What a tedious match, we dominated possession for 95 minutes but hardly threatened their goal at all. Slovakia shut us out and we lacked the guile to unravel them.

Well I'm lot more upbeat than most of you lot! England's biggest failing for years and years now has been the inability to keep the ball moving and retain possession.

We have had three games in a row, in a major competition, with a very young team, where we have kept the ball really well, retained possession and dominated. If we can add the finishing to it, (and also if our defence can hold up against better quality strikers), we may surprise ourselves.

Oh here comes the bitterness. Now now. 

65 shots in 3 games and only scored 3 goals.........says it all really.

That's fair but not scoring is a big issue. We haven't felt threatening in terms of goals all tournament.

Actually think we would be better off against teams that come to attack us rather than sitting with 10 men behind the ball like they all have so far.

England are a poor side in all honesty, to win you have to score and they don't look capable to do it enough to go far in this tournament.

Is my memory correct? If so, what is different now?

We will play any of either Austria, Iceland or Portugal, depending on which of those teams finishes second in their group.

That seems like the weakest group in the tournament. England lucky for their next opponent to come from Group F. Do you agree?

Good point Spud but I think Dan's post above is a good counter. For teams that play a more attacking formation it will perhaps give us more space to exploit in the final third. If I could fault Hodgson for anything tonight it was taking off Sturridge. He is the one player with the footwork and skill to make something out of nothing and weave his way through a packed space and finish.

I agree BUT, aside from Iceland, you couldn't say that Austria or Portugal are any less capable than Slovakia. We're also sort of saying that doing less well is a good thing as it's given us an easy draw but from now on we don't score and we are out. Sorry for my pessimism.

Fair point too but, having shown that we struggle to break down defence in depth, why would a team play open football against us?
