Willian

Featured Replies

He always seemed to know what to do with the ball before it even came to him, his passing was superb especially that pass late on to Demba Ba.I always knew his work rate was good but last night he took it to another level,he never stopped running.

My opinion on Willian still remains. While I think he's a good player, we would have been much better of with keeping Moses.

If Chelsea showed some trust in Moses, we would be reaping the benefits. Plus, we wouldn't be strengthening the dippers and we would have saved £26M + wages.

He was a good player for us last season. Hideously underrated on this forum unfortunately.

But then again, I'm sure Willian will only get better and I'll be more than happy to eat these words if he does come out firing.

Totally agree.

Willian is playing really well right now, which is great. It great that he was called up to the Brazil squad. But the price tag was still too much. Willian isn't doing that much more than what Moses could have down if he would have been shown the same faith. They are very similar players and that money could have been spent on an area that is a need.

Whilst he's a good player, his purchase still baffles me. We have too many players in those positions now. Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Shurrle and De Bruyne would have been fine, we didn't need Willan as well. We could have spent that money on a solid CM or a striker who can score goals. All it has achieved is pushing the likes of Mata onto the bench where he shouldn't be because we've got so many attacking midfielders to keep happy, and constantly switching between about 6 of them every few games doens't give us any consistency, so it's no wonder they are struggling to create all that much.

Mourinho made a shrewd investment in signing Willian who is an excellent addition to the squad.

I really like him. He is quick, versatile, creative, and intelligent in his use of the ball.

He does not shirk tracking back and helping out in defence and offers Mourinho fantastic options in attack.

He should link up well and assist his former Anzhi team mate Eto'o in finding the back of the net.

At 25 his best years are still to come and his future with Chelsea looks most promising.

A shrewd investment...really?

A shrewd investment would be signing a first team player for a couple of million. Not spending 26M on a rotation option. Attacking players should not be primarily judged on if they trackback. They should be judged on the fact that they can open up stubborn defences.

The way I look at it a shrewd investment would be a manager buying a player that is the type he wants for the team...if he wants an attacking player that only attacks then he won't judge the player on his ability to track back.

The fact is Jose seems to want his attaking players to work hard and defend, for that reason I suppose you could look at Willian as a shrewd signing.

I just prefer Moses personally.

I wouldn't want to try to judge who is the more promising of the two on what I've seen of Willian so far, I wil say that I think Willian has already made a big claim for a starting place and I don't think Moses would get in ahead of Shuurle, Hazard, or Mata so I suppose if I'm honest I'd say I think Willian is the better player but my post was just to try to make a point about why Jose might have wanted him...he is a hard worker, can defend, can pass and can take players on.

Al things Moses can do but although its early to judge, I'd take a punt on Jose expecting more from Willian and being proved right.

Willian was a ridiculous signing. Now Liverpool get all the benefits of Moses's knack for running to the byline and punting the ball out of play.

At least he got to the byline. None of this cutting inside bullsh*t.

So easy to defend against us. Two banks of four, no wider than the penalty box and we're stumped. At least Moses gave us that something different.

When he was with Shakhtar, Willian was usually deployed on the left wing.

This allowed him to get forward and cut inside when the fullbacks were pushing up to provide width.

He also tracked back to defend which Mourinho requires from his creative players.

He has been used in the number 10 role when required.

He is a versatile footballer who can play anywhere across midfield.

I don't see Moses returning to the Bridge and predict a bright future for Willian with Chelsea.

If all our AM's do is attack, then we're going to leak an awful lot of goals..

Yeah you're right, and that's why I said primarily.

While I would have kept Moses instead of signing Willian because it would have saved us money, Willian is clearly the better player. The fact that he's barely coming off the bench for Liverpool speaks volumes. But I do think Moses would have been a fine back up, but he's not good enough to challenge the others for a place where as Willian is.

How can you compare Moses to Willian?

You take the two players, make two columns for both; pros and cons. Think of things to put in them and decide who do you like more based on that list...what? You asked.

You're taking the piss now. While Moses was a nice player and even scored some crucial goals, I can't really remember any games where he would come on and completely change the game in our favor. I highly doubt he would allow us to win games such as vs WBA, like you're implying.

Only one I can think of was the Shakhtar Donetsk game at the bridge, where he came on and grabbed the winner in the 90th. Fair play to him, he was ok last year, but Willian is a definite upgrade.
