Sarr being linked to Monaco.
Alonso to Barceona.

Good. Whoever is willing to pay any sort of fee to take on Sarr get him gone. We also need to move past the Dave, Alonso and Emerson Era. They are not fit for the style TT wants to play.

So let go a CB for a wingback when we are short on CB. That makes sense...

I guess the Fofana and KWP deals must be moving along well then...

Chilwell or Cucurella

James or KWP

K2 or Sarr

Silva or Ampadu

Fofana or Trev

I guess then

clearly Tuchel doesn't believe Colwill is ready to play for us as of now

ideally i would like to have the options you wrote there but switch Sarr with Colwill

but if we get KWP, we could get rid of Sarr as KWP both can function as a cover for RWB and LWB which in turn can make Cucurella play LCB

so we can still play the 4 wingbacks back 5

KWP - James - Thiago Silva - Cucurella - Chilwell

imagine if the wingbacks constantly interchange positions with the RCB and LCB that would be chaos for the opponent

If Thiago Silva had more pace that would be a great fifa back line.

But a 38 year old defender and 4 Wingbacks back 5 while Koulibaly sits on the bench is one of the most horrific defensive set ups I could imagine.

Having our centre backs and wingbacks interchange sounds like more chaos for us.  It's like we're begging to be hit on the counter with very little actual benefit.

it's just for jokes not to be seriously considered

i could see us play with 3 wingbacks in defence though with Thiago Silva & Koulibaly and James as RCB

that would be a very strong back 3

I just really don't want to see our best player arguably the best player in his position on the planet moved to CB.

I could accept a  backline of

James - KK - Silva - Cucu - Chilly

But for me Reece absolutely has to play at Wingback.

If we sign Fofana as well I'd be inclined to move Cucu to LWB to start over Chilwell.

There's no player I can see who would offer us enough on the right to justify moving Reece.

i agree

but TT did it before

he played Reece on RCB and Azpi as RWB in the CL games

Is very simple HC. If you are facing a Pulis like defensive set up at the bridge you can leave Silva or Koulibaly and overwhelm them with a left side of Cucurella, Chilwell and Sterling and and a right of James, KWP/Dumfries and Mount.

Ah what a genius idea.

When facing a defensive team who's only real threat comes from set pieces leaving out our centre backs to play some midget wingbacks seems like a winning idea.

Playing wingbacks at CB will and should be a rarity.  A quality core of 3 centre backs Koulibaly/Silva/Fofana is our core.

So you are saying we should be more pragmatic against teams who's only goal scoring threat is from set pieces?

No I'm saying we shouldn't be absolutely brain dead and think we can stick 11 strikers in the team and blow the weaker teams away without showing them even the slightest bit of respect.

Starting centre backs at centre back isn't some kind of caution or pragmatism.

I understand our forwards are dross but trying to populate the backline with offensive options is pure Fifa muppetry.

How many times was Azpilicueta beaten from a set piece at RCB? Or James?

Probably much less than the amount of physical strikers who held off Azpi in the buildup to their attacks because he didn't have the size or the strength to get round them like Rudiger did so couldn't match his aggression.

I don't understand how anyone can watch Rudiger for us last season, Koulibaly in pre season or Forfana before he got injured and not value the physicality, Size and aggression top class big strong centre backs can bring or think we can replicate that dominance with a Wingback there.

If we lose that not only are we much weaker at set pieces we're giving limited opposition an easy way up the pitch.

I can see the 70 yard diagonals played up to Benteke against Cucurella now.

If you want us to be more open and have an easier time breaking down weaker opposition then look at replacing dross like Pulisic and Ziyech in our front line and or adding a long overdue goal threat to our midfield.

Silva Koulibaly and Forfana are all great with the ball at their feet anyway there's really no benefit to benching them to try to shoehorn another Wingback in the backline.

Right, but with Azpilicueta and James playing CB we didn't notice defending against set pieces being a blatant issue.

Don’t think I can agree any more..  I just find it amazing on how some coaches like to complicate football..  the only one who can claim to have success doing that is Pep..

everyone else like to keep it simple.. Fergie stuck 2 up top with fast wingers and won it all for 2 decades .. mou asked defenders to defend and attackers to attack and won the UCL 3 times.

klopp presses and plays direct with a high line..

so I don’t know why we need our Wingbacks to play as fwds our CBs as mids and strikers as false 9s .. just seems a bit overrated to me.

I disagree.

Playing outside CB in a back 3 is totally different to CB in a two. When you think of Azpi's attacking contributions a high percentage of his best one's came at RCB and while I appreciate its a different level James and Lamptey caused absolute carnage at youth level together.

The whole idea about a back 3 is to gain advantages that wouldn't be possible in a back 4. The opportunity to have two fullbacks on one side in the build up play is one of them.

Actually I'd argue Fergie's poor record in Europe was down to that, he stuck to his core principles which worked domestically in what was a tactical backwater of a PL at the time but in Europe against managers like Ancelotti, Del Bosque and Mou he was regularly and ruthlessly exploited, even the one year they won it they were battered in the final and got very lucky.

Ironically it was Mou (and to an extent Benitez) coming into this league with a more continental approach forcing his hand to evolve which in turn led to him starting to tactically competing in Europe in ways he simply wasn't previously.

Pulisic could do the job .

I disagree with that assessment, but also the previous. Fergie was tinkering in Europe long before Mou and Benitez came to england. He would pack the midfield in Europe, certainly he didn't play two fast wingers during the 99 run because he knew European teams would just boss the midfield. He was a great manager because he didn't settle for being the best in england.

Anyway, Cucu is a great signing.

No agreement with Brighton today then eh?

Last I read on it was 50mill for Cucurella, 20mill with a buyback of 40mill sees Colwill join Brighton in separate deals.

But then, we go on and buy this Chukwema from Villa who’s as likely to start at midfield as Colwill in the defensive line. And it must have been sanctioned by Tutchel. I sometimes don’t know what’s going on.

ps - I haven’t read all posts, but who the f**k is KWP?  Can’t you (and I mean everyone) write the name or part of it? I hate acronyms.

Kyle Walker-Peters from Southampton

i think it's a lot more likely that you bring on an attacking type midfielder in a game than you bring on a CB from the bench, with the 5 subs Thomas Tuchel might figure Chukwuemeka can give us something from the bench

still used an acronym: TT
