Romelu Lukaku back to Chelsea - and gone again!

Recommended Posts

Ex Chelsea, PL experienced with 113 goals in four clubs and one of the best strikers in Europe so far.

Had one of the best seasons in Inter, and now when Conte is about to leave, Inter are looking to sell their most valuable players and we're linked with Lukaku.

If his leaving will be official, I guess our chances getting Lukaku will be higher.

Question is do we really need Lukaku? We do need a striker, but is Lukaku going to be the answer?

My opinion is positive about him, he's 28 and we might get him for 5-6 years, he knows how to score goals and that's what we need. An aggressive striker, who has speed in counter attacks. Together with Werner things can work out. We will have a deadly duo in our attack and will get us more options to use different formations. His days in Chelsea weren't very successful, he had good season in West Brom and Everton, he was decent in Man United as well ( back in that team it was hard to success as a player to be honest ). There's Euro incoming and he's already the top scorer of Belgium.

• Back-to-back 30 goal seasons.
• Most goal contributions in Serie A this season (34)
• 11 goal contributions against the Serie A top seven.

Pretty good stats. Probably the best that we can realistically get. Kane or Haaland aren’t coming. Inter need to sell. Seems to make sense all round.

Real Madrid seems very likely given tonight's news. I'll take the Spurs job, sign Nibs, Goose,  Just and Jorginho and take my £9m pay off in December.

Not showing a whole lot of faith in us Loz. Reckon we’d strengthen that lot.

Conte have left already now.

Think it's extremely likely he'll come here this summer now,

Conte has got to be the most mercenary manager ever. As soon as he knows that there's no money for a transfer kitty, he leaves.

Cos he knows that if he is forced to sell Lukaku, or Martinez, all that hard work will be harder to achieve, he leaves with inter bowing to his majesty..

A surprisingly high proportion of his (open play) goals here are him receiving the ball somewhere around the penalty spot with no defender anywhere near him.

On the one hand - Werner on Chelsea form would miss … etc

On the other - there might be some truth to all the comments about Seria A not being a good barometer.

I really wanted to see him “bully defenders” as someone put it. He seems to have bullied them so effectively that they prefer to stay the f**k away from him. 🙂

If Lukaku is the best we can get also think we should really get Ings too, even though he is injury prone.

Lukaku is not good at unpicking defenses, more scoring when he is in space and holding off a defender.

Ings is a class finisher and reads the game well.

I have a Brentford supporting client who is astonished that the Premier League Clubs have not shown more interest in Ivan Toney. he is convinced he is a 20+ goal a season striker at any level. I guess that Clubs are waiting to see if Brentford get promoted via the play offs. I don't think that we can take (another) risk. If we are selling Tammy and Giroud, we have to be certain of goals from whoever we do sign. I would still prefer we go all out for Kane, but currently think that Lukaku is the best that we can realistically sign.

He is 25, with 1 good season a Championship level. We are in the champions league final. Im not saying he couldnt do it for us, but we arent in a position where we would need to make that sirt of gamble. Maupay and Watkins both hit 25 league goals for Brentford in the season before they came up, and whilst both are decent players, I wouldnt want either at Chelsea.

Are we really going to throw £80m on a guy because he's the best available at this moment in time?  Screams Morata all over again to me.  Same as the CHO to Dortmund rumours allowing Sancho to go to Utd, again screams of the Bats to BVB allowing Aubameyang to Arsenal nonsense.  Do we ever learn or are we destined to make the same mistakes over and over again.  Next we'll be linked with an overrated central midfielder from Ligue 1 who can't control his feet.  Or maybe Lukaku is the new Bakayoko, or was Lukaku the old Bakayoko?

Back to Juventus? Real Madrid? PSG?

He's not going to be short on offers that's for sure.

Zero chance of any of those clubs happening, you can knock all those clubs off your lists. Burnt his bridges at Juve, Neymar & Mbappe will veto that move and  you are having a laugh if you think Florentine Perez will appoint Conte.

I would be happy with Lukakau, if the price is around 50m-60m and with wages that don't exceed our highest earners. He is fast and can bully most defenders out there. His linkup play seems to have improved, with more assists and chances created then ever before. The downside with Lukaku is that he tends to be a bit lazy in his defensive work, we might not be as succsessful in pressuring teams high up the pitch, if one of our attackers is not moving with the rest of the team.

When we signed Morata he didn't have a good goal scoring record and had never established himself as first choice at any club he'd been at.

We overpaid and gambled on Morata.

Lukaku has a proven track record of scoring goals, isn't past his peak and is currently in the best form of his career.

He's the 7th top goal scorer (24) in Europe's top leagues behind Lewandowki (41), Messi (30), Ronaldo (29), Andre Silva (28), Haaland (27), Mbappe (26).

The players with more goals than him are either the wrong side of 30 or will cost twice as much (if not more) than the rumoured free for Lukaku. Except Andre Silva who doesn't have as proven a track record (bombed pretty badly at Milan) for goal scoring and it's yet to be seen if this was an outlier for him or signs of what's to come.

So if not Lukaku, then who? Because there's not many players with a record like his available.
