November 6, 20169 yr Definitely helped balance the team but not sure he is up to standard. The way bolasie breezed past yesterday and Tadic last week is concerning. He is contributing and playing solidly in the system so will give him a chance. Wouldnt be surprised if this time next year we have a better option and he is a squad player.
November 6, 20169 yr He was excellent yesterday. I think Chelsea fans are so used to Cole & Azpi that we've perhaps become a bit spoilt at left back, lol. Great going forward.
November 6, 20169 yr Lad has potential. Am confident he will develop into a solid player for us shut up some of his doubters.

Bolasie wasn't even a threat. Alonso's performance yesterday was top notch, both in attack and defence.

We just played a game where the team, Alonso included, restricted a good Everton side to just one shot in the entire game.

The evidence where tadic roasted him for 5 mins and bolasie breezed past him like he wasn't there on Saturday. I'm not talking about the team performance, and I've said he is a solid squad player. But up against a top class winger he will get found out.

To be fair most defenders get a hard time of it from time to time. A 5 minute spell of poor play shouldn't overshadow how good Alonso has been for over 270 minutes of good defending/attacking play. He may well get a hard time from a top quality winger but that's just guessing at the minute, so far he has proven to be an important part of what Conte is trying to do here. Can't fault the lad at all so far especially as he's playing in a new league, new formation and has only been here a few months.

Personally I don't think he has been that great over the 270 mins just solid. Thats why I said it wouldn't surprise me if this time next year there is a better option there and he is on the bench. For me just lacks the athleticism to be a top player.

That's fair enough, everyone sees things differently. I can see why Conte wanted him because he offers so much on that side of the pitch and allows Hazard more freedom to be his creative dangerous self. We always have Dave who can slot in if we require something different and that's no bad thing either. Overall I'm happy with how the defence is shaping up after the horror show we were previous to the shift in formation.

Hope I am wrong. It is definitely good to see us balanced with a natural on the left side anyway, so wouldn't be replacing him with anyone else in the squad right now.

Going by this logic, we should be worried about Cahill, Luiz and Azpilicueta because there was a few times in the game that Lukaku beat them in the air to knock the ball on. No player wins every single dual.........unless you are Ashley Cole dealing with Ronaldo that is.
November 8, 20169 yr Saw the PL stat leaders for gameweek 11 on Whoscored and Marcos Alonso tops the leaderboard for most tackles won. Who was saying he can't defend..

Who was saying he can't defend.. He has a habit of getting caught the wrong side some times and he doesn't have the acceleration to make up the ground. With 3 at the back it's not the biggest deal in the word, i think Moses has been less exposed because he has Azpi playing in behind him who is lightening quick. I'm not going to be using it as a stick to beat him with by any means, just shows that the stat's aren't telling the whole story

If Zouma could work on his on-the-ball game then i could see him ousting Cahill from that left centre back position

"Most tackles" alone aren't a good metric to show performance for a defender, though. For example, according to Whoscored, Azpilicueta has averaged roughly the same amount of tackles/game over all of his seasons with Chelsea, despite differences in performance.

It was more of a point to people saying he can't tackle. Using how many tackles a player makes is a perfectly good metric to use to show a player is more than capable of 'tackling'.

November 8, 20169 yr No , it's about positioning yourself so you are hard to be beaten. Not diving into tackles , standing off or going tight where appropriate. He's clearly bad at that and any time he's isolated he is in real trouble. He's a good wingback though , overall. Clearly in the long term he needs to improve defensively or he'll not be a first choice
