Wing backs who would be an upgrade or backup?

Featured Replies

Pre January Alonso was first port of call when it came to upgrading on, while i appreciated his qualities allowed us to switch to the system that saved our season, i still felt he was the weak link during the winning run and he got run ragged vs Saints and City especially. But since then he's come on leaps and bounds, his defending has improved and he is a big threat in attack. Having said that we need to sign competition for him, as wingback will be the one position

As for Moses, the perfect scenario would be to sign an upgrade but Victor remains part of the squad.

Are you talking about Real Madrid's Danilo or is that a joke?

Why would it be a joke? Danilo is a top notch player and the only reason he isn't playing is because Carvajal is the best right back in La Liga. He's had a sh*t time at Madrid, yes, but at Porto he was fantastic

No, that's not the only reason he isn't playing mate. He's a sh*t player. Every time he has played at Madrid, he has been sh*t, giving away goals, losing concentration, etc. Don't believe me, ask any Madrid fan. Danilo is NOT someone we should be looking at to start for us.

Bearing in mind I haven't seen much of him at Madrid, but I remember him being good at Porto. Unlikely we'll go for him in that case.

Can't realistically see us signing him tbh, I still think he's a good shout I'm just not convinced the club will want to pay 20m+ for a player who will likely be rotated with Moses. If he moves somewhere I think he'll want to be first choice.

He'd be starting more often if he was any good at the top level. I remember a period last season or so when Carvajal was out and Danilo played for an extended period. Madrid got slaughtered in that wing in the CL and in the league.

There's a definite shortage of good attacking wingbacks available, I wonder will we go for another under the radar type signing like Alonso for the RWB position

There could be a gem to uncover from the Portuguese league in that respect. Juve's Alex Sandro was a Porto player after all. Having said that, I know next to nothing about that league these days so I could be wrong.

Deadly serious. Thing he would be a decent back up to moses. He would get plenty of help here defensively, both on the pitch, and on the training ground. Won't cost too much either.

We shouldn't be trying to sign a wing back who needs plenty of help defensively. That doesn't make our team better in any way.

The quickest way to go backwards as a club is to sign back-ups for non-standout players.

Like its fine to sign a backup to Costa, Courtois.

Start signing backups to the likes of Moses (who I love) and you'll soon end up with a squad like Arsenal full of 7-8 average players like Gabriel, Monreal, Debuchy, Elneny, Lucas Perez etc all signed in the not too distant past and absolutely nothing added to the squad but dead weight.

That's a fair point. Although I don't think that there are many outstanding candidates that will be a massive upgrade on moses. I also don't think danilo would be the big disaster you think. He isn't great defensively at right back, but he wouldn't even be playing there for us. Like moses, he would benefit from having azpiliucueta and kante around him. Plus he's young and I think he conte could improve that side of his game. He wouldn't be my first choice, but I dont think it would be a bad choice.

will be interesting to see if Conte sticks with Moses and Alonso as his first choice wing backs with the Champo League to come...

Reckon he will look at Baba and some of the youngsters but more realistically I reckon he will go for new purchases.

would love to see players like Alaba, Walker, Sidibe, Mendy etc but they will cost an arm and a leg plus the first two are unlikely to join due to  success at current club/Spurs player respectively.

more realistically   Id like Hendrichs and Jonas Hector but would both probs cost a fair bit too... but young and talented and from Koln who we might be able to convince with a decent fee.

Lichtsteiner would be a great choice for RWB and has won everything at Juve and is stuck behind Alves but could still do a job and is very solid defensively..

for LWB id like to see Tiernery or Bertrand but wouldn't mind Cresswell either from West Ham depending on the fee.. both talented and Cresswell would help English wise plus proven in Prem.. so would Bertrand and I reckon he would jump at the opportunity to prove himself at his old club.

Just see who Atletico or Monaco are after and sign them.

I have heard this sentence so many times and I find it so wrong.

With all the money that we or united or city or RM or Barca have, you would think we would have the best scouts too. And I believe we do. The only difference between the mentioned clubs and clubs like Porto, ATM, Soton, monaco, who year after year can develop young talents is that, they not only have good scouts but also trust these youngsters to fulfil their potential.

On the other hand, we have talents like Andreas yet want to buy VVD for a quick fix. That is the sole difference between the likes of Monaco/ATM and us.

Please dont get me wrong, I am not saying that we should put in a U23 team but atleast show some faith in the loanees who have been successful and who a lot of us can see are real world class talents.

I dont think we need a RWB i think Moses is fine and Ola Aina is perfect for a wingback and is fine for backup, i do not want Azpi playing right or left wingback next season. Same with Ake they are not suited to that position for me, both are CB or fullbacks only. LWB over Alonso is the position to be strengthend because Baba is only coming back from a a bad injury and I'm still not 100% on Alonso, i feel we can get better.
