Lukaku - 100m - FLOP Havertz - 70m - Jury is out Kepa - 70m - FLOP Morata - 60m - FLOP Pulisic - 57m - Jury is out Torres - 50m - FLOP Werner - 47m - FLOP It never works and we are always left trying to get rid of them for years. In what way is the Jury still out on Pulisic? If anyone hasn't reached the obvious conclusion by now I worry for them. Looking at that list Werner and Havertz were the only 2 player I had high expectations for prior to signing for us. I felt the rest had already proved themselves not good enough prior to signing for us or were past their prime in Nando's case. Edited August 12, 20223 yr by HazardousChoice

Of the 10 defenders below (I'm ignoring Cuadrado because he was a winger when we signed him), only Baba and Zappa have been poor buys. Obviously early days on Koulibaly and Cucurella, but so far so good ! Wouldn't say Chilwell was a good buy myself. We paid a massive fee for a player that isn't top tier and so far he's had an inconsistent season and a bad injury that derailed his 2nd one. The Jury is certainly still out on Ben and I worry for him if Fofana signs as I'd expect Cucurella to start most games at Wingback then.

I didn't say Chilwell was a good buy either ; I don't think anyone would disagree that he made a great start, faded, came back very strong in second season (and then got injured). He's definitely a long way from being a bad buy like say Baba Rahman though, and he still has an excellent chance of ending up in the "good" category by the time he is done here ...

August 12, 20223 yr I don’t recall Liverpool fans having any issue breaking the world record fee for a GK and CB at the time. I swear it’s only our fans that get bent outta shape about price. Edited August 12, 20223 yr by Sconnie Blue
August 12, 20223 yr Ben Jacobs update: Wesley Fofana update. Currently more of a back and forth, which is exactly what #CFC hoped for after first two bids rejected. Chelsea have been using intermediaries to try and speed up a deal instead of just 'blind' bidding. #LCFC stance has softened from 'not for sale' to 'not looking to sell'. Fofana still expected to play against Arsenal unless anything dramatic changes this evening. #CFC hoping for under £80m with an appealing structure to Leicester. But it still may take a world record fee. Chelsea not only want a slightly cheaper deal (normal when negotiating), especially with their initial valuation closer to £55m. & they'd also prefer Fofana not to have the tag of 'world record defender'. That comes with hype & pressure. Harry Maguire found this out the hard way. Chelsea know Leicester, should they sell, also want a replacement and may need the funds to get one. They're using this to try & move a sale along faster giving Leicester time to move in market. But #LCFC remain tough negotiators. Chelsea optimistic but deal by no means done. #LCFC still controlling the timescale (and ultimately the sale) on their own terms, even knowing Fofana wants the move. Other thing to add, once talks become verbal it's often less about placing a bid and more about back and forth before doing so, to try and cut out wasted time.

Don’t think it was the pressure that got to Maguire but more his extreme lack of footballing ability

Let's say Leicester want 85mill for Fofana, and our only gripe about that is the "world's most expensive defender" tag. Do what we did with Napoli, Sarri and Jorgi. Tack Sarris release fee on to Jorgis fee so Sarri is "free". Pay 60mill for Fofana and say 45mill for Tieldmans who would normally go at 20mill, as an example. Then we get a good midfielder too.

August 12, 20223 yr The worry is Eric Dire has his one good game of the season on Sunday, and we start chasing after him. Fun fact Eric Dire and Danny Dire went to the same secondary school and their PE teacher says Danny is still the better defender.
