Excellent. Along with Sandro he was the best LB in Italy last season.

Finally a transfer that excites me. Didn't play for Rome in Europe this campaign either so he'll be available against Barcelona if he signs.

 

i was desperate to see a lwb signing in the summer, but it didn't happen. now it's happening (i hope, touch wood) i am so relieved. alonso really needs back up and someone who can rotate with him so he can rest. i felt lwb was the most important area that needed strengthening.

He's Brazilian so has had Marcelo, Alex Sandro, and felipe Luiz to compete with. He only opted to play for Italy at the back end of last season and he tore his acl shortly afterwards.

He just switched to Italy in March and has been injured since then, so not very worrying actually.  If he stayed with Brazil he obviously wasn’t getting into that team, they’re stacked at LB.

Fair enough then.  Hopefully he's  as good as they say he is.

Lets hope he brings something exciting with him....no doubt it will be a few weeks before we see him on the bench let alone get a start.  I guess we'll see. I wish him the best.

I thought Baba was naive defensively (he was young so not too many surprises there) but had the attributes to be Alonso's backup. Let's not forget he was keeping Kolasinac out of the Schalke team before his injury. 

Personally i agree wjth chelseayouth's point on Twitter. We have bought a left back every year since Cole left. That speaks to a lack of planning and short term fixes to appease particular managers. How we let Bertrand leave for Luis and then let him go too is quite silly. 

Our investment in role playing left backs could have easily paid for Sandro with Bertrand or DaSilva as rotation.

Interesting point above in regards to Ashley Cole. Since he left we've had:

Bertrand: Free

F. Luis - £18m

Kennedy (?) - £7.2m

Baba - £18m

Emerson - £23m (?)

Total - £66.2m spent on LB's trying to replace Ashley. 

Granted we made some money back on selling Bertrand (£10m) and Luis (£14m) it is still a crazy amount of money to be spending on replacing one player. Instead of trying to find a deal could we not have not spent big on a ready made player, or better yet, use what we already had in Luis/Bertrand.

So which Manchester club do we think Alex Sandro will go to then? I think Utd will go for him.

We could still sign him, just not until we've had a look at Emerson, or if Marcos Alonso is tempted by Real Madrid/Barcelona.

66 seems a bargain in this climate. And it is not simple or even possible in some extent to replace someone like Ash.

The Luis one was the weird one as he simply didn't give him a good enough go.  I think he would have been class for us had we given him an extended run in the team, it's just that Dave was playing at left back and he was a beast there.

The thing that baffled my most about the whole situation was we played Dave left back and Ivanovic right back (when he'd completely lost it) when we had Luis on the bench.  Then sold him and not Ivanovic.  If we had kept Luis we would have been sorted at left back.

Forgot Alonso as someone else mentioned. Make that closer to £90m then. Most of these transfers were also done at a time when £18m was a hell of a lot of money for a full back still.

I agree we've wasted money in the left back position, but baba had lost his starting place before he got injured. Out of the numerous left we've bought since ash left, he is worse.
