Assuming that JT leaves, who should be chosen to captain the squad next season?

Ivanovic? (if he stays) Fabregas? Diego?

Who?

No-one really stands out, but I'd say Fabregas if I had to choose one from the current squad. Though obviously I'd much rather JT stays for 1 more year.

Cesc and Azpi stick out to me but I'd go for Cesc as he has more experience and would potentially thrive under the extra responsibility.

The press would have a field day if it was Costa.

I'd go for fabregas but he's only been here for 2 seasons. (He has no emotional bonds with Chelsea)

Seems a few professional sports are leaning away from having a central figure as captain, implementing a range of things like leadership groups, attacking/defensive captains, weekly/seasonal captain.

Personally I don't like that approach, having a great captain can really lift a team like nothing else especially when there is emotion involved.  But perhaps other clubs and sports have moved away from this because of the increasing lack of emotional attachment players have to their club?  Perhaps, like sports science, they progressed and realised having many leaders is better than one?

I'm not so sure. I like rallying behind one figure, but maybe something different could be explored?

I love Dave but I don't think he's ready to be the captain.

Its difficult to say as none of the fanbase has any inkling behind the scenes. We all know how much JT does for the youth, but what about the rest of the squad? Fabregas could be a fantastic mentor and certainly looked like one with his interview with Hazard after the FA Cup game with City but for all I know Falcao could be working non-stop with the reserves. At the very least I'd like to see Terry have a say in his successor.

Azpi for me, though I agree with a previous post that Fab could thrive as captain, perhaps even encourage him to reach Pirlo's epic status (if he isn't already there yet).

Ivanovic is a true blue and one of our most senior players, he's vice captain so naturally should take over, but it would be subject to his playing time as captain should be a nailed on starter. VC minimum next season.

Fabregas certainly can do the job although he is more brash and fiery and I prefer a calm composed captain like JT, he was also the only player to turn up to the Youth FA Cup Final other than JT so perhaps being groomed for the role?

Cahill has a shot, been here for a few years, English and speaks well so he can do the job of interviews etc.

We all love Azpi but he's a puppy dog.

That's why he should be captain, he's just a lovable scamp!

Seriously though I don't think in today's game captaincy is that relevant - for me it just symbolizes status. Sorry to go all RAWK but we need eleven captains on the pitch.

It means more at Chelsea though, JT's made it so but yeah we need more captains on the pitch like when we had JT Drogba Lamps and Cech.

Btw Arsenal's captain is still Arteta what a joke lol.

Ivanovic will probably get it but if the club played loftus-cheek abit more this season he would of been a candiate. Wilkins was captain at a younger age.

Bring back Cech and make him captain

Fabregas as the captain is one of the funniest things i have heard. Honestly. I mean the guy to crumbles at the first sight of pressure, is a massive bottler, a proper mercenary, and is now wearing the armband. JT's successor will be Cesc Fiberglass??? Unbelievable.

Based on what? Would love to know what makes him a mercenary? Something tells me you've been reading the papers to much.

It will be ivan if terry leaves most likely.  And frankly, it probably should be.  Although he has played poorly on the right, a full offseason at CB and he could return to form.  We just need to bring in a left back so that we can move azpi to the right.

If it were up to me, and I got to choose captain based on performance and passion, I don't think anyone comes close to azpi.  Rarely makes mistakes and has been one of the better fullbacks in the pl for two seasons now.  Also leads by example with his workrate and enthusiasm.

Wouldn't have a problem with Fab, if he shows the passion that he showed against Tottenham, I looked at Zouma as our future captain, up until his injury, but that was when I was hopeful of JT staying. I thought Zouma to be captain one or two seasons down the line, I'd have no problem with him being vice captain, when he fully recovers. We're not sure if Ivan will stay or not, I love the man but it's 50/50, if he stays he needs shifting to centre back, then maybe he could be permanent captain, otherwise he's a liability at right back. Gary Cahill is an option, hasn't had a good season, but who has? I wouldn't mind, Azpi is too lightweight in my opinion, heard Costa being touted for captain by a former player earlier this season, he said it would give him extra responsibility, so he'd have to behave himself, it would be interesting, but I could see it backfiring.

Being in the camp that thinks Ivanovic shouldn't be starting at all for us next season, I'm inclined to go for Azpilicueta. Lahm is the best example of how a captain dosen't need to be blood and thunder but can lead by example instead.

John Obi....... :face_palm:  he's guaranteed a start then........................pretty much a bad bunch to be picking from TBH..the back 4 are sh*te Love Dave but he seems to quiet and Conte will have changes for sure, the defensive midfield pretty much sucks.  And apart from Cesc and Costa not much to choose from................Ivan I can't stand...sloppy defensively, not disciplined and hardly leads by example in his play
