Coefficient no longer applies to top European leagues...4 places guaranteed...clear move by UEFA to avoid breakaway super league

What makes a top European League though ? If English sides fail time and time again and their coefficient drops far enough, surely we would lose a spot.

I didn't see that result coming, just to prove you need at least decent defence to survive the CL knock up stage. It's obvious Pep under estimated the tasks in hand during the summer, no defensive reinforcement apart from the non-defending stone.

This should explain it....and even if English league is crap for years, I suspect UEFA will fix it that they keep four spots..

English football is pretty much safe forever under the new rules then. It kind of makes it all a bit pointless now though. There is no way France, Portugal or any other country is going to catch up to Spain, Germany, Italy or England now.

Exactly...big money clubs have put pressure on UEFA and they caved like the useless so and sos they are

I always said that City's defence would give the opposition a chance.

Not surprised that a free-scoring side like Monaco put six past them.

It is surprising how inflexible Pep can be at times.

EDIT: As for Leicester they continue to make history. Sevilla are a good side but Leicester played them off the park.

Isn't it fun seeing Pep continuously falter at City this season?

Media w**k fest thought he was going to take the English league by storm and right now he's being outperformed in Europe by a caretaker manager at a relegation threatened side and losing out in the league to side that finished last year in tenth.

Makes me smile anyway.

thanks - I remember discussion about this now. what really p*sses me off is the idea that historical success should contribute to a club's coefficient - that'll award Liverpool extra points even though they've done nothing in Europe for 12 years and counting - it's so unfair to up and coming clubs

I like to look around opposition forums to get a look at how other fans view us, Bluemoon is definitely the highlight for me. Always treated to how much it hurts them that we're so far ahead considering when "they're just so much better" and they'd only be 2 points behind "if it weren't for corruption." Let me tell you, there's a lot to be said for Conte's "boring" football as opposed to Pep's style, because the latter has thrown away a two goal advantage and is now out of the champions league. Bellends

No league title, No CL, Choke like we are Arsenal, Pep's breaking records as usual that's for damn sure only this time in the L category. On a night like this i wish i was a City fan from China or India, How do i show my face at work tomorrow after this? Go hard on us tonight guys and gals.

Obviously we benefit from it...but I hate the whole 'keeping it a closed shop' mantra...

Amount of Goals scored doesn't explain/reveal everything, but fact we have scored four more than City in the league this season should counter any argument we play 'boring' football

I think Pep will have some success at City, they're spending too much money not to but it remains to be seen if his spell will be successful.

Their transfer strategy this summer was bizarre. Buying Sane, Notillo, Jesus in addition to already having Navas, Sterling, Silva, De Bruyne and yet neglected to buy quality and experience in defence instead throwing £50m at a very raw John Stones.

We're coming to the closing stages of the season and he still doesn't have a settled partnership in midfield and has started about 7 different players there compared to us using three.

only Chelsea can save the nation; can't wait to see us in the CL next season, it's going to be fab

Our next target should be to allow Antonio to build a squad big enough to challenge for the CL and top 3 next season.

There's already some pundits/journos/city fans etc making excuses for him tonight...didn't take a genius to figure out that city's spending last summer should have been on the back four, but he bought just one and he's not a proper defender anyway...plus he bombed out joe hart for a keeper that can supposedly pass the ball, forgetting that a keepers main job is to stop the ball going in the net..

pep could still come back to bite chelsea in the arse in the League and fa cup...but he's not lived up to the hype

bro don't feel bad - Monaco have a way of knocking English teams out of the UCL - as CFC fans we know this all too well - guess who knocked us out in 2003/04 after Chelsea defeated the so-called Invincibles - it's part of the learning curve sorry to say, but your side are one of the Best Teams money can buy - take a look at that & feel good for yourself - also grab another pint - that might help you feel a bit better

I am sorry but do you think Chinese and Indians fans dont have that problem?

When we came 10th last season, we did not get any leg pulling from fellow rival club's fans? What a ridiculous statement.

A city fan's wishlist off bluemoon:

Huge summer too, if we want to get to the latter stages of this competition next year. At worst we need:

- minimum of 1 goalkeeper. (Willy is getting old and bravo isnt even a number 2): £20m
- 3 fullbacks. £20m each average: £60m
- minimum of 1, likely 2 centre backs (Vinny injury prone and a reliable partner for Stones): £80-90m
- 2 central midfielders (Silva getting older, ditto yaya): £80-100m
- 2 strikers of Jesus/Aguero class: 2x£40/50m = £80-100m

Total spend of circa £320-370m

Brilliant!!!

I'd wouldn't say they played them off the park, indeed the opposite occurred in the first leg. Sevilla had the misfortune of running into a resurgent team but Leicester were never in the ascendancy in terms of the actual play.

I really hope we have our eyes firmly set on a few of those Monaco players for the transfer window. Mendy, Fabinho, Bakayoko, Mbappe and Silva all look amazing.
Mendy would be a huge upgrade on Alonso.

I meant in the second leg, sorry.

The first leg arguably flattered Leicester, agreed.
