And now JT.

Truly is the end of an era.

The team no longer has the charisma and identity that made us so successful for such a long time.

Mikel is still here FC

While there is always a small chance this will get resolved inside a couple of months i think the crux of the matter is that JT wanted clarity a few months in advance as to where his future will be the next little while. Which is completely understandable ovbiously with a wife and kids. Would not be surprised if he is already talking to MLS-clubs and looking for houses etc. Definitly sounded like it was a closed case in his own interview to me at least.

The thing that is odd is that it's not as if he is blocking youth coming through. Zouma is playing regularly as Cahill isn't as good. We don't really have any up and coming youngsters that are on the verge of break through.

You could argue if that was the case then one of Cesc, Mikel or Matic should leave to make way for RLC.

It's a bizarre decision by the club and it feels like it's a political move by JT to pressurise them.

Im starting to come round to this way of thinking. At first i was appalled and there were stories doing the rounds of him not being told face to face etc (which i bought into) but it turns out negotiations are still on the table so im not sure what JT is playing at to be honest. He prob shouldnt have let it go to some journos yesterday to be honest. He is our most decorated player and that demands he is treated with total respect but its got to be a two way street.

We dont do things easy, thats for sure.

I agree, but he shouldn't have been put in a position where he felt he had to do that in the 1st place.

Another day, another Chelsea sh*tstorm.

I must be naive as I thought the club would be doing everything to keep JT as part of the Chelsea landscape.

Wasn't there talk of an extension earlier in the month? I wonder if it's possible if he carries on playing well the club can change their mind and have been using this to keep him on his toes so to speak, clutching at straws here aren't I?

This makes absolutely no sense at all, we have 2 young C/B with Zouma & Mizaga who better for these to learn from than the best defender in PL history!! We should have followed what ManU did with Giggs!!

This could be a cunning and quite frankly dastardly plan by JT & his agent to get him another year. I hope it works, bent over a barrel or not, we still need him.

In my mind, Terry has come out and made his comments because he expected a contract extension to be offered to him by now. There's no reason for the club to drag this out till the summer or to 'keep all options open’. That's just disrespectful.

What does Terry have to prove? He's still the best defender at the club and is a nailed on starter in big games. Never mind that he can play a key role in inspiring and passing on his experience to younger players.

Staggering incompetence by the Board to even contemplate getting rid of him when he looks capable of a couple more years of playing at a high level.

Frankly, I’m disgusted at the ignorant buffoons who currently run this club.

Don't think so. Some of the stuff quoted direct from Terry sounds pretty definitive.

He demanded a face to face to have it confirmed. Would be odd to go back on stuff like this.

Ive slept on this overnight and whilst i wont be happy IF he does leave as I think he still has something to offer theres something bugging me about this and I dont like the smell.

Who advised Terry to make those comments yesterday? The timing is self serving, hindering the club off and on the pitch.

Why now? Why would Terry think that NOW is the right time to announce it? We are just coming out of a period where the team was playing like sh*t and they need leaders to motivate them to play to their potential. JT is fundamental to this. Look at him gripping Hazard after the penalty. He is the last of our "Golden Generation" (*shudder*) he is still first choice and is still the Captain. He has decided that his needs at this moment come before the clubs, confidence is fragile we should have been revelling in a fantastic FA Cup win instead we are discussing bad news. In a season where good news has been hard to come by this is not welcome. What did he hope to achieve by this? All I can see is that the atmosphere at the Bridge will be as sour with the fans berating the ownership and ME is this what we need at the moment?

Yes the club may not have decided on his contract but what he has done by announcing it is put unnecesary pressure on the club. Justifyably maybe in some peoples eyes but this should have been kept behind closed doors. Everyone now knows we are losing a first choice central defender and although it was common knowledge last year that we wanted one, its now a necessity that we sign a proven top tier defender and everyone other club knows it... Kerching, we were already looking at overpaying for Marquinos or Stones, what now £50 million?

That being said I still think it a short sighted decision to allow JT to leave and everything should be done to enable him to stay and contribute to the first team. He is right up there as one of the best Chelsea Players ever and to allow him to leae the club when he still has 1-2 seasons left in him will be a travesty.

But if he doesn't pressure the club, they would just happily let him sail off to another club. He's trying to influence them while he still can influence.

Two possible reasons for all this.

  • The club has been lackadaisical on renewing his contract, but intend on offering him an extension once the new gaffer is sorted.
  • The new gaffer has been contacted, and he does'nt want JT, because he's bringing in his own captain.

"I am very surprised," Zouma told the London Evening Standard. "Now we have to see what John wants to do because I think he can play for another one or two years.

"This feels like when we lost Didier [Drogba] last summer. He [Terry] is a huge personality at Chelsea. When you lose these kind of players, you have to replace them but I don't know how John can be replaced. We have to think about it.

"For me he can play many more times. He is still at a top level. He has been playing very well since I arrived at Chelsea. He can continue for sure.

"His performances have been consistent. Since I have been at the club, I haven't seen him play badly. That's the truth. He was always helping everybody.

"He has been a massive support to me. When I started my first games last year he was always talking to me. He is a legend and a very good leader. I have learnt a lot from him. I don't know what to say, I am very surprised."

I wouldn't say it's over yet, remember Lamps didn't sign until the season ended, it was probably Jose who asked for it and if the new manager is even slightly competent he would realise that we need to keep JT.

Fingers crossed.

exactly- it is an attempt to use the support- who mostly are already unhappy with the club over jose / emenalo / whatever- to publicly apply pressure on the board to extend his deal.

my view is simple- he's easily good enough to play for us for another season at least and the only reason to not extend his deal would be if the next manager doesn't want it.

this whole affair is the kind of thing that makes me think he'd not be suited to being a manager. as you say, he should have got his people to brief the press.

“So what part of it did they object to: the captain, the leader, or the legend? At a time when there would appear to be no direction at Chelsea, no philosophy, no standard to rally around, how can the club dispense with the services of the one constant across two decades?

“Leaving aside that Terry remains, even now, the best defender at the club, exemplary against Arsenal, still the first pick in any match that Chelsea have to win, how can he be considered to have nothing to offer in the way of example, or inspiration?”

I bow to nobody when it comes to admiration of Martin Samuel’s writing, yet I sense he struggled when posing the first of these two questions, while the answer to his second would surely be that the club do, of course, believe JT has a lot to offer in the way of example and inspiration, but this is an entirely separate issue when the player concerned is first and foremost seeking to extend his ‘playing’ contract for another year, under a completely new manager coming in with new ideas and in all probability a completely new philosophy requiring abilities above and beyond those of a 35yr-old, however exemplary or inspirational he may be.

But back to the first question and specifically the word ‘object’ - there is nothing objectionable about having a captain, leader and legend like John and to suggest that the club objected in some way to him being any of these is a very un-Samuel-like summation. Indeed, faith in him has been shown by his being made captain at an early age and he has repaid that faith with a level of leadership that has earned him legendary status. What’s to object to? Well, as TBB put it, Old Father Time is cussed and his ravages on JT are beginning to tell, not so much the exact time of his departure, but certainly its imminence. And we all object to that, not just the club.

And of late, we the fans have also been Samuel-esque in our objections to the lack of direction and philosophy at the club, yet when the hierarchy address this issue, by means of managerial change, perhaps even philosophical change [who knows] we recoil in horror at the prospect. But sentimental as we all undoubtedly are over JT's departure, whenever it may be, I for one do not want to end up next season with the team rallying around our ageing standard bearer only to find him struggling on a Northern battlefield having the fun poked out of him by rival supporters eager to take revenge for previous Gerrard jibes in what would be all too familiar and uncomfortable circumstances. No, John deserves better and, even though he doesn’t realise it at the moment, he will get exactly that from us, a newly-informed fan base, for the rest of this campaign. Better this than being given a bit part in next season’s play because he can no longer take a major role.

And finally, to quote TBB once again ‘We should take the time now to enjoy and applaud the finest and most successful Chelsea youth product ever who has given us 18 years top draw service. Revel in the fact that in a few years time our grandchildren will ask " what was JT like " ......as we all get misty eyed and tell them he was Chelsea .........…’ I’d like to draw everyone’s attention to a comparison with Ron Harris, Chelsea’s only other lifelong-serving legend, who if memory serves was of a similar age when he left for pastures new back in 1980 - not to sunnier climes, but down the road to Brentford to become player-coach, notching up another 50-odd games in the process.

Tommy Doc once famously said of him ‘Chopper Harris invented football violence. It's when he retired that it spread to the terraces.’ and he has since stated that in the modern game of the new millennium he doubts he would have survived even the warm up, let alone a full ninety minutes. In stark contrast JT was [is] a defender who rarely resorted to the over-physical, having adapted to the demands of the game throughout the whole of his illustrious career. But the game moves on into another decade, from Chopper’s violent era, through to JT’s tempered time at the top, and now on to higher lines and all-court stronger pressing. It’s survival of the fittest, the fastest, the fledglings and the forward planners.

Their time has come… but true legends like John Terry will never be forgotten.

Whilst I think Emenalo is used as a scapegoat to an extent, does anyone know how he is in such a lofty position of power at the club with such limited experience? Marina I can understand having worked with Roman in business, but to me he just kind of appeared one day, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
