He can't change anything with a £100m white elephant up front.

He was lean before he came to us wasn't he?

How many white players are so often over weight and have all the grace of a reversing dump truck when on the pitch? All other 'large' strikers we had (Drogba, Giroud) all kept themselves in elite shape.

Edit: at least your profile picture describes you well.

Not yours coco, I know what a white elephant means.

What I'm saying is that likening a black person to an animal, particularly one associated with Africa, is racist. You see it on twitter, in the wider world, and on here too, unfortunately.

I won't resile from that view, and suggest others consider not being racist.

A white elephant is a possession that its owner cannot dispose of, and whose cost, particularly that of maintenance, is out of proportion to its usefulness.

Sometimes picking an agenda for the sake of it makes you look stupid. The comment I’m sure was made with zero racial undertones, just like its origins in Thailand.

I agree, thanks for pointing it out.

Nothing like playing a good reverse racism card.

What's a 'reverse racism card'?

We do compare players to animals, but we shouldn't do it for a physical comparison, for instance we call Courtois snake for his sly nature not because he's long and skinny and poisonous.

I don't really understand how the words 'reverse' or 'card' it into that as a term.

What I would say to your point here is that yes, intent is a consideration, but impact is also important.

If someone likens a black person to an elephant, that is very likely to be racist even if they don't understand or consciously intend this.

It comes from the dehumanisation of black people associated with slavery, and with seeing them as 'less than' white people.

It doesn't have any place here.

On lukaku. It does look like we're stuck with him. On the plus side he's well capable of being a decisive title winning player. On the down side, it is hard to see how that happens given how the season has gone, his relationship with tuchel, and the way we play. He is responsible above anyone else in finding a way to change this.

Is he? He's 29 and his only major title has come under a manager who's made all sorts of average players Champion. At best he's going to add a league cup to that before his 30th.

In a pre Klopp and Guardiola league maybe, maybe he could have flat-track bullied us to one but we will likely need to have superior record over both of those to even challenge in the foreseeable and can you see Lukaku making vital contributions/goals against those teams to aid it?

For Lukaku to be instrumental 'in a title winning side', he'd have to go back to Italy.

This won't happen in the Prem so long as Liverpool and City have Klopp and Pep, and more and more clubs adopting a pressing game.

The consensus in pre-season was that if we had those chances we created the season before that he would be assured of plenty of goals. I and others never believed that for one minute because of the way we won the CL just weeks before we bought him, by having mobile players in attack, the club and Tuchel gambled with Lukaku being able to beat opponents one-on-one with his strength, but that is not happening, look how he is marshalled out of the game these days, he does not look like a strong player, compare him to a similar build in Rudiger who dominates his opponents.

Yeah I think he's capable of being that important and making a huge contribution over the course of a season.

Obviously getting ahead of both City and Liverpool is a massive, massive ask, but were it not for the fact he's lost the trust of his manager (and that there is very little chemistry between him and his teammates), I wouldn't look at out squad and pick him out as a player that needs improving upon / replacing.

I think the Liverpool / City thing needs to be put I some historical perspective too. We could have a great side, coached by our fantastic manager, and still finish third next season.

Realistically, we're losing some hugely important players concentrated in one or two positions, how we move forward with lukaku is unclear, and we have no idea how much money there will be to address these challenges (but we an safely assume less). It will be almost impossible to win the league from next season, a really good summer window could only go some way to addressing the issues with the squad with a view to a stronger challenge the season after next I reckon.

Love how Lukaku defenders continue to gloss over the notion that Lukaku has bad chemistry with other players. Have you ever wondered why Havertz has better chemistry with Werner and Mount and Lukaku doesn't?

Lewandowski could be available for cheap given his decision not to sign a new contract

If there's any club out there willing to pay decent money for Lukaku (70m+) I'd say we should offload him

Well based on your thinking Lukaku doesn't need to be improved on, I would say you think Lukaku isn't the issue and that everyone else is.

Would you be happier if he was called a useless donkey instead?

No, that isn't it. If we can cut our losses on him this season we should jump at the chance.

Couple of scenarios:

Lukaku actually is a good player. If he hadn't done that interview while injured he'd not been isolated from the team. Sometimes I feel players just didn't pass to him to make him pay. Probably a load of bollocks but these last games players actually pass the ball to him. He has looked more bright in these couple of games.

Lukaku is making himself seen and heard once more to raise interest. He wants to leave. He hates being in London and feels under appreciated.

There is no backstory. Lukaku is a good player. Never 97m player but a good one for Italian league. Stories we hear are true. Hard to adapt, low on morale. Premier League is above his talent level to be a decisive player. He is not a very strong person. TT's system isn't exactly what he needs. He is probably craving the Life in Italy but he realizes he is here now....

I disagree. He had/has both Hazard's and De Bruyne feeding him in the national team and still disappears when it truly matters.

He simply doesn't have the game intelligence to make consistent contributions against top tier teams, it's been proven for the best part of a decade now.

I was listening to a podcast where someone said something that was well and truly nail on the head.

Lukaku not doing enough for the team is one thing, but when he's not doing enough for even himself, makes it entirely unacceptable.
