Charity shield August 1

Featured Replies

It'll always be the same with the Charity/Community Shieild. When you win, it;s the first major trophy of the season. Lose and it's nothing more than a glorified friendly.

The real business begins next week.

Forgetaboutit.

The thing is that everyone will now say The Jose curse has been removed from le arse - Also I think this win will galvanize le arse mindset to challenge for the title, especially w/ Cech as their netminder - before we could expect gifts from their goalkeepers or defenders - today they had their moments but they held on & didn't concede - that is a worrisome trait that I see developing for le arse - also this was a Derby match more than a Charity Shield - it's been a while since I witnessed a Chelsea loss to le arse & yes it hurts

The result is meaningless, it is a friendly after all and Arse had started their preseason training much earlier so they were understandably fitter than us and that played a big part in the way the game went down.

My concerns have more to do with the fact that we're clearly in need of some reinforcements. I don't buy into Jose's statements on how happy is with the current squad, I'm sure behind closed doors he's saying something different to the board. So far we have been sleepwalking through the transfer window and haven't addressed any of the issues. I'm afraid I don't share the optimism of so many here, I think we have to spend and I'm genuinely surprised how quiet we've been. Will probably drag the Stones saga for a few more weeks and will walk away with nothing. So much for the new PL money and big sponsorship deal.

You know all pre season I've thought we started to late, last season we started really early and having a pre season without much travelling was a huge help too. I do wonder why we started so late.

Let us see what Remy is really made of start of the season, hope he can keep that scoring form of his, that's what we need.

anyway willian and matic is my co-motm, what a huge transformation willian has been since we bought cuadrado and today seems like he has taken a step up on another level, and with matic well what do you expect from arguably the best dm in the world, i thought he pretty much bossed cazorla and ozil and also contributed offensively fighting for the ball non stop

I thought we played okay. You have take your chances at the highest level, especially against a suprisingly resolute arsenal defence. The 2 chances ramires and hazard missed should have been put away which alters the game completely.

I don't think the pointless end of season tour did us any favours, especially as the season is an earlier start this year.

Going into the new season not having strengthened any department has shades of Carlo's second season when we ended up panic buying in January. As good as we were last season we looked jaded towards the end of it, new signings not only freshen the squad but also challenge the existing players to improve.

It seems post and ore season are been used as a tool to build the brand rather than to actually help with the season. I think the balance is wrong. For me it's always about the team not the brand. Although I can understand in this day and age the brand is more important.

I agree on the latter to, it's been a worry of mine. We messed up big time in 10-11 and Im worried we've done the same this season. It's early doors I know and this isn't based on anything today just a feeling I've got.

Not the best result today but frustrated more than anything. We weren't great but then neither were Arsenal in my opinion.

We just didn't have that killer instinct today and seemed at times that we didn't pick the right pass. It's still early so I'm not worried but would have been nice to win!

Thought Willy was superb throughout, Matic was a beast and Courtois had a good game. Also thought the defence was pretty good throughout despite the goal and a couple of breakaways.

Now there's the strikers. Don't think Remy did himself any favours today. I rate him highly but he can't be offside that much! Falcao had some good touches, link up play and ran well so hopefully if we give him chances we will get goals.

That said, cannot wait to have Diego back.

Yeah I've been banging the same drum too. I think it's been a bit of a f**k up. Late start and pretty much straight to the U.S. for 3 high profile games. They look knackered if you ask me.

And then we have this absurd Fiorentina match 3 days before our first match. Im sure it's all been planned like this for a reason but it makes no sense to me. We are clearly not ready. We will prob make it past Swansea but it's a hell of a match after that so it's got to all come together soon.

Agreed

I think our game changed when Oscar came on. He had a lot of space in the center and he used it properly. He created two great chances, his free-kick was pretty good. It was seen like he played Hazard's role.

Oscar seemed different today on the ball. He looked easier on the ball and was even skinning players better than Hazard was, and as you said, caused them real pain.

He looked like he had more pace as well. The one problem for me with Oscar last year was how he would beat his man but seemed to easily cut inside last Bellerin today, not the greatest defender but quick.

Really do think we need to utilise his all round ability a bit deeper though. He's a great passer and could help keep that midfield ticking over. For someone with such a slight frame he's also a good tackler.

Arse won comm shield against City last season and look what happened there...I actually thought we played better than I thought we would given late start to preseason and amount of travelling we'd done compared to the arse...if we'd taken our chances we would have got a draw, which I think would have been fair on balance of play...while it would be wrong to say all is rosy (it's not), I think we should wait to see how we get on v Swansea and City...I'd take four points now that's for sure...we are clearly not fit yet and Costa's hamstring problem is a real headache we can do without...still had to laugh at arsenal fans going nuts cos of this glorified friendly win...they really are a tragic bunch

My thoughts too. If they put those away we probably win. Oh well its a a glorified friendly

Strange seeing Cech in the opponent's goal and realising just how imposing he is.

As others have said, Matic and Willian were excellent, Fabregas had flashes, Hazard was subdued.

The real problem is midfield, we still haven't worked it out. I've got high hopes for Loftus-Cheek and there's a place up for grabs if he impresses Jose. He must be the reason we haven't gone out and bought a top-notch midfielder because a star performer alongside Matic in the pivot would take us up a notch.

Falcao was a worry for me. Same as he was at Utd. Easily muscled out of it. We missed Costa, big-time.

We brought on Moses and Falcao and that showed we haven't really strengthened the squad, which seems a strange decision but we have to have faith in Jose, he clearly has a lot of faith in this lot and thinks they'll get better, and maybe he has a lot of faith in one or two youngsters, although I won't hold my breath.

Cuadrado? Was he on the bench? Writing's got to be on the wall. £23m and Moses picked ahead of him. If we get a work permit for Kenedy he's clearly on his way out.

Personally, I don't mind losing these sort of games, I always think the more pre-season games you lose the more the manager will see the weaknesses, rather than getting a false sense of security or feeling overconfident. You never know, it may lead the board to getting their chequebook out, maybe we'll go all out for Stones now you never know, although we really seem to be lacking an attacker, somebody to take a little bit of the pressure off Hazard. Somebody to give us an extra dimension in attack. Oscar and Willian are good players but they're a little bit predictable and I thought our performance lacked a spark, although we played quite well and were unlucky to lose.

Never nice losing to that lot but hey ho. Let them feel over-confident. You could see by Jose's face on the touchline how much he hates losing and that bodes well for the season ahead. I still feel we'll do it.

We still have the best manager in the Prem.

As a neutral and let's face it, you need the objective view occasionally, I thought Arsenal looked more dangerous when they broke free.

As an England fan, Oxlade Chamberlain looks great and I hope he can do that for England. You have to admit that was a good goal.

I think Cech when called upon had more confidence than Courtois.

Disappointed in Mourinho. It's not all about you. What's that stuff waiting to shake the hands of Arsenal players? Probably pissed off that Wenger snubbed him at the end. But given he thinks Wenger is a c**t and makes it plain that's what he thinks, why would Wenger want to shake hands with him?

I understand the media putting the spin on things as well as Arsenal fans but why are even people here banging on about Jose losing his record to Wenger?

Last time I checked, pre-season games didn't count towards anything like unbeaten records or goal tallies.

6 subs allowed and straight to penalties after 90 mins = pre-season friendly.
