October 5, 20241 yr Positioning is quite suspect but has a good left boot.. a good squad player and could do a job.

As good as Cucurella is, I think Veiga can offer so much more when hes fully matured. Hes got abit of everything to his game. Cucurella has had a very good past year and has started the season solid but I get shivers watching electric wingers against him. Veiga, gives me more assurance when I see him as he is very powerful and has good pace and also good height.
October 5, 20241 yr Cucurella has the Chelsea and Spain NT left full back position locked down for at least four or five years to come.

October 8, 20241 yr I think its only a matter of time until Veiga is starting for us. Cucurella is a fun little pit bull chihuahua to watch snapping at peoples heels at the moment but Veiga seems a lot smarter with his defending and offers a lot more on the ball. October 13, 20241 yr He made his full debut for Portugal last night. He started alongside Dias, which was a big call from Martinez considering he left the likes of Inácio out and Antonio Silva was left on the bench and he was up against Lewandowski. Seems Martinez and fans were very impressed by his performance too. https://www.sportskeeda.com/football/news-he-special-profile-portugal-boss-roberto-martinez-hails-chelsea-star-fantastic-display-robert-lewandowski-s-poland https://tribuna.com/en/news/chelsea-2024-10-12-portuguese-fans-rate-renato-veigas-full-debut-he-started-at-cb/

Took on Lewandowski a couple of times and outmuscled him.

October 15, 20241 yr See, from the time I started watching him with us I kept thinking “yes, hes good going forward, he looks good at LB…. But couldn’t he absolutely dominate as a CB?” His pace, power, comfort on the ball. He seems like he’s just growing into his body and realizing what he can do as he fills out. Gets better seemingly every time he plays. Cucurella and Colwill both will have to be top top on their game. If Colwill is ever out he gets in at LCB ahead of Benoit comfortably for me.
October 21, 20241 yr What a find this player is. Not very often you find a 21 year old player not scared to take risks against title contenders. It’s a shame most of his through balls didn’t come off but I still liked how he did it anyway, we need more of that.
October 21, 20241 yr Think he should have started at LB instead of Gusto. I can understand why Enzo might have been hesitant for him to play a full 90 against Salah but this kids good enough.

Not to sound like Bob, but who will feed Sancho? 😂 In all seriousness, not sure Veiga is good enough on the ball yet to be this LB to CAM hybrid we need in this system that has 2 deep CMs. No wonder Maresca likes Cucurella.

Veiga is better on the ball than Gusto is on his unnatural side. Pretty useless with his left foot.

Gusto went LB because he wanted to start James at RB, rightly or wrongly. Personally I think James should have been a 2nd half sub and might have fared better than against fresh players. That decision brought a lot of imbalance to the defence as defending we were off it and offensively too, the support from the LB and RB wasn't too good. James did play a few good balls forward though, but he wasn't too fit for making runs and being as physical as we know.

LB to CAM hybrid 🤣 I know what you mean but it still made me chuckle. What’s next, CB to RW hybrid?

I like this kid and I actually think he can invert well too, but the difference between him and gusto and the reason I believe maresca played gusto over him is speed (i also think he may have better close ball control too but irrelevant for this bit). He's not as fast as gusto. TAA played more in his own half than he ever did. He didn't leave the space behind for gusto and sancho. Slot set them up to defend with a low block whenever we got the ball into their half. Unfortunately slot won this battle. But personally I'm happy with this "kid" so far (I swear he looks more like a 70's porn star, lol).

January 7, 20251 yr I mean from what I’ve seen of him so far, albeit he’s only 21, he’s a bit pony? If we can turn a quick profit then why not. Edited January 7, 20251 yr by The Boehly Babes

Depends on two things for me. 1. Is our plan with Maresca a long term plan? If so he does not really rate Veiga it seems. 2. Was he signed as one of the players the SD and scouts believe fit in to the model to buy cheap and sell for a quick profit to make money/help with PSR. If either of those things are true, and we can get say 25mill or more plus a sell on/buy back (sell on If we dont buy him back activated, if we do then it is not). Then why not. Biggest concern I have is I don't trust these people to add what we need. 2 and a half years in and the team still does not have a spine capable of competing at the top. Spine being 5 players, keeper, CB, CM, main attacking creator and striker. They have spent nearly 2billion and have Caicedo and Palmer to show for it. 2 of 5 pieces.

I don’t really think he’s been that bad. For the price we paid and his age he’s well worth keeping around as a squad player. I know he’s a CB normally but he’s looked better at left back when he does play.
