Marcos Alonso

Thought he was our best signing of the summer back in August, haven't changed my mind. Obviously was never going to show his best form in the first one or two games, but is a defensively solid, threatening when attacking specialist left back who will give us great balance over the coming months.

He was about as average as average gets, why is everyone wetting themselves? But his displacing Ivan and allowing Dave to play RB is worth 10x his playing ability.

Think we're just not used to seeing a decent specialist left-back playing for us these days.

True but comparing him to an on form Ashley or even Dave and he is miles and miles away but does a decent job

Well Ashley Cole was almost indisputably the best left back in the world for a time, not sure who is comparing Alonso to him? I do however think Alonso fits our current set up better than Dave ever could at left-back due to his great left foot and natural willingness to attack down the wing.

Come to think of it do we even have a single other left footer in the squad?

Well the reason I'm comparing to Ashley is to gauge Chelsea standards, Alonso is not Chelsea standards but he is filling a role, we let a very good left footer go in Luis and baba was left footed but he is out on loan, for me even baba is more talented than Alonso but the issue is he is less experienced and made too many mistakes.

Well he was decent this game, but Hull isn't really the most threatening side to play against (3 consecutive loses, having conceded 11 goals in these games) so I hope he'll perform against the top sides as well.

Good luck for him, and I'm all for ivanovic on the bench... or in a different team.

Solid performance, would rather a solid unspectacular performance from Alonso than a calamitous sh*t show from Ivanovic. Give him a few months and hopefully he can make the role his own.

well on the back of the last two games I think there are a couple of positive things to comment about:

-he can cross a ball.

-he's a natural wingback. in fact to me he looks more of a midfield player who can play in defence rather than the other way around. the way he defends makes me think he isn't really an out and out fullback, and when we play with a flat back four I think I'd prefer azpilcueta there. but as a wingback, it looks like he's very comfortable. and it now appears he isn't destined to be merely a backup. that is good news, as we needed someone capable of starting regularly. signs are that he may well be capable of that.

Signing of the century. :laugh2:

A decent left back, and finally we are playing a left back in the left back position. I think some of us forgot what it's like to have someone left footed and a natural in that position, that we are getting over excited of someone fairly average -- he is no Ashley Cole. Bertrand was just as good for us I feel, and has gone up a level now.

Obviously not knocking the lad though, great to have him here and seems like a very useful player! A good fit for this new system.

I was skeptical when Conte signed him, because I didn't really believe he was a Chelsea-quality left back. I considered he was better going forward than defending (albeit acknowledging his versatility).

However, he has certainly proven himself to be a Chelsea-quality left wing back. He's been quite energetic down the flank, his crossing has been a threat and he hasn't had to defend quite as much as he would at LB.

Alonso is not the quickest wing-back (which is what I like to see for modern full-backs or wing-backs) and I don't think he's top quality in defending but I think he does his job well and his crosses has added a new dimension to our attacking play.
