Romelu Lukaku back to Chelsea - and gone again!

I know a lot of people want him gone but I personally doubt he is leaving. No one is going to take him off so fans have to accept the fact that he is probably going to be here next season. Might have another striker to compete with him but he will still be in blue.

Having said that, I still think we can still get the best out of him and up the 15 goals we got from him this season to a 25 if we switch from our laboured passing approach in the final third to a more direct style. That would mean getting rid of people like Ziyech and Pulisic for forwards that would be more willing to carry the ball and run at defenders. Chillwell coming back will also help.

He should be getting the best out of himself.

He thinks he's on the level of Benzema/Lewa, time he puts his money where his mouth is.

I don't doubt that he can do better in terms of goal return.

The issue is that we are not going to change our style in a significant enough way to suit his counter attack preference.

The guy has no touch, limited spacial awareness, no closing down, can't dribble and struggles to pass. He also has a very poor work rate. There is no reason we should build a team around such a limited player, and certainly not one who runs his mouth in the media.

But I recall a couple of nice passes that he made that a teammate farked up a sitter.  One by Mason that was an unbelievable miss.

How many has he took away from Mount? I remember 2 vs Spurs alone.

That said I do agree with the general point that the assist stat is misleading (it needs serious redefining) key passes/chances created are a much better barometer of how creative a player is.

He should be getting himself medication or at the very least a good psychiatrist.

He's never had the potential to get close to Benzema/Lewa level.

Lukaku isn't world class, has never been world class and has never had the potential to be world class.

The talent and technical ability just isn't there and at this point I'm really not sure why some people (Primarily Lukaku himself and a few scouts) can't see it given it's been obvious since he was 18.

I don't disagree with any of that atall but that's the standard he sets himself by not only his talk but how he wants/gives himself the similar type of excemptions Hazard got (that's before even mentioning his price tag).

If he was humble and put the hard yards in I'd have cut him some slack for his performances but he's done it to himself. He (and those who defend him) seem to want to have their cake and eat it.

I agree and I'd love that to be the case but the reality is that there is no easy way to get rid of a 100million pound striker. We're going to either have to build the team to his strengths or waste more money.

I’d rather waste 100m than build team around that.

I am not sure building around Lukaku is the right way.

However Lukaku will benefit if we play faster and I personally feel this 3 atb, sideway pass, sleeping football that we have been playing is too boring for my liking.

I personally don't find it boring, was some of the most exciting football i've seen before the Chilwell injury. That Juventus game was a delight to watch.

I would prefer to just build a building round Lukaku, maybe an outside toilet.

I didn't find it boring either, but we stopped playing that way pretty much straight after that game. We peaked and it was all down hill from there. We were playing with pace, the ball was being moved from midfield to the wings quickly and we had James, Chilwell and even Alonso running in behind defences and Kovacic playing defence splitting passes. Even Jorginho was playing at a higher tempo and looking forward instead of recycling possession. We had a set back with the injury to Chilwell and draw against United and then we suddenly just stopped playing and never recovered.

If you look at the highlights from that game against Juve and any of the performances in the past 5 months, its like watching games from 2 different seasons.

I feel fatigue also played a major part in this. We were literally playing every 3 days with no respite amid Covid and injuries. Mentally it takes a toll as well to be continuously 'on". Hopefully with better backup and 5 substitutions, it will be a little better next year.

James Robson claiming this clown and his reps are going to speak with Boehly soon. Lukaku is "Determined to make it work at Chelsea".

Can only hope this report is bollocks or Tuchel talks with Boehly and says not a f**king chance.

Only way this works for Lukaku is of we fire TT and hire a counter attacking specialist manager, like Conte. Cause Lukaku cannot and will not put the effort in to make it work in TT system.

If we'd signed him when Conte wanted him instead of Morata his Chelsea legacy would be very different

Yep, also Conte might still be here and we might have had at least 1 more PL.

Conte's Tottenham were 10+ points behind us when he took over and they nearly caught us. That's with a worse squad and no pre season. He's a seriously underrated manager

Can only hope this is the main and only talking point between Tuchel and Boehly.

Wonder how the new owners would have got on with Conte.

As I see this he will stay in the next season. Our main focus is going to be on defensive line and not sure how fast we will see bids on Ziyech, Werner, Pulisic.

I just hope we won't put Broja on loan again, he has to stay with us next season and fight for his place.

About Lukaku, it's his career, I'm not sure he wants to have another season like this as a striker. He needs confidence, goals, be a key player. He has to change everything about him in the next season. His stupid interview just ruined everything, he has to focus on working his way tactically and be there when we need him. If he is ready for that, then he should prove and say that, if he wants to leave he better say it.

That is also something he really knows and loves. To have a tactical project with a tight schedule. He is a brilliant manager no doubt about it. But we all know Spurs is a stopgap for him. He could leave to manage PSG this summer for all we know.

And we can't compare the seasons. We played second most games in Europe only behind Liverpool and were involved in 4 finals. Tottenham basically played for Premier League and top 4.

Still think he can finish.. always been very streaky.. i get the blame on lukaku.. but i cant believe how our entire forward line not just lukaku has underperformed so much... Its not as if werner pulisic ziyech havertz have been better.

But the difference is they all have some systematic use and work hard to somewhat make up on it. Havertz up front even when he doesn't play well himself facilitates the rest of the team (ala Real away), at Juve at home Tuchel basically told Pulisic to run around at false 9 while James, Chilwell and Callum done the damage on the ball.

If Lukaku isn't scoring we're literally getting nothing out of him being on the pitch. He not only doesn't facilitate the performances of other players like Kai he restricts the fluidity and makes the set up static, he doesn't put a shift in like Mount, he doesn't press intelligently or atall like all the other attackers.

Lukaku has to score at a very huge rate (including against big opponents) for his place in the team to even begin to be justified.
