Didn't know of Clive O'Connell before this news but by all accounts he was an opinionated Chelsea fan who was also a senior member of an international law firm.

 

As the story will explain in greater detail, he was filmed in a fans channel style video labelling Liverpool fans "scouse scum" after our recent defeat. What the article doesn't mention is that his law firm, Goldberg Segalla, were notified of his actions by Liverpool fans on social media (and no doubt by other means) which, amazingly, made them feel they had no choice but to sack him. 

 

A sad day for freedom of speech and, in contrast, a winning day for the ever growing lynch mob who are "outraged" by  anything and everything including, in this case, the mildest of derogatory terms associated with tribal football fandom. It is also of no coincidence that, despite O'Connell seemingly being as opinionated & passionate in his views against all opposition teams, it was the Liverpool fans reaction that ultimately lead to his dismissal. The Liverpool fan "victim" stereotype being reinforced there perhaps. 

 

Another depressing sign of the ever growing grass culture that we currently live in that seems to have blown up with the rising of social media.

Someone in a well regarded position within a good company should know better. You would expect action to be taken against a Chelsea player or staff member if they started shouting Scouse scum.

 

Saying that, '[insert club name here] scum' is prevalent over every terrace, forum and social media outlet every single day. It was nothing remarkable, and if he were to take them to an employment tribunal which he should, then he'd have a decent case. This sets a dangerous precedent.

I think he should have known better.... or certainly known his employers better, but using the term "scouse scum" is about as soft as a football insult can get in my opinion.

I read the statement but underneath all the guff of the not representing the company image blagh, blagh, blagh is it really grounds enough to skip verbal/written warnings about future conduct and maybe being placed on probation or whatever and just skipping straight to termination of employment. 

 

I mean, can they actually do that? Being a law firm I suppose they know better than most but isn't it all a bit extreme? 

Kind of hard to take your heart felt stance seriously when you have to keep reading off the script.

 

That being said, if its a criminal law firm, they probably get a lot of business from those scouse scum.

 

Seriously though, you never know which major client(s) might be a huge LFC fan, and that I suspect would be the most likely cause for this dismissal.  That or they were just waiting for any excuse.

I actually LOL'ed when he said compassion "Mate, you just fired a bloke over the words 'scouse scum', so what again about compassion?"

at least he went out with a bang lol, riling up a large number of scousers is always a positive in my book. the c**ts probably sent letters to his employer whining about those "bad words" he called them.

This poor chap has been sacked simply for using correct grammar. After all isn't Scouse Scum a proper noun?

Apparently the company was being absolutely flooded with emails by outraged bindippers. From what I gather O'Connell has written blogs where he has gone further than calling them scouse scum, haven't seen them myself though.

 

I accept that they felt they had to let him go, but putting it in a Youtube video is absolutely shameful.

You would have to look no further than the "they're all f**king rent boys mate" guy who is a regular/host on their own fans channel if I am not mistaken.

 

I seem to remember that such video being received by Chelsea fans with nothing but amusement. There was no outrage that I can remember and no letters written to anyones employer.

 

Shame the scousers can't engage their world renowned sense of humour a bit more often really.

Seen this story over last few days and thought only reason this is news is cos it's a chelsea fan...any other gobsh*te ranting after a game would be ignored as it should be, unless serious racism etc...the hypocrisy of Liverpool fans has no limit it seems
