July 6, 20224 yr Chelsea are ready to make their first signing of the summer by pressing ahead with a €50m offer for Sporting Lisbon's Matheus Nunes. Anyone know anything about this lad? Is this a Jorginho or maybe Kante replacement? Edited July 6, 20224 yr by DarkMata

July 6, 20224 yr https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.football.london/chelsea-fc/transfer-news/matheus-nunes-transfer-chelsea-fernandes-24411008.amp Not a replacement imo, I think he's there to complete the midfield alongside Jorgi, Kanté and Kova. If we're switching to a back 4 we may still keep a dual pivot. Either 4231/4222 or 442. Even in a 433 he can play as an 8 like Kova, Kanté, and perhaps TT sees him as a rotation option for the holding position with Jorginho. He may be the signing or one of them which allows us to switch to a back 4. Hoping if we are genuinely interested we get this done asap enough faffing about.
July 6, 20224 yr Certainly won't hurt to have someone adept at forward passing and breaking the lines, which apparently this guy Nunes has firmly in his repertoire. I'd see him as probably a replacement for Jorginho, who I think we will try and push back to Italy.
July 6, 20224 yr How does he compare to the Vieria guy Arsenal just signed? How will that impact the game time of Gallagher, RLC etc? I never heard of the guy or remember being linked with us, doesn't mean he's not a good player, but this is out of no where. Either we done all our homework without be noticed, or it's the start of panic buy.

Think if Gallagher is to be added to the squad which I think he will then we will probably need to sell a midfielder if we are to add Nunes.

He is very calculated when he does this. 25 minutes ago, icecoolguy22 said: How does he compare to the Vieria guy Arsenal just signed? How will that impact the game time of Gallagher, RLC etc? Unless he intends to switch to a mid3 it is a strange one. You shouldn’t be spending £45m on depth in a position you are already stacked especially in the Boehly era.

Not sure we are "stacked" in the sense that midfield is an area where we are in dire need of improvement ... Kovacic, Kante and Jorginho on paper are an excellent trio, but they are demonstrably short of what you need if you aspire to play a possession-based style against a low block defence. Nor do they provide great defensive cover for the centre backs - hence why TT has had to play 3 at the back since he arrived ... and then factor in that Jorginho and Kante are the wrong side of 30 now, and in the latter's case extremely injury prone ...
July 6, 20224 yr On Vieira, he's another short arse midfielder, and we have too many of those already. He's also very much an "attacking" midfielder. I dare say Tuchel probably wanted someone with a bit more physical presence (Nunes is a solid 6 footer), plus capable of playing further back in the pivot ...
July 6, 20224 yr Seems like a very similar player to Kovacic. I think Kovacic's dribbling is cleaner though, much harder for the opposition to tackle.
July 6, 20224 yr Looks like a #6 from the looks of him, which is great if it means Jorginho sees less minutes.
July 6, 20224 yr Not sure we need a Kovacic type of player in the midfield when what we lack is creativity up front (I'd like Eriksen or similar if Gilmour is not going to be kept in the team this season) or a DM to cover the defensive line. If this Matheus Nunes is neither, we will still need creativity and solidity in midfield.

IE to replace Jorginho, which is something we desperately need as I can't optimistically see either Ampadu or Gilmour doing a decent job. This link is barely concrete anyway.
