As we've seen many times, signing an established player is not a guarantee of success, but probably less risky than a prospect who might never work out ... and lots of intangibles as well e.g. having a decent role model for the younger players, so that they develop faster and further.

Not a chance he wanted to come back.Wages and the other clubs in for him made this a non starter. If we are prepared to pay that much I don’t understand why we aren’t going for PL tested CB’s. For another 25 million we might be able to get Murillo or maybe even Van De Ven (a bit of sick in my mouth there). Both still young enough to fit our model. If we sell Enzo I’d go after Tonali at Newcastle. Reckon he’d do well for us.£70m minimum

At £50-60m, there’s little sell on value and adds to an already bloated FFP list. That is the bit that does my head in. Arsenal paid €15m for Mosquera, that is a punt. A £50m signing should be a plug or play, not an opportunity in the market. This is the same club that paid £17m for Washington & £19m for Kellyman from Villa u18s
January 18Jan 18 I understand that this might seem strange to you, but FYI his stats are exceptional. No one here wants to see him leave, regardless of the transfer fee.He absolutely must help us get back into Europe. It will be early enough this summer that we'll see Premier League clubs, Bayern Munich, and some Spanish clubs (and also PSG) battling it out with tens of millions to sign him.Our club is financially sound. Our owner is a billionaire... We have other very good young players who will bring in a lot of money. We're not in a rush.Don't forget that our academy has produced Dembele, Camavinga, Doué, Tel, Ugochukwu.... and just this week it was ranked the 4th best academy in Europe.
January 18Jan 18 Of course th briefs are out that many top European teams want him, including Arsenal.Past few years it seems to me if a top European team actually wants one of our targets they get him not us.

We’re due another Palmer or Estevao from young signings (Caicedo was already pretty established given price). Can you point to any of those stats you reference? Would love to learn more

It's also much harder to sell a player on 300k than it is a player on 100k, especially if that player is a bust.
January 18Jan 18 The same problems are going to exist. Too young to be expected to put in good performance every game, too young to seriously impact that defence in a positive way, too young to really demand anything from. Also, what about Anselmino and Sarr? We just stockpile all of these young CB's with similar profiles.

He's 20m because his contract runs out in 6 months. He's the most in-demand defender in world footballIf he has 3 years left on his contract, hes 80m and he's still 200k+ in wages.Liverpool, City and Madrid were all looking at him. City beat the others. We haven't been in the running for those players for 10 years. Clearlake or no clearlake. Now we are in the running for players like Murillo, who are an extra 20m on transfer and a bit more in wage. But I don't know if we can actually afford that anymore. January 18Jan 18 I wonder if that means one of the other CBs are leaving. Fofana TrevTosinBaddersColwillJosh And now Jacquet. 7. Too many
January 18Jan 18 Is Jacquet really coming though. Been down this road of bo**ocks so many times. Just because the player has agreed terms, it means nothing with our negotiating team.
January 18Jan 18 Ideally we’d probably want 5 dedicated CB’sColwillJoshFofanaNew signing or Sarr or Anselmino New signing

What say you Pierre? Is he the Estevao of centerbacks?

January 19Jan 19 Blows my mind the amount of money that they have wasted on bang average players and “promising” youth players. I don’t trust them.

I'm sure Disasi, Tosin and Badiashille could get some decent stats playing in that league. PL is a whole different ball game.I used to love us signing young players where there is huge potential but we now have a squad full of them with the potential often not being realised. Everyone know we need a more balanced side with a bit of experience, so this signing just underlines the fact that the people running our club are clueless (and only interested in re-sale value).
January 19Jan 19 Terms agreed then.So where does he fall in the pecking order? Is he above or below Anselmino who in turn is above or below Sarr? I presume above Disasi…Also great to see the faith being put in Josh that ANOTHER CB is being bought in on an exuberant fee.
January 19Jan 19 No way we are paying more then 42million pounds for him, there is now talk of giving them money plus either Josh or Santos (madness)i think its the usual "Lets pretend we are trying to sign a player to quell the fans noise", only 12 days to go, also they are trying to flog ENZO to Real Madrid, cant see that happening until the summer
January 19Jan 19 The FBREF scouting report :Not sure this is a £60m player ... and certainly not for someone with such limited career experience (<2500 top tier minutes)Then again, this is Mamadou Sarr LOL
