Keep him for another season or two if he played in 90% of matches extend, if he’s involvement is below 50% due to injuries he has to leave I think.

This leaves a sizeable chunk between 51% and 89% where nothing happens...

He's under contract for another 4 years. I don't think extending is a conversation for a while.

I know and I don’t have a solution for that period to be honest. If I was in charge the 51% to 89% range would be the” if the offer is good as in £70 million + add on you consider it.

As anyone buying would take into account his injury record and if he’s between 51% and 89% we would show he’s over it but we all he’s just one match away from 3 months out.

It would be just to make sure we don’t get low balled nothing more than a extra year maybe to seal a decent fee

On what planet? Two season ago is when we might have gotten that fee. Next summer even if he stays fit no one will pay over £50m on those wages. He spends most of the season on the sidelines and any team taking a chance on him will be at the £35m mark.
That aside I don’t even think there is a market for him anymore. Big clubs aren’t spending record fees on players anymore, the game now is to register your interest a season or two before they become free agents. You sign them on a free, with big sign on fees and fat wages. Madrid have done that with Rudiger and Mbappe, they are going to repeat the trick next summer with Trent Alexander and Alphonso Davies

If James could manage a season injury free he'd definitely be getting £80m bids from Madrid. By far the most complete full back in world football, genuine generational talent on the level of Bellingham and Loftus-Cheek when fit.

You are probably correct but I am being optimistic.
I would rather us be here 4 years from now glowing how dominant he has been and winning us the PL and CL again and getting nominated and winning awards but I fear his body isn't up to to.
I think if he played mid 2000s when we had far less games he would have been ever present.

This Reece James thread should be sent to anyone calling Chelsea out for resting Cole Palmer form the European games. for years weve seen talented young players driven into the ground, and many people saying clubs need to protect them from being overplayed.

Reece, CHO, Mount and many more all played huge amounts of games, within a few season injuries and fatigue have seen them all drop away.

It is strange how there are still some fans who are convinced we have too many players and that we will struggle to fit them to play.

For all the criticism Clearlake has been given, they've been one step ahead of the other clubs. There is so much football this season alone. Our season doesn't even end in May. We have the Club World Cup immediately after.

Just comes down to the manager having the balls to adequately rotate going forward.

It's one thing being able to convince Palmer to accept rotation when we are going into the depths of Asia, it's another when it comes to league games.

Agree with the premise of your post but it's not factually correct to say Reece has played a huge amount of games. The most 90 minute games he has ever played for Chelsea in EPL is 25 games in 20/21 season. If we want to dial in further, not taking into account sub appearances he has only played over half a league season of games(19) since he's played for us twice. The figures are damning on his ability to stay fit and injury free, the more you take a granular look on his seasonal minutes and appearances in all competitions and England duty.

I know as I have looked into this before but don't have the time to just now.

How many times was he rushed back into the team because we needed him? A young player, desperately in need of time to recover from injuries and we constantly threw him back in.

at least we seem to be taking the right precautions with Lavia early in his career.

And so we should, theres a duty of care for players, more so for the young uns, which seems to go out the window as soon as a manager is under pressure. Fans dont help sometimes, this weird thing about "well they get paid loads" that some think means they should break their bodies for them, or fatigue shouldnt effect them.

You see this in the way concussion was treat until very recently, bit of water, back into the game you go. Were so far behind other sports with this stuff.

I don’t pretend to know anything about sports science - but I find it hard to believe that as a club we are routinely risking players, by asking them to play when not fully fit.

It feels like quite the opposite - any little niggle is an excuse not to play.

In Reece’s case, he seems to have weak/dodgy hamstrings that are prone to injury. Him suffering a reoccurring injury is likely nothing to do with his overall fitness and being rushed back - but more likely his genetics and biology. The surgeon himself said Reece has “extra big hamstrings” which causes issues.

This has played out, with his hammy consistently being an issue….an extra week or 2 of match fitness is not going to  help with that.

Problem with Reece is that he hasn't really been rushed back at all. Except once by Potter back in 2022 but last season he had a really slow build up from May, through pre-season and still pulled his hamstring in gameweek 1. Then he had another two months recover and his minutes was very much managed from October - December when he went down again.
Then he was given six months to recover and was given a couple of minutes in the last two games of the season before he had another slow build-up through pre-season only to go down again without a single minute on the pitch in a competitive match.

Highest earner and contributing very, very little although its not his fault. I think even Reece knows whats coming soon. Bar a miraculous turnaround he's going to be given the Chalobah treatment next summer.

He was actually lucky there was never a need to rush him back. Azpi who started RB before moving to LB  for a while, in his last few seasons covered RB again.

We had rotational options there and I remember players like Chalobah, Christensen and maybe some others covered it at different times. I may be a bit fuzzy with the details but I don't remember him needing to be ever rushed back.

I think he is referring to his sister being one of the best women’s footballer one the planet and playing for our team.

What would that have to do with the captain and face of the men's team though?

Didn’t we sign the lesser Hazards and Musondas for similar reasons?
