I think Gerrard's ott status is a reflection of how Liverpool as a club are in decline...they have had many better teams and players IMO, but cos they have been living off scraps for 25 years, Gerrard has been promoted far beyond his ability...put him in one of their top sides and he wouldn't be noticed...eg the team that was on top when I was growing up in the 80s, with Barnes, Beardsley, rush etc made a far bigger contribution and were far more entertaining to watch

It does my head in when they say he's their greatest ever player. I really don't get how even they buy into that given they've had guys like Dalglish and those you mentioned.

They buy into because they are trying to make up for 20 years of league disappointed. So if they hail him as the greatest ever when they look back on the league failures they will have something to talk about. Its the Liverpool way

One of the biggest players over the last 15 years of the Premier League is retiring when there's look little else of worth to talk about. The media have to write about something. Think some of the reactions on here getting a bit silly though.

Whilst I agree in part, those players in the late 70s and 80s were in great teams. I don't think Gerrard ever played in a great team.

Teams win championships at the end of the day and if he'd come to us, he'd have won league titles. I'm not sure if the lack of medals is the be all and end all of Gerrard's career.
