Martin O'Neil sacked by Sunderland

Featured Replies

Just been announced by Sunderland tonight. Quite surprised by the number of clubs sacking managers at the moment (i.e Reading, Southampton and now Sunderland).

Good decision or bad decision?

Not really sure what they were expecting when they hired him in the first place, he's an awful manager.

It's only a bad decision because there's no one who could come in and do a better job right now, unless they look aboard for other managers but what are the odds of that. Probably some mug like Phil Brown will be brought back into EPL management then they will be upset the following season, if they survive that is, when this happens all over again.

I'd have O'Neill in to replace Interim in a heartbeat.

I bet O'Neill would've picked Hazard today.

I've never rated or liked O'Neill, even including his playing days. I just don't understand why he is rated so highly as a manager, after all, he's only been in charge at Wycombe, Norwich, Leicester, Septic, Villa and Sunderland, and hasn't set the world alight at any of them. I certainly wouldn't want him at Chelsea!

Ugly football that isn't particularly effective, either.

Sunderland aren't loaded with talent, but they should be better than they are.

Personally I wouldn't even consider O'Neil as a Chelsea manager. Yes, he's less of a c**t than the FSW. No, he isn't a better manager.

Disappointed to see Martin get the sack, but it's not surprising.

His glory days at Celtic and Aston Villa are well behind him, and he hasn't lived up to expectations at Sunderland. The club has been overspending on sub-par talent for years though, the squad isn't good enough for anything beyond lower mid-table.

I don't think hes a bad manager, but hopefully we don't get that new manager backlash next weekend and all the players come out looking to impress their new gaf and play their game of the season.

Too big a club to be on the periphery of relegation....Dont think O Niell would be a huge asset to us so ill sweep that thought away..He ran out of ideas at sunderland, so BEING A NICE GUY isnt an option....Could be a big enough task for RDM to get into

Martin O'Neill's managerial qualities are hideously overstated (bear I mind I do live in Leicester). I have no idea why we would even consider him when Moyes is apparently an option.

Di Canio has emerged as the favourite and is apparently in talks.

I have no idea if he's the long-term solution but short-term I reckon he could motivate them to beat the drop.

They are bang in trouble, that's for sure.

They have a horrible run-in and Fletcher and Cattermole are out for the season, and the teams around them are picking up points.

O'Neill had achieved 2 wins in his last 21 games, and 3 points from his last 8.

That is truly shocking, and he was given funds.

I think most clubs would have pulled the trigger long before Sunderland eventually did.

It's going to be very difficult for them to stay up and nobody would have predicted that at the start of the season.

No excuses Martin, you were a monumental failure.

Steven Fletcher

Stephane Sessegnon

Simon Mignolet

Adam Johnson

James McClean

Seb Larsson

Carlos Cuellar

John O'Shea

Lee Cattermole

Not that those guys are world beaters, but I disagree that they lack the talent to finish above lower-mid table.

O'Neil is just a hack whose tactics didn't suit the team he had. Sunderland aren't winning the Premiership anytime soon, but there's really no excuse for them to be 16th and only 1 point above the drop.

Di Canio is a bit of a nutter and his reverence for fascism makes me sick, but I do think he has the makings of a pretty good manager.

Reverence and fascism in the same sentence? Repugnance is a good word to combine with fascism!

At the moment I wouldn't see him as a long term solution at any club (somebody that volatile is going to end up falling out with just about everybody eventually) but he could be just the man to whip their desperately poor team into shape, at least in the short-term.

That said, I couldn't really care less if they stay up or not.

Thank lordy that we didn't end up with Di Canio at the helm. Could you even begin to imagine the hoo-har that it would have brought about?

It's certainly getting mentioned in the news today, mainly on the back of Milliband's resignation but, at the Bridge it would have likely resulted in news segments with footage of Di Canio being interspersed with shots of JT and Hitler!

Di Canio will for all his enthusiasm will still face the same problem that O'Neal had; sh*t players. The league table does pretty much reflect the cost and quality of players at each club, not the ability of any manager. So they'll still likely go down.
