Papy Djilobodji

Featured Replies

Baba, Papy childlike sounding names not unlike Didi, hope this is a good sign.

"Papy" is easy to remember, "Djilobodji" just won't stick around in my brain. Still, if I can remember "Azpilicueta", "Djilobodji" should eventually become easy.

Signed on a four year deal.

"Physically strong and good in the air, this limited defender is not exactly a marquee signing and is rated by FM as being no more than a good Championship level player with little scope for improvement. He’s valued at just over £1m and can be bought from Nantes for little over that. In my longest save, he never leaves the French club and never averages over 7.00 in a season, suggesting that Chelsea’s mooted purchase is a little panicky.

I do think that FM underrates some Ligue 1 players - many of Lyon's talents like Nabil Fekir have ridiculously low ratings for example. Even within Nantes, I would say Veretout is very underrated.

For the record, I do think Djilobodji is a pretty good Ligue 1 defender. He's strong, reasonably quick for a CB and is a good marker and tackler. He also throws himself about and makes a lot of interceptions, while his long passing is surprisingly good. However, he's prone to lapses in positioning and makes some dumb decisions.

If we were a mid-table PL club, I'd say this would be a good signing, maybe even a steal. However, we aren't. Like almost everyone else here, I'd rank him behind Terry, Cahill and Zouma, though he's not a bad backup to have. He is also still young enough to improve some.

I'm just shocked that the club didn't consult Alex before going ahead with the transfer.

Could have given this spot to Kalas, Christiansen or Omerou.

Chelsea announce loan to Vitesse in 3.... 2.... 1....

Actually, he's 26, so maybe not. Fingers crossed he's more Alex and less Ben Haim.

Having never [knowingly at least] seen him play, I really have no idea what to expect.

On the surface/to the untrained eye it does smell somewhat similar to the Ben Haim deal. Of course if we do end up signing Stones (eventually) he will effectively be relegated to fifth-choice centre back...

According to sky sports Yaya Toure is quoted as saying "I've seldom seen a defender with that good a left foot and right foot"

So either he rates him as a ball playing defender or has a foot fetish!!

I suspect the much-maligned (perhaps deservedly so) OP is a foreigner, who is spelling stuff as it sounds...maybe...

Based on my experiences on internet football forums, some English people do that as well. :happy001:

I'm not saying this guy is a nobodji but this has been an absolute clusterf**k of a window and pre season.

I don't understand how it's been allowed to happen given how well we did a year ago and how that got the ball rolling for our season.

Pfft.

Had anybody heard of Brano when we signed him for £6million all them years ago? Give the guy a chance at least!!! Also, he's in the last year of his contract so the fee isn't really a valid valuation. Though I do have to say I can't understand how we were so good defensively last season and so bad now. Baffled!!!

It's a bit odd, it's like everyone at the club (transfer team, management, players) became incompetent overnight.

Pleased about Begovic and Pedro though, but I'm really not sure what to expect.

According to the BBC, Nantes have announced that Papy has joined Chelsea.

For what it's worth, my phone's autocorrect system changed Papy to 'soapy'. Let's hope his defending isn't as slippery.
