Referees

What can be done about it folks?

We've been f**ked over so many times I'm even getting embarrassed for them.

I look at the name before the game and I know we're f**ked with the vast majority of officials.

It's a real concern and disadvantages us hugely.

IMO, the club need to compile a video of every injustice that's taken place this season and publicise it, no matter the reaction.

We will probably get scorned upon but it doesn't matter, we need to highlight it, if only to put pressure on officials and put them under greater scrutiny when officiating our games.

Stonewall penalties turned down again and again, unjust sendings-off and the fact not one player has been sent off against us, quite incredibly.

6 minutes added time?

I have never known a season like it.

What can be done .. ?

the standard of refereeing in this country is awful, the fa will do nothing though and just punish anyone who dares imply they're not up to the job.

The last 2 games have been shocking for us in terms of decisions, i'm one of these people though that feel it evens its self out during a season.Everybody gets decisions that go against them and for them during a season just recently that have been going against us.

I dont know who was worse though last weeks ref or today's for instance last week Oscar nutmegs Zabaleta brings him down and gets no card and then Ramires makes one tackle no where near as bad and gets a yellow, consistency of referees is awful.

Sadly spot on. Until we have a manager who actually care's and comes out and says it like it is i fear it will continue. Rafa should of kicked off today what would fergie or wenger have said? Put it this way they would of saw the incident and probably be on a FA charge by now.

Nothing. They did not like us so much before, but after the Clattenberg flareup it is even worse and they will punish us some time for it too imo.

^ Exactly right. If one decision goes against Utd Fergie uses it as a point of advantage for the rest of time.

I am more convinced than ever Jose needs to come back.

We get harshly treated and we need someone who can gain mileage out of that and stop it happening.

That is what we badly need and why the likes of Pelligrini won't change a damn thing.

Jose would have made mincemeat of the ref today, or, even likelier, the ref (and the fourth official for that matter) wouldn't have favoured them quite so obviously.

It's gone on all season and nobody can argue that.

We've been getting screwed over by the refs for a good few years in Europe and now it's starting to happen more and more in the PL. It's worrying.

It would be interesting if we had a list of the decisions that have gone against us this season or the pens we should have had,i expect the list to be long and half of the list would be from 1 game and 1 referee umm CLATTENBURG.

Someone should compile a list of times when the ref has plainly f**ked us over and has resulted in us losing points or being eliminated from cup competitions.

We have to start making an issue of it. If we say nothing, nothing gets done and we carry on being screwed over. I've lost count of how many red card offences have been committed against us this season, and yet not one has resulted in a red card.

Contrast with Martinez, who complained so loudly about that offside winner at the Bridge last season he got an apology from the referee's chief. So did Liverpool after we were awarded a penalty at Anfield years ago. Anyone think we'll be getting an apology for Kevin Friend's failure to send off Suarez for biting one of our players? Don't hold your breath.

Whenever a decision goes against Man U Fergie causes such a stink that the official in question isn't allowed near another United game for months, years in some cases. Every time we play them, Fergie talks about Drogba's offside goal at OT and how they never get any decisions at the Bridge. When was the last time a Chelsea manager brought up all the crap calls that have gone against us against United? Fergie does it for a reason. The club need to start standing up for us.

It's even creeped into the youth level for us, did anyone see the disallowed goals against us in FA youth cup ? they were shocking.

I also don't believe the whole it evens itself up thing either, in my opinion it's an easy excuse for bad ref decisions.

A refrain from one of my favourite Belle and Sebastian songs:

"We're playing for our lives, the referee gives us f**k all."

It's always been the way of the world, and always will be, unfortunately.

We need a real c**t of a manager, not an insipid cowardly piece of sh*t chair-moistener like Benitez, one of those respectable c**ts like José who will put a bit of stick about.

We get good and bad decisions, like all teams, that I don't care about....

It's the importance of the games it happens in which makes the situation harder to put out of mind.

Unless they start making use of a TMO then it is never going to change (remember David Elleray anyone never gave us a decision in his life and screwed us in a cup final to cap his career).

But UEFA & FIFA want control be it of games decisions whatever at the highest level it is not difficult to solve have a ref (could be an experienced retired ref) watching the match in real time and let him advise the ref on the pitch. For example yesterday after the bite the ball went for a corner with all the kerfuffle a TMO would have had time for a cup of tea a few sambo's and still tell the ref on the pitch it was a red card. In Super rugby the ref can go to the TMO on just about anything and has two phases of play to call play back for review and tries have been cancelled as a result, what they want is teh best team to win with as much as possible human error taken out by referees.

This need not stop the flow of the game but it has been near impossible to get goal line technology so this wont happen anytime soon, but it is difficult for a ref to see everything.

Who is worse Foy or Clattenburg ? I say Foy but Clatters runs him a close second. And yes Fergie will not stop talking about Drogbas offside goal, while forgetting Macheda's handballed goal in the same match.

As for Nani's red card in the CL Man utd and their fans simply cannot believe that happened and are properly traumatised over it, can you imagine if they'd had some of the decisions we've been given over the past few years.

As I said on another thread the press bias is one thing, but the officials are really hurting us. Mourinho is not afraid to call it on with officials and while some people were concerned that it heaped bad publicity on our club, I loved his unconditional defence of all things Chelsea while he was here, and lets face it we still get the bad publicity anyway.

Wasn't it Foy at QPR last year as well. I knew during the semi we would get nothing out of Foy. Jose would have been mentioning referee's all week in the build up to the Liverpool game putting the pressure on the ref (like fergie/wenger) making sure they knew they would have to get things right and at the very bloody least be fair.

Very true my friend and its gone past the stage of all of  us Chelsea supporters being paranoid.

It will be very intresting to see what referee's will be appointed for the spuds game and the game against manure,we can't have a ref what could jepodies Sir (F*** ME) Fergies  quest to beat Chelsea record points tally for winning the league, could we.

Oh and if your reading this JT well done for snubbing that prat from the FA you are a true Chelsea legend.

I have to disagree on the first point.

I was about to post a call for objectivity - to say that there's a big difference between refs being incompetent and cheating.

Foy is incompetent. He should never be allowed to officiate at Prem level, he's just not up to the job. He has huge difficulties with player control - this was evident when he didn't address Ferdinand's gestures and shouts at JT in the match which sparked the court case. Had he dealt with THAT breach of the football laws we wouldn't have seen the ensuing circus. He's shown a continued inability to control player behaviour before and since and was little or no better in the recent Man City match either... and not just for Kompany's antics against Torres.

Clattenberg is a different matter altogether.

I do my best to be fair to refs. I've got my badge, I know from personal experience how hard it is to be 100% on form and vigilant at all times even at lowly level 3 so I'm sure it must be 100 times harder to ref in the prem.

However, try as I might I cannot get past the only explanation I can find for his performance against United... that it was deliberate. Hand on heart I'd be saying that if the result and actions had gone the other way too and would have felt profoundly sorry for the opposition.

To quote something I wrote years ago when I was still a practising ref, "Most refs do a thankless job for a lot less money than the players and for no glory. Even in the park matches, when the players are in the pub celebrating their win or maybe showing off their cup we're on our own, writing up our match report. And most of them do it well. The best ref is the one you don't remember after the match - the one who wasn't centre of attention, who let the game flow and who applied the laws fairly while ensuring he wasn't put under pressure by one side or another".

Most of them are like that. Some are crap (Foy) some are cheats (Clattenberg) some are little Hitlers (Thomas, Rennie, Webb). Some, like David Ellery, are first rate. It's the luck of the draw who you get... or is it? Webb seems to pop up at OT more often than anywhere else! But to be fair, it's certainly in the lap of the gods whether he or she is having a good day.

What can be done?

Here's my solution...

1. Refs to be retrained so they consistently CONTROL behaviour rather than fear to do so. That means recognising, for example, that abusive language comes with a penalty attached. Hurt your foot, say "Oh f*** that hurts!", fine, call the opposition a f***ing knobhead (even if he IS!), you're in the book son. Players will soon get the hang of it and once they realise you mean what you say it doesn't tend to happen a second time! Likewise dissent - the captain goes to the ref to politely put the alternative point of view, a la Petr Cech - fine. The numbskull chases the ref around the pitch, the mob surround him, the idiot claps sarcastically in his/her face - you're in the book son. And that word "consistently" - that's key.

2. Increase the number of referees available for Prem matches in order to remove that feeling, real or imagined, of always ending up with the dodgy one in the cup matches, of "oh sh*t, not HIM again!".

3. Clamp down on the touchline-striding and watch tapping. Yes, I'm looking at YOU, red-nose. Refs do a bloody hard job and have as much right to respect as any bullying manager.

4. But, having said what I have in the 3rd point, there's nothing wrong with having a strong manager who is CLEVER enough to question the referee's decisions without being a bully, but maybe even with a bit of humour or irony. Jose was that man. The interim certainly isn't.

And, most of all, improve the whole image of referees from grass roots up. Teach your kids to respect the ref - that doesn't mean not to question him/her but to teach them the right way to do it. Encourage people, men AND women, boys AND girls, to take up this challenging, exciting role in the sport - trust me, it's something they will be incredibly proud of achieving. Increase the ref pool from the bottom and watch the greater number of good ones work their way up into the higher echelons of the game as time goes by. It's not a quick fix but it WILL be a fix.

I became a ref by chance - I was at the Bridge reading my programme prior to kick off when I saw a letter from a wonderful, sweet man called Bill Goodsell, secretary of the West London Referees Association, appealing for more people to come forward and become refs. I figured that I'd never play for Chelsea but here was something I COULD do. I loved learning about the laws, I loved the camaraderie, I loved the humour... and I got to meet Sir Stanley Rous in person too!

And I was just a 14 year old girl... so if I can do it, what's stopping you?

That was a good post from Noseating (that looks like nose eating which is quite apt really considering what happened yesterday)

I daresay deliberate spite is worse than incompetance but the end result is the same for us, Foy, Twattenburg, Frisk, Ovrebo and who remembers Halsey sending off Hasselbaink instead of Melchiot, that was just bizarre and possibly racist.

I know every club has bad decisions but I do feel we get more than our fair share, and a distinct lack of concern when they happen, its almost as though non Chelsea, the press and the FA think we somehow deserve it (I know that sounds mad and paranoid, and it probably is, but thats how i'm feeling this morning)
