Martin Samuel follows up his piece on why Chelsea have gone backwards by standing still...

‘There is a lot of complacency on here. Why do they need to improve a winning team? Here’s why. Say you and I have a road race. We’ve both got ten-year-old Ford Sierras. You win. We agree to meet the next week. I turn up in a Ferrari. Now, technically, your Sierra isn’t broke and doesn’t need fixing. It’s a winning car. It won last time. But, suddenly, circumstances have changed. And that is what has happened in the summer. Circumstances have changed. Now I don’t think too many Ferraris have been bought but to act as if all other factors remain consistent, just because Chelsea haven’t changed, is ludicrous....’

Its more like we won the race with our very consistent and reliable Porsche but still probably one of if not the fastest car in the paddoc
Man city have an aging TVR very fast but won't consistently finish the race.
Arsenal have a very pretty Aston Martin but it just can't quite compete and never seems to get through the gritty section of the race
Man U  have a very expensive Bentley driven by a mad man who keeps chopping and changing parts of his car mid race which and the car just isn't built to be able to compete with the other cars in the race

Chelsea have given the car a little TLC but didn't really pay much attention to the practice laps so might start the race a bit rusty.
Man City have tried adding a little sterling type turbo but will the TVR manage to avoid breaking down usually it manages to finish ever other race so they have a good chance
Arsenal have added a top quality goalkeeping finish to there Aston Martin keeping it looking nice a pretty but haven't improved their engine room and they still don't look to have that robustness to get over that gritty section of the season.
And Man U have continued changing body parts and have added some steal to the car midsection but they still haven't realised that there car just doesn't have the defensive body work or goal scoring finish to seriously compete against the fast scoring TVR or the consistently boring Porsche.

That analogy would work if all teams were equal, or Ford Sierras as Samuel put it, last season. We were clearly the best team last year. If we were a Mclaren last year and everyone else was Porches, if they turn up to race in Ferraris this year we'll still win the race. Nobody knows if the the other teams have done enough to overtake us. This season will be closer for sure but we're still the best team

Mourinho seemed to hint at more business today in his presser. Was asked about lack of activity in the market and this physio stuff worrying the fans and responded by saying

"dont worry about the market, we have until August 31st"  "We will do things when the time is right to do so"

Unveils Joey Barton and Steve Sidwell just to troll us all...

Suicide rate will go up

Remember this in 2011?

'In an interview with French magazine So Foot, Barton is quoted as saying: "Honestly, I think I'm the best [English midfielder]. Luka Modric and Samir Nasri are very good, but in terms of English players ... well, Jack Wilshere isn't bad, but Frank Lampard's on the way down and Steven Gerrard's been injured a lot.

"I'm English and I love playing for my country. Maybe the people at the top have a problem with me. I don't know. But the trouble I had was four years ago. They should be able to forgive, shouldn't they?"'

On the face of things, the answer to this thread is a resounding yes.

I think we are 4 signings off having a squad that I would be confident to retain a title.

I get the feeling it's all going to be too little, too late this window, and we spend the next 4 months saying we need x player or y player, when it should have been addressed this summer.

City already spent 50m on Sterling and apparently Otamendi and KDB are on the way, too which makes it close to 135-140m on just three players. Not sure, if they're done after that.

We're looking like paupers by comparison, both on and off the pitch.

Another hugely disappointing performance today. Things haven't been right for some time. We won the PL last season, but even then we limped over the line and it's hard to recall too many convincing performances during 2015. It's what makes our lack of transfer activity so puzzling and adding Falcao to a tired and predictable looking line-up, is looking more and more like a very bad bit of business.

We need a couple of major signings before the window shuts - something to really give everyone a lift. Otherwise Jose is going to have no option but to show a bit a faith in some of the youngsters and put a few in. If we carry on under-performing like we have been, we will be in real danger of missing out on the top 4. I could handle that if the squad progress, but not if we continue to play the same old faces - Jose's favourites. For some time now, their performances do not justify constant selection.

Looks like City learned from their mistakes last year when they didnt think they needed to reinforce their squad last season. Seams we are about to learn ours

I just wish the club would stop messing about with the kids. Either fully integrate them and give them minutes or provided useful players.

Agreed. The f**k was the point with Cuadrado today? Are you telling me Traore couldnt have done that?

Exactly. Either integrate them properly or buy some proper players. At the minute we've got litterialy about 15 players that Jose uses and trusts. Outside of the starting 11, Jose will play Zouma, Mikel, Falcao, Begovic...that's it.

Ridiculous.
