Co..

If we didn't have Costa and remy the risk on this one would be much higher. I like benteke but not enough to pay 30 million for him and have him back up Costa. Since we were first linked with Griezmann I've tried to watch him quite a lot and honestly not that impressed, again he's not going to play up front on his own. There is a serious shortage of top top strikers available at the moment, so renting Falcao for a year isn't bad business

Barak, if you're talking strictly finances here, getting Benteke for 30m is a better business than getting Falcao on loan. Benteke will get a four or five year contract and that transfer fee will be spread over those years, and since he's only 24 giving him a long term contract makes sense. If we compare Benteke's potential fee plus wages per year vs Falcao's loan fee plus wages per year, the Colombian will cost the club significantly more. Also, once his loan is done, whether he did well or flopped, he isn't ours anymore. If he did great and we want him to stay we'd have to pay a transfer fee and give him few more years of a guaranteed contract (bear in mind, Falcao's turning 30 next February).

As for preventing the development of Bamford, let's see if he can cut it at the PL level before opening a spot for him in the CFC squad. He needs playing time and he won't get it at CFC at this moment in time. I know, it's difficult for young players to make it at Chelsea but if he's THAT good, he'll make it.

There's a lot of assumptions in there, first and foremost is that Benteke is actually good for us. If not then we're stuck with an expensive player that we'd either struggle to move on, sell at a loss or keep around hoping he'd come good.

If we got him then you're looking at him costing about £11 million per season based on his first contract being 5 years. Falcao isn't significantly more (about £3-4 million).

It's not just Bamford though. It's Traore, Solanke and possibly even Abraham as well. Plus you've got whichever players are on the market next year because in my opinion, there's a dearth of good options out there. Benteke could be decent, Griezmann could be too although he'd be our second most expensive player ever and then....well that's it.

Someone said they didn't want a stop-gap but to be honest, I think that could be exactly what we need.

I know most of you see this as a gamble worth taking up, but what worries me is that when we say 'back up' to Costa we need to remember that Costa is going to be a gamble as well this season, if we're not careful we could quite easily find ourselves with Costa in and out of the team with injury, and Falcao struggling to score, not hard to imagine considering that's what's been happening over the last 6 months or so, so every need to be worried about this signing, even if it's only a 12 month loan.

A lot depends on what happens with Remy and who may replace him, but I'm not confident we will get better.

His downside is his name and salary. Why? We lose a lot of money AND the club will pressure Jose to play him even if someone else clearly is in better form. That is fact we've witnessed over years. Sheva, Torres, Sutton..

This seems very much a Jose signing though. He's been talking about him and helping him regain his form.

Even if we selected people based on how much they cost us, he still costs less than Costa will. Also I don't think you can blame this regime for what happened with Sutton...who was incidentally dropped in favour of Weah for much of the latter half of the 1999-2000 season if memory serves.

Originally I was very much against this deal, but having thought it through I'm kind of ok about it. Once Dybala and Icardi went off the market I couldn't see any other striker of good enough quality that would accept being a back up striker. Benteke and Higuain would surely want guaranteed first team football. So that really only left Falcao, Griezmann who is more of an AM or lastly Bamford who has no experience at all in the PL.

If it's true that Falcao has taken a pay cut to £130,000 and there is no obligation to buy at the end of the season, AND Remy stays, then I'm ok with this. But if Remy is sold on and Falcao is our primary back up then I'll be very p*ssed off. Trusting Falcao as the main back up would be foolish, I doubt whether he can ever rediscover what he once was.

Maybe soon the tiitle will be someting along the lines of ''Falcao - The Groundhog Day Thread''?

Bit off topic but I see Cuadrado got a good rap and neither Oscar or Ramires in Brazil squad. Injured I guess? Oscar seems to be quite quiet about his injury which of course also seemed to keep him mostly out of the last couple of months in England

how was he against brazil?

I thought he was poor and I think Mourinho would have substituted him right after he decided to shoot from long range instead of exploiting the 3 on 2 situation in first half.

Agreed mate. Very quiet. Showed some decent movement but was generally short of the required standard.

Subbed after 69 minutes is indicative of his all round play - did not offer enough and mirrored that which we had become accustomed to during his time at united.

Hopefully he can do a job in our system as and when required. I do not foresee him being a first choice unless circumstances dictate. Fingers crossed.

Am I the only one excited at the prospect of having 2 freakishly good strikers even if one has had a bad year coming off an injury? Benteke will just be a ba or a remi, dies the job and we like him but not reaching what falcao can if Jose gets him firing on all cylinders, you have to take a shot on a striker of that class especially as top strikers are impossible to buy right now. If you want to challenge in Europe we need something special not a benteke, we need quality in and worst case scenario he is replacing a 37 year old striker with 4 goals, I'm sure he can better that are the very least and we didn't do that bad last season did we?

Oscar is injured and wont take part in Copa America. Ramires probably just didn't fit the squad.

If Falcao was freakishly good then we'd actually have 2 very good strikers. At current form no.

I hope to be proven wrong but I think hell turn out to be a Torres or at best a Crespo

If Falcao turns out to be a Crespo, I'll be delighted.

Crespo, let's not forget, scored 20 times in 49 appearances the club and it was personal problems (his wife was unable to settle in London following a miscarriage) that compelled Crespo to push for a return to Italy, putting his family first, in other words. Which in this day and age is a quality to be commended. Despite these concerns over his wife, Crespo was the consummate professional on the pitch, never giving less than 100%.

Falcao won't turn out to be another Torres, if only because the odds are stacked massively against him being here for anything like as long as Torres. Not unless he somehow manages to regain the form of a couple of season or so ago. Furthermore, Falcoa is being brought in as backup, or maybe, just maybe, to rekindle a partnership with Diego Costa, which (and I've just looked this up) at one time consisted mostly of Costa acting as provider for Falcao, but as time went on, the roles were reversed.

Falcao acting as backup striker and/or provider rather than out and out goalscorer may not be such a bad idea after all. Time will tell.
