West Ham Utd Vs Chelsea (PL) Mon 06/03 2017 KO 20:00 GMT

Thought most players played well. Some sloppy passing throughout the game which you could see irritated Conte and they obviously didn't get the message, because another one gifted West Ham a goal.

Mistake-aside, I thought Dave had a solid game. Luiz battled well against Carroll, who barely got a sniff of the ball. Fabregas dictated a lot of play. Kante was everywhere as usual. Hazard was brilliant in patches, though he seems to drift in and out of games, rather than keeping up a brilliant performance throughout. Pedro a bit quiet. Costa is an odd one for me. He keeps popping up with goals, which I can hardly complain about, but apart from kneeing it into the net from 4 yards and a good turn and shot, he did basically nothing all game. So many of our attacks break down because he is either too slow to release the ball or he tries to dribble past someone and can't and it gets very frustrating to watch.

I concur regarding Costa. Yes, he's knocking in the goals but he gets fantastic support from Hazard, Pedro and the rest of the midfield to set him up. Every time I watch him play, I always get this nagging feeling that we can get someone else in that's a better fit.

I've never seen this type of pass before and have been trying to think of a name for it.

1. Back pass.  Nah.

2. A Hazard. Why not?

I called it a "back" pass yesterday.  However, we can't call it a Hazard when Ronaldinho did something similar in his time at Barca

Always satisfying to beat West Ham, and to be honest they gave us a hell of a scare early on, in my opinion.

However, we settled, let them run themselves ragged, and the counter attack for the first goal was sublime

I do agree with Conte's assessment that Hazard needs to be more selfish and go for goal.  A critique that a lot of us have had of Eden over the years, but if Conte is stating it publicly then i can hope that it will finally happen.  Had Eden been able to complete a pass that wasn't behind someone, or even been more selfish, then I think we could have put 3 or maybe even 4 past them.

Kante phenomenal, again.  The bloke is everywhere, and what a signing he has been. I know that he, and even Eden, were the talk of MOTM awards last night, but I really think our back 3 were outstanding.  Dave in particular was great, until his sloppy pass for their goal: however, I do think Zouma was in the back line by then and the overall shape and familiarity was somewhat changed at that point.

Glad of the points... onward and upward.

PS. we are 30, yes that's a whole 10 wins worth, points better off at this point than we were at the same time last year

Hard to be critical of anyone after such a great performance, but I thought matic might have done a better job in midfield than fab. More drive in the midfield. If fab could shoot more and better it might be different.

He could improve his corner taking as well. Come to think of it, we haven't got anybody that can take a 'devilish, whipped in' corner which frightens the life out of defences.

It would be nice to have someone like that, but corner kicks are a bit overrated. I mean, how often do teams *really* score from corner kicks?

From The Numbers Game:

Quote

The data show that, on average, about 20.5% of all corners (that's 1 in 5) led to a shot by the team that took the corner within three touches of the ball. . . Of the corners that actually led to shots within three touches, what were the odds that the ball crossed the line? . . . On average, about 11% or 1 in 9 shots created from corners produce goals. Incidentally, that's also right around the average ratio for goals to all shots taken in soccer matches (the Reep ratio). . . The yield from corners ranges from 0 to .07. On average, the data show that a corner is good for (drumroll ....) 0.022 goals. This means that the average EPL team scores 1 goal from a corner about every 10 games. And this helps to explain the lack of a correlation between the number of corners and goal scoring. The infrequency of the goals from corners combined with a lack of dispersion between teams in corners per game lead conspire to make corners mostly, well, useless when it comes to scoring goals.

I watched another vlog from a spammer pov but his angle is similar to tv so pointless to show, but they also showed how many people had already left when lanzini scored. Looked shocking.

After posting I dunno why I quoted you :blush2:

Do 'shots' from corners include headers as well?

Yes, headers are also shots or shots on goal, same as the in-game stats you see on TV.

Cautiously optimistic about this match. I never feel confident away from home against West Ham and this time is no exception.

Prediction: West Ham 1-2 Chelsea

Happy to have predicted the result correctly!

Hazard and Kante were the standouts for mine. West Ham had their moments, but I never felt we were going to lose this match, so fantastic to obtain three points especially with City drawing to Stoke on Wednesday.
