UK authorities have yet to renew Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s visa after it expired last month, three people close to the billionaire have told the FT, as geopolitical tensions rise between Moscow and the west.

The Kremlin-connected, London-based Mr Abramovich — who, with a net worth of £9.3bn, is Britain’s 13th-richest man according to the Sunday Times — has returned to Russia after his investor visa ran out, according to two people close to him.

Mr Abramovich did not attend Saturday’s FA Cup final, which Chelsea, the team he owns, won 1-0.

Fellow oligarchs Oleg Deripaska and Vladimir Potanin were both in London last week for a high-profile court case between the two men. Mr Deripaska is subject to far-reaching US sanctions that prohibit US citizens from doing business with him.

A third person close to Mr Abramovich said that his request for a new visa had not been denied, but said that UK authorities were taking longer than usual to renew it without offering any explanation. The Home Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Even if it's a just a hitch, it just seems that this may be a sign of things to come. Due to political confrontation with Russia the situation may get to a point where Roman will have to move. Hard to imagine someone owning a club and not being able to reside in the country.

Still, the club is in a healthy financial state and is one of the biggest names around, I think there'll be interested buyers.

I'm being a bit biased, but honestly the UK government are being petty without proof that Russia poisoned the ex-spy. Just because Roman is connected to Putin, does that mean he should be banished?

It's all up in arms at the moment, America were about to do the same with Fedor Emelianenko when he fought Frank Mir at Bellator, the FBI had to put him in a secluded room and question him for hours.

I wouldn't be surprised if tensions rise with Roman in the UK, especially given the fact that he supported Putin's campaign along with Fedor.

Will it have any effect on his ownership of the club if he's denied a visa, I don't think owning a company in the UK is dependent on visa eligibility.

Well, why would you want to own a club in a country you cannot even visit? I'm not saying this is definitely going to happen, but if it does, I cannot see him sticking around.

Roman is at the same time planing to build a new stadium worth a whole lot for Chelsea, UK really needs to stop blaming the russians for everything it really makes no sense that the western countries are so butthurt when it comes to Russia till the point where they are ready to be openly discriminative towards anyone that is from that country...

Let's not get irrational about it, Roman is one of Putin's closest allies. We've never heard about him having anything to do with Putin's campaign against the West, but when people are as closely linked as those two are, it would be silly to assume that Roman is only under the spotlight because he's Russian.

Whats irrational is to kick out the owner of Chelsea from the country just because he has a relationship with Putin, every single rich man from there needed to have some relation with Putin or he was more or less doomed, this is a big scandal and pure discrimination towards someone that wants to build a brand new Stamford Bridge and that boosted the economy of London in the past years by a big margin...Tell me what did he do which would prevent him to continue living in London there are no real basis for this petty sh*t

I have absolutely no idea what information the UK government have which is informing their decision to delay giving him a visa. I very much hope there is no information, and that a visa will be granted shortly. What I'm not going to do though is claim its some big scandal or discrimination without having any of the facts. Much as he's done wonders for the club, its undeniable that Roman and Putin are extremely close. Their relationship has been described as 'like that between a father and a favorite son'. With that in mind, we'd probably be wise to wait and see what happens before claiming foul play.

Obviously I have no information either but I don't trust the governments with these things at all.

Honestly do you imagine something like this happening to any billionaire that didn't have a relation with Putin and that isn't Russian? Like any other club owner in the UK?
It's all politics and I'm sure that Chelsea's owner has nothing to do with the ex-spy killing, they should stick to politics and not mixed it with sports this is just being a bully towards Roman from my point of view and I would be very upset if it results in no investment of £500m for a new stadium, I heard stories from the media claiming that because of that ex-spy's death that England should boycott the World Cup in Russia and IMO it's just ridiculous...

Sorry, I meant to phrase it as a question as to his rights of ownership. Whether he wants to is a different thing altogether.

It’s not the end. The government are just playing stupid childish games to try and prove a point to Russia which I’m pretty sure they don’t give a sh*t about.

If it looks like they may lose the £1bil investment in the stadium the visa will be approved straight away.

Was wondering how long it would take the media to link Roman to Putin. It is Fake News because Roman would have been applying for a Tier 1 (Investor) Visa as he is investing over £2m into the UK economy. After a couple of years, he qualifies for an indefinite leave to remain.

I am not certain he still requires a visa after investing in the UK for over 10yrs.

The ex spy didn’t die and is now apparently out of hospital.

We should keep the politics out of it though. I've been a Chelsea fan for coming up on 40 years, yet if Abramovich has done something harmful to my country then I'm absolutely fine with having him kicked out the country and for us to go back to being a club in the bottom half of the table/fighting relegation each year if necessary. Putin tried to fecking murder someone and put completely innocent people in Salisbury at risk with a toxic agent. That's more important than anything sport related.

There's actually no proof of this yet. I am not a Putin defender, but it's really not been proven so it's all speculation. I wouldn't trust any government, even our own, as far as I could throw them tbh. I don't believe what Russia say, nor do I fully believe what the UK government say. All of them hide behind lies. The US and UK have reason to use a nerve agent and place blame on Russia because Russia have always been labelled the "bad guys" in the West.  Who knows who is culpable, it's just a big blame game.

And how about Litvinenko? Do we think that was the UK too? Let's be serious, the Russian government have been murdering dissidents both in Russia and abroad for many years now.

I do agree that we shouldn't just blindly trust the UK government by the way, but let's not fall into the trap of thinking the two are equivilent.

As for Roman, I've never seen anything that suggests he's done anything wrong in the UK, but considering the financial dealings Russia have in London, its just probably wise to sit back and see what happens. Obviously I want him to be completely exonerated, he's done incredible things for my club and I'm grateful for them.

The thing that makes me laugh is that our government easily allows foreign investors from China and Middle East, yet because it's Russia the money is "dirty" lol. I think if you delved deeper into many of these foreign investors the money is most likely dirty.
