lets say for the past 10 year ,Doesnt mean he wasnt good but is there a chelsea player you always wondered what he was doing on the field or even the squad ??

for me it gotta be kalou , i think we all know why he was here , the future drogba blablabla , he wasnt that bad got some pretty nice goals for us but i always thought we could have a way better ...

SWP looked like he was a big fish in a small pond and ready for the next step up. The price was high, but I think we were expecting good things having already seen him. Kalou was voted best player (or young player) in Holland, and was looking a promising player.

Benayoun, Miniero, Sidwell, Ben Haim, Jarosik, Smertin (these last two played some usefuk albeit minor roles in that brilliant side though). Del Horno was the one for me though.

I just couldn't work out what Jose saw in him. I kept patiently waiting for him to show something, but he was just awful. Nothing going forward, below par defensively, not pacy, not comfortable on the ball, not particularly strong or determined. I think I may be being unfair on the guy, but at the time I remember it was exasperating watching him just constantly hoof those awful long balls into the channels and look like someone who could have been bought from the second division.

I don't know. He might have been a decent player in Spain. Just didn't show anything here.

I've re-watched that final twice and I think you'd have to be blind, or have no football knowledge to think that he wasn't a stand out player in that game. The Mikel criticism can become tiresome, the man has spent nearly a decade at Chelsea.

Watch him in the Munich final, never seen a player play so far above their level as that game.

On Kalou, double figures in terms of goals most seasons, 60 goals and 40 assists overall, scored a few important goals too, not a great player but he had good moments and he never complained. I'd take him over Cuadrado any day of the week and Salah and probably Schürlle, though selling Schürlle was probably the wrong decision.

This thread could get flamed  I never understood why Jose ( did he) signed Maniche, Carlo signed Yossi,  then there's the Sidewell or Ben Haim.. I remember Scolari once signed a Brazilian midfielder on a free, and he only played like 10 minutes, didn't remember his name or who escorted him out of the club in the end.

I would say Mikel but i'll be accused of not understanding the nuances of football or tactics or defending.

Benayoun is probably the worst player i've ever seen us sign. Marin, Cuadrado and Salah have all been amazingly underwhelming to date too.

Glen Johnson - He had potential, but he's never lived up to that potential, I think he's overrated and he's one of the most frustrating right backs to watch, always leaving huge gaps behind him and never getting back in time.

Verón

Smertin

Ji?í Jarošík - I don't want to be harsh, but the only thing I can remember about him is when he did an interview, and the interviewer was trying to pronounce his name and it was awkward.

del Horno - I remember him almost killing Messi, then I remember him playing against us the following season, he fell over the barrier at the side of the pitch, backwards and our fans laughed at him and chanted she fell over.

Boulharouz - Loved being sent off.

Maniche

Ben Haim

Pizzarro - 32 games and 2 goals, brilliant, makes Torres look like Drogba.

Di Santo

Quaresma

Zhirkov

Mineiro

Sidwell - Decent player but not good enough for us, a City type of signing.

Romeu

Marin

Benayoun

Salah

I'm not going to include SWP on the list, because I liked him and he had some decent spells for us, including a brace against West Ham etc. Going back to the nineties, I'd have to mention de Lucas, I think we got him on a free and you could see why. Kalou is far too good for this list, unappreciated player and Mikel is just to likeable.

I don't think SWP should belong on this list because I think it was pretty obvious Jose was adamant on singing a right-sided winger to balance the iinside-cutting of Cole/Robben/Duff.

Sidwell, Marin and Salah were cheapish gambles that never really got going.

Yossi wasn't a total WTF as we were so desparate for a creative player at that time.

Mineiro was the biggest wtf as he was signed as cover for a stocked central midfield.

DeLucas was a decent free transfer. That last season with Ranieri, especially.

Can't believe I forgot the current Watford manager. Jokanovic - had one good game against Man Utd I think, but that was all.

Mikel, still wondering

Say what you like about what he doesn't do but for me he is an important member of the squad.

Does what he is supposed to do, nothing fancy, but does it efficiently.

Eddie Newton. That is all.

Opps. Just seen you meant last 10 years. Disregard this :-)

SWP shocking, I'm sure some of the match day mascots would of fitted in better on the pitch than him, those were the days when we threw money at anybody, going back further, Dave Mitchell!!

The year Jose essentially fell out with the board and we ended up signing:

Ben Haim

Pizzaro

Sidwell

On free transfers and none of them every contributed anything of significance to the squad, woeful signings and the beginning of the end of Jose's first spell.

We also signed Malouda that summer who was mostly pants during his spell here.

We wouldn't have looked twice at SWP if he hadn't been English.

Del Horno was pants, especially considering Jose normally has a good eye for defenders.

And a new addition, Cuadrado. Still have no idea why we sold Schurrle and then paid more money for a worse player.

My one enduring memory of Del Horno is seeing him in a Mini Cooper outside Stamford bridge about 15 minutes before kick-off arguing with the police to let him in, while a crowd of bemused looking fans gathered around him. I think that was the first home match after we signed him; not the most promising of starts.

I think that's a little unfair... I thought he had some really good spells during his time at SB. Though obviously not a legend of any sort, I do think he was instrumental when we won the double... he was a useful to player to bring on the pitch in Munich around 70' in to the game if I remember correctly.
