Filipe Luis to Chelsea... and Back Again.

Featured Replies

But he missed most of the season, Luis played over 40 games this season but didn't get a call up.

I've had a check and he only has 4 international caps in his whole career.

So my point is, if he's as good as some are claiming, why hasn't he been internationally recognised?

Some managers just have their certain players that they pick. Doesnt matter how good you are.

Didnt Kerry Dixon only get 1 cap for England?

I cant help but think he's a very decent player but just not top tier. 4 Brazil caps, cant get in the squad ahead of Maxwell, who himself isnt exactly world class @ 32 although at leat he played for Inter and Barcelona. apart from the last 2 years Athletico havent been anywhere. Filipe Luis hasnt played at the top level and hes not played in England at 29 and 20 million hes a big risk. Especially as his value will only decrease in the next few years, at least a risk in Moreno or Shaw would see him stay roughly the same value for the next 5 years.

Comparing assists between Filipe Luis and Ivanovic gets me a bit worried.

Are they both equally bad at crossing the ball? I didn't really follow atleti this season because I just don't like them at all, so I didn't see much of Luis.

But it seems he doesn't offer a whole lot in attack.

Ashley Cole is better than all the left backs England are taking to the world cup yet he isnt in the squad.

Can't believe any one actually thinks he is, he is not even the best in our team. It's just the fan in you thinking that, Baines & Shaw have been the best in the league.

Think it's the same reason Ivanovic is in UEFA's team of the year, if you want your fullback solid defensively he is the guy. However when you have to balance it going forward, he is a 6-7; looking at the masterful performance Marcelo gave as a sub in the CL final I will have the latter as the world's best LB everyday.

Teams like Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Italy in particular have managers that are renowned for picking the same players regardless of form. I wouldn't put much stock in him not getting called up.

But for none of the recent managers of Brazil to have given him a run is surely some indication?

I'm not claiming he is a bad player but praise such as "one of the best in the world" don't hold much weight when a string of international managers don't feel the need to even call him up.

In your opinion.

Cole hasn't played week in/week out so not actually that easy to compare but when Cole has played on the biggest of stages such as the CL against Atheletico Madrid he was faultless.

Ask yourself this question- If we are facing Portugal in the first knock out round and we have Ronaldo to handle , who would you prefer was making him- Baines, Cole or Shaw?

For me, it would be Cole.

Filipe Luis' agent says Chelsea will struggle to prise the defender from Atletico Madrid in this summer's transfer window.

Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for a new left-back following Ashley Cole's decision to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of his contract.

Reports have claimed that 28-year-old Luis is on Chelsea's wanted list, but having won the Primera Liga title and reached the Champions League final where they lost to Real Madrid, Atletico are keen to hang onto their star players.

Luis' representative Manuel Garcia Quilon told AS: "The interest is there but Atletico do not want to sell.

"It has been decided to retain a large part of the squad for next season.

"We will see what happens with certain players, but the intention is to sell nobody."

Brazilian Luis, who was linked with Manchester United in the January transfer window, joined Atletico from Deportivo La Coruna four years ago and is under contract until 2017.

The player himself is also happy to stay with Atletico, telling O Globo earlier this month: "I have a contract for three more years. My thought is to continue.

"We have to lift our heads high after the Champions League final defeat and think about the next goal."

Probably fishing for more money.

By that logic I would select Azpi or Ivan to play LB because u are asking strictly a defensive question. A LB needs to be able to get forward also. Something Cole does but his crossing and passing ability is just awful. Baines and Shaw are way ahead of Cole at this point when it comes to an all around LB. Cole WAS the best in the world, but he isn't anymore. Too inconsistent.

if anything this thread should be called 'Shaw - The Filipe Luis alternative'

If we wanted Shaw we could get him but it looks like we might choose Filipe over Shaw

Maybe the club has faith in either Bertrand or Van Aanholt coming good within the next 2-3 years and Luis could be a stop gap for that time period.

Perhaps the club think £30m and £100k a week for a teenage left back with little experienece of top flight football is not worth paying.

I didn't really take Shaw into consideration when I commented since it's obvious the club does not want to pursue him. People are mentioning Luis' age and that's what I was referring to.

Well call me old fashioned but I do like my defenders to be able to defend first and foremost.

I didn't say Cole was the best left back in the world by the way, just that in a game against a team with a player like Ronaldo he would get the nod from me, still think he can produce it on the big occasion as he proved against Atletico.

just the one for shaw, also one for Azpi. Iva (played 65 games this season!) has two. Cole has a couple as well.

So this is for all competitions right? Stats are a bit skewed, off my head I know Kolarov & Baines take free kicks/ corners. Would like to see how many chances were created if these are eliminated; Azpi (12), Ivanovic (29), Filipe Luis (28), Juan Fran (29), Alaba (39), Coleman (45), Baines (48), Marcelo (44).

Agree with you on the Ronaldo issue he is still solid defensively, going forward is where the problem lies. Our problem this season was against the smaller sides who just sit back and expect us to open them up, someone on Plains of Almeria has written an article to address this so I won't go in depth.

He had quite a few games more than Shaw, but what stands out is that the Chelsea fullbacks are the worst of the lot.

These stats are based on all competitions and are from the ESPN website.
