Gary Cahill should be dropped

Interesting you mention goal saving blocks and clearances but don't mention mistakes and the many times Cahill gets easily beaten. As for the goals, well I'd trade all those goals if it meant we could replace Cahill with a solid defender like Azpi (hasn't been at his best recently, but in general)

hes never been close to the likes of prime Terry and Carvalho and has always been short of that level.

Although this is a ridiculous thread to start people that defend Cahill by claiming he has helped us to win trophies in the past are deluded. Ivanovic helped us win loads of silverware but everyone agreed towards the end he shouldn't be starting and we had better options. Cahill is a good squad player but shouldn't be in the starting 11 every game.

Agree with everything you said except for Cahill not winning us trophies, he was very very good in the Champions League final, he also scored a lot of vital goals last season which definitely helped us secure the league.

Even with the mistakes, he has always been a better defender than the players you mentioned. Jones and Smalling have played at the top level for longer than Cahill and neither of them have had as good a season as Cahill. Also, you say you would trade the goals for a more solid defender, well, those goals have won us important points to win us titles.

You also said earlier in the thread that he hasn't contributed heavily to any of the trophies we have won. What a load of rubbish. He played a massive role in the Champions League win. You say any average defender can do it, well, actually they can't. I highly doubt the players you mentioned could have played as well in those games as Cahill did. To cope with the pressure of two of the greatest footballing sides to play the game isn't something any of the players you mentioned has ever done. There is also the Europa league final which he had a very good game in, he was one of our best players in the game. He made a goal saving block right at the end to keep the game from going to penalties. He has been solid in the league during our title wins too, more so in the first title he won.

If you think Cahill has been average for us over the years, then what do you think of Luiz ? If anything, Cahill has had a much more consistent Chelsea career than Luiz has had, so why not make similar complaints about Luiz ?

Also, nobody even compares him to prime Terry or Carvalho, so i don't even know why you mentioned it.

I agree that right now he is probably our weakest CB, but you are undermining his achievements. There is no guarantee we would have won any of the titles we have won without Cahill being there. You are basing everything on a bunch of what if's and maybe's.

He was pissed off that we beat United 4-0 last season because he wanted a draw due to Mourinho being there, even found the article saying he was hoping that game was a draw.

He also admitted he'd rather United win the league if he had the choice.

Huh. Which one of those dorks from ja606 are you?

You're right that there's no guarantee we would have won those trophies, but I honestly doubt that we wouldn't have won even one of those without Cahill. He wasn't critical to any of them. The closest would be the CL in 2012 where he did play well in the final, but i think a lot of players could have done the job he did. It was nothing special.

What are you hoping for when we play United in a fortnight ?

Thanks, it’s made my day that I unintentionally compared him to his hero Rafa. Who is a million times more successful, rich and all round beautiful than him.

If you're a decent Chelsea fan you would want to win against United.

I support both Chelsea and Mourinho so I want a draw

Sorry I didn’t mean that he wasn’t important in winning us trophies as I know he was. I meant just because he was important in the past doesn’t mean he’s still playing to that form now.

What a complete Knob. Oh well, he's banned now. Hope he is sleeping peacefully in his bed which no doubt has a matching Jose Mourinho duvet cover and pillow set.

Tosser.

Hell be back, but unlike most desperate returning banned members, he won't be smart enough to make alteration's to avoid detection.

Argo - our Forums very own Hercule Poirot!!

Keep up the good work of unmasking these WUM's.

I was thinking about what's different this season compared to last and I've got 3 main factors...

1. More injuries/suspensions

2. Our 343 caught teams out last season with a lot of our creativity coming from the wing backs over loading in wide areas. This is something other teams have adjusted to this season and as such creative output from both wing backs have dropped markedly.

And 3. More games/less time on the training park to work on tactics. This combines with 1 to make fielding a consistent line-up difficult compared to last season.

Given the fact we've had less time for tactical work, a less consistent line up and adjusting to teams knowing better how to counter us, this season compared to last......well, I'm actually kinda not surprised Conte tends to want to stick with a guy (Cahill) who while limited, sticks to game plan at a time when we are lacking tactical descipline.

Should probably look at that second Watford goal before you talk about tactical discipline and Cahill. He was way out of position chasing the ball like a school kid.

damn it the OP was banned - I wondered how he felt watching his mighty yanited get punked again @ The Bridge ;) - I still believe Phil Jones scored

GC has been dropped and he's been putting in better performances, I much prefer it this way, he's a very good option to have in certain games.

Can we really say GC has been bad this season so far? I don't think so. I don't really think any of our defenders have been, Azpilicueta & Luiz have been underperforming defensively in a handful of games, but that's about it. That's bound to happen if we haven't won many games though, other than that I'm impressed with the defence this season, our problems lie elsewhere and Cahill still has a future here.
