Papy Djilobodji

Featured Replies

From Stones to this Papy fellow. Think about that for a moment. There's no papering over the cracks.

Get a grip

This signing isn't a long term first choice it's to offer cover irrespective, from what I read this could be a shrewd piece of business

The issue with the back four is more about the lack of pace wide and the two players in front of them.

JT hasn't.ost speed from last year nor has GC.

We are four games in and the manager will well know what needs doing

What sort of cover that Papy provides that couldn't be done by a reserve or a youth team player? From your statement, you are implying that Papy will be playing a good number of games due to him being speedier than Terry and Cahill. Do you actually believe that Mournho would even play this Papy fellow unless the entire defence was decimated by injuries and suspensions? I very much doubt Papy was a Mournho signing - it's the Board's choice.

felipe luis was good, but he wasn't very fast and he is nearly 30 y/o so wasn't for the long term. i think if we played luis this season with ivan on the right, we would have been conceding even more than we have been.

Correct me if i'm mistaken but Papy is a 'reserve'. As someone else (perhaps in other thread) mentioned our youth are perhaps better off playing week in week out at a level that will give them experience. There's little downside to this transfer imo, £2.7m is sweet f**k all to the club finances, and if he puts in a few decent performances his value is likely to increase (hence the 4 year contract).

I was thinking more like Luis & Azpi outside.

While Papy seems pacy and quite good in the tackle, some comments I have read have suggested that he gets caught upfield a bit. I'm sure Jose will have a very specific defined role for him.

WAGNH have written a fairly good article for the vast majority of Chelsea fans (including myself) who are wondering 'who the f**k is Djilobodji?':

http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2015/9/2/9243897/playing-catch-up-with-the-chelsea-scouting-team-who-is-papy-djilobodji

The summary:

1) He seems to have song written in his honour:

2) His name means 'pussy' in Korean (not in the feline sense)

3) He fancies himself as a defensive midfielder

4) Football News France described him as:

...one of the best Ligue 1 central defenders in 2014 ... [able to] quickly weigh-up the risk and reward each time he either makes an interception or chooses to merely track his man...

In 2014, Djilobodji has proved that he has become a far less reckless defender, most likely due to the increased experience that he has accumulated over the course of Nantes' ascension to Ligue 1 fame. [...] While Nantes are a seemingly ever-improving outfit, their midfield is oftentimes overrun and thus Djilobodji has to pick up the odd tactical yellow card here and there, with five cautions already in the first half of the 2014/15 campaign...

(and in the previous year)

...wonderful consistency ... no stranger to the tackle ... particularly strong in the air ... physically imposing and one of the improvements that he has made in the last eighteen months is using this physicality more wisely ... the Djilobodji of 2013 is a much changed defender.

5) Yaya Touré thinks he is the most two-footed defender he's ever seen (and bear in mind he has a lot of experience of playing against John Terry):

"I have seldom seen a defender with this good a left foot and right foot."

6) French Football Weekly described him as:

...he has developed a sound reputation for himself in France ... at such a low fee, [Chelsea] could possibly have grabbed themselves a deadline day bargain.

... uncompromising and forceful centre-back, who rarely comes out second best in aerial duels ... dominates the box with his physical stature.

...deceptively quick for his size, and though he is not blessed with blistering natural pace, he has a natural sense of positional awareness which allows him to be in the right place at the right time to intercept and to clear the danger, a feat which he has become especially renowned for.

...need to improve [on] lack of composure when in possession and his sometimes sloppy use of the ball from feet. His decision-making is by and large sensible; however at times he lacks the technical ability to pick out passes, and his poor distribution from feet has held him back from being a top defender at one of the bigger Ligue 1 clubs.

Suggest you read my post again I didn't say anything about him being faster that Terry or Cahill.

Will he ever play? That's what the manger is paid for to make such calls but as to wether he was the managers signing or not you have absolutely no idea so rather than trying to wind yourself and others up I would suggest it's far better to work on the basis that JM was fully involved and gave the red light

I personally believ that they were thinking that JT, GC& KZ and then BI were more than adequete cover at CD and on that basis were comfortable with players like Kalas and Christensen going out on loan the aim being to have them tested over a whole season at a reasonably high level but, the alarming drop in form from BI could well have been a major issue if that continues and on that basis they have thrown a reasonably small fee at this player who probably won't be a starter but he is experienced enough to probably hit the ground running.

On top of that I would suggest that in 12 months time he will either be a total revelation, sold on or be a handy add on to a still on going transfer saga.

Thank you for making me feel better about this signing, although it leaves me to wonder whether it's Papy or Djilobidji that is Korean :-)

So hes not in the CL squad

The added requirements with regard to HG and home trained always complicates matters. On the basis it's only for 6 games I guess it was always between him and one of the recently arrived youngsters and on the basis that the club will know more about them at. This time easy to understand thedecision

According to the very small amount of research I just put in, the word ? ("djil") means 'pussy' in Korean.

Ironically the word ??("pum djil") means 'quality'.

If anyone speaks Korean I would love to have this clarified.

I lived in Korea 4 years. Im conversational and I know a f*ck ton of curses. Ive never heard it referred to as ?. I learned to use ?? for pussy though there are different meanings for the same word and different words with the sane meaning.

Just looked it up, ? (jil) is used for vagina.

Makes sense I suppose, I mean how many slang words for 'vagina' are there in English? (I would love to see an attempt to list them all)

Yeah, ? (djil) is the same thing I got from Google Translate.
