October 15, 201312 yr Why do people think signing Willian stopped us from signing anyone else? It didnt, it had sod all to do with not signing a midfield enforcer. Spending £30M is going to have consequences on our transfer kitty. It might be the difference in being able to afford a CM in January / next season or not. All I'm saying is with that money I would have invested differently in the squad. It needs balancing, because if we lose Ramires, we're sending out an invitation to every other team we play, to overrun us in midfield.
October 15, 201312 yr Since when did one goal equal 30M? Willian has improved us no doubt, but imagine how much more we could have improved with a £30M Center Midfielder. Look what Youre does for City. Carrick for United. We don't have that Midfield enforcer. It's probably why we lose the midfield battle in a lot of the bigger games. I don't have a UEFA Pro licence or anything but if I did, I would have kept Moses here and bought a CDM. Moses has been excellent for Liverpool this season. He's massively underrated here. I think he'll be a very good player in the next few years and he's more suited for the prem imo. I dont really agree moses has been excellent this season, and i dont particularly rate him, but he was content with being a squad player and replacing him with a 30m player was madness IMO.

If he goes on to be our player of the year, then it's definitely money well spent. If he is just rotated as a bit part player, then I think it's an odd investment especially as Moses was doing pretty well for us.

But that has nothing to do with buying Willian, they have no link whatsoever. As usual Chelsea kept their transfer dealings to themselves, we have no idea if they were after another CM to add but couldnt find the right one/deals fell through/deals are still to be concluded etc. We have no way of knowing if spending £30m on Willian has any implications at all. Would you rather we just jumped in and signed anyone to fill a hole rather than get the right one as we have done in the past?
October 15, 201312 yr I think it's bigger chance of us just finding someone to plug a hole in january, instead of spending the £30mil-£40 mil required for Pogba, since we have already spent £30mil on Willian.
October 15, 201312 yr instead of spending the £30mil-£40 mil required for Pogba Christ player prices have gone mad.

It's no secret that Anzhi are in financial trouble after recent years of overspending and giving ridiculous wages (Eto'o for example) . Don't you think we paid that extra £15M odd because Abramovich is friends with the Anzhi owner and wanted to help him out? I have no doubt a part of that came into his elevated worth. Anyway, I digress. If Chelsea held that £30M and stopped being like a kid with too much money at a sweet shop and kept Moses at Chelsea (a very ample squad player) we would have more financial power for next seasons purchases which are going to be hefty by the way. - Ashley Cole replacement (Recent performances have been shocking, doubt he will be given extension) - JT replacement (Could get a new contract) - Lampard replacement (will be 36 in the summer) - Top striker My point is that the purchase of Willian lacks forward thinking from the club. I don't know much about FFP and I won't pretend to, but I don't think this is the right time to spend overboard on luxury squad players. I want Willian to succeed here. I really do and I would be the first one celebrating if he scored a goal. I have nothing against the bloke. I just don't agree with the purchase. Edited October 15, 201312 yr by JoeyN
October 15, 201312 yr willian cost 26.5m. pounds. not 30m pounds. yes it will affect the budget but at the same time, when have we ever been unable to fork out 30m on a player under roman. I think we didnt sign a centre midfielder as we have lampard and essien in their final years, and we have chalobah showing big big potential on loan. I think next season we will see ramires, van ginkel, mikel, chalobah, and a new midfielder.

I dont think Anzi were in financial trouble they just wanted to go a different route after a poor start to the season and instead of spending large sums on players develop there own.I thought Willian was 30M euros which is around £25-26M. Those positions you mentioned we needed replacing i dont think they look that bad. JT- We still have Cahill,Luiz and youngsters like Kalas and Omerou. Also been linked with several CB's so the board know its a position we need to look at, Lampard - We have Van Ginkel - Fingers crossed he recovers well from injury, have Chalobah aswell. Cole - Bertrand showed us last season when he came in for Cole he wasn't missed, i want Bertrand to start for us now.Still have PVA aswell. Striker - Well i dont need to go into this.

My apologies. £26M not £30M. Still doesn't change my opinion on the matter. You're putting a lot of trust in Chelsea to play some of our youth prospects. I would LOVE for us to put more trust in Chalobah, McEachran, PVA, Kalas etc but sorry but it just isn't going to happen. Edited October 15, 201312 yr by JoeyN

Anzi's owner lost the majority of his fortune almost literally overnight so they had a quick fire sale of all their best/highest paid players and cut the clubs running budget in half.

We are not playing KDB, Essien or Bertrand too much either. Our team has so much depth in quality you can't expect these guys to play, no way. But as someone smart once said "Better to be the worst player in the best club than the best player in the worst club"

But as someone smart once said "Better to be the worst player in the best club than the best player in the worst club" I'm not sure about this. If I was a promising pro footballer, I would want to play week in, week out. Especially if I was young so I could improve all the time. Who knows? With that extra improvement and play time you could force yourself back into a top side which I would be content with as long as it wasn't Liverpool. Edited October 16, 201312 yr by JoeyN
October 16, 201312 yr That is from a mouth of an ex-pro footballer who said it is pretty much how most of the pro's see it as well. The facilities, training, nutrition, latest tech, trophies, salary etc are all better in bigger clubs compared to smaller ones. And if you think about our club and the way we loan out I bet it is a good gig being owned by Chelsea and being loaned out to an okay club.
October 16, 201312 yr need him to score more goals like the Norwich one..Hes paid some of his fee back by being the catalyst for a great chelsea song which includes ......He hates tottenham...now thats value Edited October 16, 201312 yr by Mike Carefree
October 16, 201312 yr Chelsea 5 a side team: -----------------Cech----------------- ------Luiz----------------Ramires- ------Willian------------Hazard--- We'd be the best 5 a side team in the league. vs -----------Schwarzer--------- ------Ivan--------KDB--------- ----Mata---------Schurrle--- I want to see this game
October 22, 201312 yr A good read people. http://www.thesefootballtimes.net/#!willian-the-conqueror/c12rf
October 28, 201312 yr Surprised no one has mentioned the long ball he played to Torres, which caused the final goal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eid1STnAP0Y Edited October 28, 201312 yr by enigma
October 28, 201312 yr More a hoofed clearance than superb through ball, only Hart doing... whatever he was trying to do, created the chance for Torres. That said I thought he did well when he came on, worked hard and kept possession well.
October 30, 201312 yr Willian played well last night, some great tackles, good play on the wing, he was silky. He also tracked back in our own box making tackles, he certainly didn't look lazy last night.
October 30, 201312 yr Does anyone else think he is a little bit slow? Not Mikel slow but slower than our other attacking mids.
October 30, 201312 yr i thought willian looked decent, without doing anything spectacular. still adapting to the higher tempo of play i think, will need some more time. defo doesnt look like a 30 million pound man at the moment, but he's showing some signs of what he can do. hope to see him get more game time/starts. why not start him vs newcastle and drop hazard. gives him a chance to impress, and will give hazard a kick that he looks like he needs
October 30, 201312 yr Does anyone else think he is a little bit slow? Not Mikel slow but slower than our other attacking mids. Really? Looks quicker than Mata, Oscar and KDB for me. Also seems to press quicker than Hazard, i'd say he and Schurrle are the best AM's we have in terms of pressing, and defensively i'd say he's second only to Oscar. October 30, 201312 yr Love his work rate, presses the opposition very well especially when they are in their own half, not afraid to muck in and attempt some tackles... His sliding challenge last night on Jenkinson (I think it was) having tracked back from Arsenal's half was brilliant. He looks good on the counter, very quick in his decision making and his passing looks pretty accurate too.
