De gea makes saves that have been routine for courtois since his loan spell at Madrid. However, because de gea is a utd player, his shot stopping is over exaggerated by the media.

n the latest statistics released by EA Sports performance index Chelsea Thibaut Courtois has been named the top ranked goalkeeper in the Premier League after 15 games into the season. The Belgium international has been impressive form since returning from Atletico Madrid in the summer where he had been for the past couple of seasons on loan.

The rankings are made up by a number of criteria in which players score points for each game they play in. Courtois currently has 180 points from the 15 game he has played in which gives him an average of 12 points per game. His overall Premier League ranking is 56th which did drop from the previous week because of the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend. Courtois is currently 4 points ahead of West Ham United stopper Adrian followed by Manchester United star David de Gea in 3rd position who is on 169 points.

It looks like the race to be named the top ranked goalkeeper could go to the wire and it may be come down to two of the best young goalkeepers in world football in Courtois and De Gea. The two keepers have been in good form this season and have saved their club’s on several occasions. Courtois has already established himself as his country’s first choice and De Gea finally made his competitive debut for Spain earlier this year. Their rivalry is likely to go on for years and one of them is destined to be named the world best goalkeeper in the near future.

For me, the biggest difference between Cech and Courtois is that Cech doesn't have the composure to pass the ball out first touch from defence (aside from ability at crosses). We keep surrendering possession because he has to hoof the ball out when it comes to him. Great keeper, will continue to make amazing saves and marshal the defence well, but not very suited to our current (intended) style of play.

The cross he stormed out of his area to punch but only made weak contact for me showed why Courtois has been preferred.

Courtois is claiming those confidently and efficiently, it's a small thing but those small things make all the difference.

Agree with the last two posts. It was annoying yesterday that the ball was being hoofed up the pitch rather than being played out of defence .

No doubting Courtouis is the future, but I still  rate Cech as a better keeper for the time being.

I think he deffinatly organizes the defense better but that comes with time and expirence

This is why i think Courtois is better than De Gea. De Gea is making great saves but in the air he isn't anything special at all. He's a great shot stopper but most keepers are, i much prefer having keepers who can take control of set pieces and crossing.

100% agree, De Geas saves look more impressive to the majority but its the other things that help the team massively that go almost unnoticed. Also the fact that our defence is a lot better Courtious doesn't have to deal with hardly any 1 on 1s

If he did then he wouldn't have been our number 1 for a decade.

Do you think Tiger Woods has an issue with his short game?

Well if he did then he wouldn't have won all those majors.

EXCEPT....issues develop over time. Tiger now is not the Tiger of 7 years ago. Torres is not the goalscorer of 6 years ago. Cech is perhaps not the keeper he used to be.

Cech voted goalkeeper of the year last year however despite not playing cannot make the list and has 3 prem keepers (2 from last year) above him. What trash this list is.

No more or less than any other goalkeeper playing at the highest level.

Then it makes sense why you think Cech is still better.

Personally I think he developed an issue last season that still persists now and that Courtois seems to dominate his area better than Petr did even at his best.

Got home and put sky on earlier and they had some sh*tty poll on best gk in the world, and some clueless morons had voted de gea ahead of both courtois and neuer. man utd are now buying votes on pointless sky sports polls now  :face_palm: or maybe it's the delusional liverpool supporters voting too because they think only the world's best gk can stop them from scoring. it does make me question whether these voters even watch football outside their own teams.

Just shows how fickle football fans are. A string of good performances and a bit of media attention and all of a sudden De Gea is voted better than everyone else.

Just to add, in the 45th minute of the Hull game he comes rushing right to the edge of his area to deal with a Huddlestone cross in and just flaps at it. That is something in his game he never used to have before 18 months ago.

We're going to Stoke on Monday. He did the exact same thing when we were 1-0 up for Crouch's goal and the match turned on that. That's why I'd always pick Courtois over him.

I'm very happy with having Courtois as our number one. No doubt that Petr is still one of the best in the world but I do feel that Courtois just has the edge in taking crosses and also in quality of distribution. And I guess he'll only match Petr's authority and organisational skills as his experience grows.

I can't think of any other club at any other time that have boasted two of the worlds best keepers in their squad. We are very lucky.

Agreed perhaps Real Madrid with Lopez and Casillas a few seasons back but arguably Casillas had started to decline already by that point. I think it would be in Cech's best interests to move to a team where he would be guaranteed a starting spot which is pretty much anyone bar Bayern Munich.

  • 5 weeks later...

Is this a thing again or it it just Courtois's injury?

Courtois was on the bench for the last game so presumably was considered fit if needed ?  I'm not sure who we have in reserve now that Schwarzers gone.

I still rate Cech higher than Courtois though.
