It occurred to me that I don't actually know anything about Bournemouth so have done a little half-time reading. Sounds like it was initially populated as a relaxing sea resort sometime in the mid-19th century. My guess was going to be fishing or shipping.

It's never been know for it's fishing or shipping, not even close. It's got a fabulous sandy beach but gets absolutely rammed in the summer. My youngest Son got married in a marquee on the beach in 2016. A marriage that lasted not much longer than our defence at Leeds in midweek 🤣
