Papy Djilobodji

From Stones to this Papy fellow. Think about that for a moment. There's no papering over the cracks.

Papy cost us next to nothing, basically chump change. We'll flog him off in January or the summer if he's sh*t. I think we'll sign Stones eventually though.

Right now how much better is Stones than Cahill or Zouma? Papy is 4th choice so unless we need him to start this leaves the 'promising young CB X' option still open. Even if he is Ben-Haim bad he likely isnt going to be playing much unless two players are unavailable.

If he does well this good be a great bit of business for us. As said already, considering the fee it wont take much for him to make good on it.

The transfer was a last minute piece of business just for the sake of signing a defender (any defender) to placate the fans.  This is a Board signing as Mourinho wouldn't bother with such mediocrity.  In short, signing Papy (and Hector) was totally unnecessary.

Totally pointless if this signing doesn't create competition for places to relieve a mentally fatigued first 11. Can't see that it will help or Jose dropping any of his untouchables to risk playing Papy? I may be wrong but I just can't see it ... Hector has to be the most bizarre signing I have ever witnessed ... Totally pointless ... 100% wtf!

As mentioned this is about numbers. What fans has this placated? We needed another defender to have a viable squad, we got one. I dont think anyone is happy to have Papy over Stones. I think most of us assume we'll be buying another CB within a year

This is the kind of signing that fuels the argument for tightening of import quotas.

As for the Hector signing, if we feel he could improve enough. He should at 23 be training with our squad and not immediately loaned back. Or is this just financial doping of the championship?

This was a last minute signing when the board knew the Stones transfer wasn't going through so let's not kid about numbers here. If you want numbers, there's always the youth team.

Nantes chairman has stated we were doing this transfer 2 weeks ago, so it's not a last minute signing.

What if I told everyone his current level is pretty much as good as Zouma (who obviously has more potential) our scouts are normally pretty good with defenders, the hector guy is just to be sold on, but this chap isn't too bad at all and has bags of pace and power...we may all be pleasantly surprised

I highly doubt it.  Zouma was regarded as one of the brightest young defenders in France even before his transfer to Chelsea.

Papy spent more than half of his career in Ligue 2.  Moreover, he was roundly rejected by Bournemouth, Norwich, Sunderland, Celtic and Celta Vigo.

Also Mourinho won't play him as he won't be dislodging any of the untouchables.

Look, i'll support the guy if and when he's ever on the pitch for us, but let's be honest here, he's just another Minerio, who might make 1 or 2 appearances and then he'll disappear off the face of the earth again. He's nowhere near good enough to be playing regularly for a side aiming to win the PL and the CL

So the whole Stones saga was just a masterful distraction to cover up the deal for our real target Papy. Well played, Chelsea board, well played.

I expect to he was plan b......stones I mean. Papy was always obviously our no.1 target.

To give balance to this bit that keeps being repeated, there are also reports we and Dortmund have monitored him since 13/14, when he had a 20m euro price tag. Also in 2014 both Arsenal and Marseille expressed interest in him. So hes not quite this unknown player some are making him out to be.

as with hector, this bloke is unlikely to see much, if any, first team football.

manager's presser pre everton should be interesting. wonder if jose had any say in this at all.

bench fodder.

Does seem to be either the board saying "No more blockbuster deals, make do with this" or Jose making the point that this is what you get (sh*te) when you don't back his transfer targets.

Most of you guys don't know him, but you can easily look up his Squawka and Whoscored stats to see he's got very good defensive abilities. Both Squawka and Whoscored rate him as Nantes best player two years running...

Looks to have had a poor season last year going by the guys on BT this morning.

Most people are surprised he got this move.

Didn't watch him play last season, but not sure why he has a bad rap for last season. Statswise he was good - 28th best player in Ligue 1 according to Whoscored, 8,3 clearances per game, 12 defensive actions per game, by far the best player on his team. Looks to me like he was one of the sole performers on what was a very poor team, but gets blamed for not being able to be a one-man-army.

Just repeating what the French guy said who I assume did watch him last season.
