December 8, 20241 yr If it were possible I would have our under 21 coach and team go in place of Maresca and his team.

December 8, 20241 yr It’s -8c apparently. What’s the deal with the league table? Do we need to win this one or can we really make big changes?

Definitely qualified for the knockout rounds although don’t necessarily have a bye into the round of 16 yet. Even if we did I’d say we should still stick with similarish teams as previous rounds rather than playing an entire u23 side. Could be important to keep the fringe players involved and with some match sharpness. Edited December 8, 20241 yr by Dubair
December 9, 20241 yr looks like Neto will be playing as he is banned for next PL game Jorgensen Disasi Tosin Veiga KDH Casedei Neto Felix Nkunku Mudryk Guiu
December 9, 20241 yr Astana, a very modern city designed by an architect in Japan, and an amazing place to visit. Unfortunately the team was completely designed and built in Kazakhstan, and not so great. 0-4 Edited December 9, 20241 yr by TheBeard

I'm not taking anyone who might be needed in a PL game for the next 2 weeks. No one's being kept sharp by flying for 20 hours to play a game in a ice bowl.

No disrespect to Astana, it's just the circumstances around this game in particular, the hectic festive schedule in the Premier League and our own promising standing maybe putting a title run. You just don't take players with recent injury problems like Nkunku or Neto to that place for a pretty much meaningless game. I wouldn't even risk Chucky for the sake of his career, but if he doesn't play here he won't play anywhere so there's that. Give Bettinelli his only game of the season. Casadei is suspended so play Tauriainen/Kellyman. Bettinelli Disasi - Tosin - Veiga/Chilwell KDH - Tauriainen George - Kellyman - Chucky - Mudryk Guiu

Meh , they could get injured in training too. The first 11 and 1-4 usual subs/rotation players I can see the argument for. The remainder could all do with some game time even if it’s against a poor team to build confidence and morale. Fernandez’s recent resurgence started against Fc Noah
December 9, 20241 yr Maresca has added another 6 academy players to the B list making 11 academy players in the squad so I’d imagine up to half the team will be from the academy. I don’t think guys like Neto or Nkunku will play as Maresca has already said there will be lots of rotation to the PL team over the next 5 weeks or so Edited December 9, 20241 yr by 19seventyone

Leave as many at home as possible.

But they are a lot more likely to get injured playing 1) in a game after they've just flown for 11 hours (remember we don't play our South Americans after an international break) and 2) in weather conditions colder than you'd see in any game in england.

List B is supposed to be only 5 players iirc. I can't recall if under 21s are counted or not...like the EPL 25 man squad list.

Maresca added 6 more to the 5 already on the list so all 11 are……..Harrison Murray-Campbell, Kaiden Wilson, Tyrique George, Kiano Dyer, Harrison McMahon, Samuel Rak-Sakyi, Ato Ampah, Max Merrick, Josh Acheampong, Shumaira Mheuka and Richard Olise Id imagine Josh Acheampong will definitely start but haven’t seen enough of some of them to comment further Edited December 9, 20241 yr by 19seventyone

Not sure I want Jorgensen going as ideally he replaces Sanchez. At most from the first team squad these are who I would like Maresca to take on that long flight to the -18 frozen pitch: Jorgensen (or Sanchez preferably), Bettinelli, Tosin, Badiashile, Veiga, KDH, Carney, Mudryk, Madueke and Guiu. Make the rest of the team and squad from the 11 19seventyone stated are in the B tier above.

December 10, 20241 yr Weird one to prepare for. Astana's league season finished about a month ago (having started in March); since then they've only played the League Cup final (which they won) and a home draw against Vitória de Guimarães. Add to that freezing conditions and an 8,500-mile round trip, and a league game at home to Brentford 72 hours later. I'd be reluctant to risk anybody we're looking to start on Sunday, in particular Madueke who will presumably be starting over the suspended Neto.
December 10, 20241 yr I'm with you lot now. At first I thought send in the b team with a couple of "select" subs and the rest from the development squad. It would keep the momentum going. Now though I'm more worried about injuries and would do the opposite. Mostly development squad members under 21 and a few "game changers" from the main squad tagging along as subs, players that can travel well and don't mind going. Just in case we need them.
