September 3, 20223 yr OK tin hat on, camo paint done, spare magazines tucked in the Bergen and zeroed my SA80 sights on Hazardous Voice. I thought Pulisic was nowhere near as bad today as he is being painted. In fact at times he was ...... good. Made the byline early doors and put in an excellent dangerous cross, but as it was under Sarri, so it was today, we had nobody attacking the box. He wanted possession, he didn't hide, he got behind them three times, showed for the ball every time, was generally positive and ran with the ball. But, both himself and Sterling had no one to aim for. We had no centre-forward. We didn't commit numbers forward from midfield, (Sarri invented that people), and therefore it made it Soooo much harder for him and Raheem to be providers. It was hobbits trying to play in hobbits. Broja came on late in the game and made a difference straight away. Physical, strong. He looked like what we didn't have. A striker. So we now have, (if selected by TT), two proper strikers to call upon. Auba and Broja. If TT uses them it will benefit Sterling, Havertz, Mount and, yes, Pulisic as they will have proper strikers to service. I am probably the only person apart from USA Tim who is glad Puli is still here.

September 3, 20223 yr Did as much as Sterling today, given they had no help from our inept midfield and were suffocated by Moyes defensive tactics.

Except that Sterling took on and dribbled spammer’s defenders continuously and Pulisic was mostly ghosting the game. The one is a class or two above Pulisic.

TT selection today was very strange. Auba can't be fit soon enough.

Sterling 3 successful dribbles. Pulisic 1. But, Pulisic 2 key passes, Sterling 0. Shots Pulisic 1, Sterling 0. Dispossesed 2 each. Poor control Sterling 3, Pulisic 0. Crosses Pulisic,1, Sterling 2. What does all that translate too? As with all statistics, not much really because neither player had a recognised striker to service or ease their work load. BUT, (again with the BUT), the point I'm making is Pulisic was a positive force despite little support, or a recognised target to aim for, and very slow build up play behind him. They both tried but had a ponderous midfield, poor displays from both wingbacks offensively, and no striker. They were set up to fail.

Poor control Pulisic: 0 ?? I remember him fanning around in the box when we desperately needed a goal twice at least due his poor choices of how to control the ball. anyway, not a big fan of him but certainly it‘s not helping him that the team is still finding its form as a whole.

Only quoting the stats there weetee. I would guess one of the times you are thinking of was the interchange of passes on the edge West Ham's box with Sterling in the first half? Pulisic made a smart run round the back but Sterling played the return ball short and behind Pulisic, who tried to pull it (flick it really) back in front of him to get the shot off, but Soufal came across and put the ball out for the corner. All game long Pulisic was offering himself and making those types of runs. Werner used to get praised from many on here for doing less than Pulisic yesterday.

I know you don’t like stats and don’t trust them, so your playing dirty here. Whatever the stats say, as soon as Sterling got the ball he had 2-3 players on him. When it was Pulisic, no one bothered to cover him closely. That would explain the little he had to dribble, the higher number of crosses, shots and key passes., which are really low for a forward with hardly any pressure from the defenders. Any more stats?

I don‘t know. Yes, he wasn‘t as bad as the game before - which isn’t difficult since that was an abysmal performance- but in the end I don‘t think he‘s involved in creating threatening situations. Werner made those runs and at least at 30-50% got a shot at the goal - even if it resulted in a meme or he‘s been 5cm offside. Which Puli I don‘t even see that happening. His decision making remains highly questionable for me. If he can keep his morale up I guess he‘s a decent sub for Sterling but that’s it. If the whole team finally clicks together and hits form I can imagine him being more of on asset but right now he looks lost snd he‘s not someone to bring structure to our play.
September 4, 20223 yr Obviously we don't know the nuances of the tactics, but the starting selection in my book had Pulisic and Sterling playing UP FRONT, with Gallagher behind them, and width coming from the wing backs. If they want to go and play in the channels and put balls into the place where they are supposed to be playing then that all seems a bit crazy to me but hey ho. I don't know why TT keeps playing Sterling down the middle when he has Broja ; Raheem should be playing left wing in my book. Pulisic however should not be playing at all ! He's supposed to be a winger and yet he can't beat anyone, and he definitely cannot cross, so what's the point ?

I'm really not sure how an attacking player that didn't look like scoring, didn't create a chance, didn't drive the team forward or really have any impact on the game in a game we had 70+% possession can be called a positive force. Ineffective would be a better way of describing his performance. Fabianski barely had to move during the 60 minutes Pulisic was on the pitch, we offered nothing offensively. He wasn't as shockingly bad as he was against Southampton but the reality is there's nothing Pulisic does on the pitch that helps his team score goals, create chances or win football matches. We haven't even scored a goal this season while Pulisic has been on the pitch and he's played 160 minutes + Injury time. Our chance creation metrics take a nose dive when he's playing and I don't think that's a coincidence. There's really no reason Pulisic should be getting minutes for us. I think most would agree Broja should have started this game alongside Sterling, he had a much better cameo against Southampon and when he came on yesterday he provided much more intensity and actually looked like he wanted to help the team score goals. Some may even say he was a positive force when he came on.

Tuchel is just trying to see if anything will work, last time he had Ziyech in the startling lineup, now Pulisic. And in the end of it all, his tactic depends on the full-backs winning matches for us which was once again proven true due to Chilwell.

Players like Pulisic are dependent on a central striker playing ahead of them. One he can look to pick out, or that occupies defenders so he can have space to dribble into and create something. Thats when we see most of our attacking mids at their best. By putting him upfront against big defenders isnt his game, hes essentially a winger. We also have to bear in mind its his first start and essentially he will need more time to hit any sort of form. Players arent robots and people on here are too quick to judge. If we are losing and hes brought on for the last 10 minutes, we cant keep throwing a hissy fit because we lost and he didnt produce a miracle, so hes the reason we did, we need to be fair and realistic. Let Auba and Broja start a few games as central striker, and wstch our wingers flourish more. With the amount of games coming up now and Pulisic will undoubtedly start more, dont be suprised if he starts having a big impact. Edited September 4, 20223 yr by Oli

I think that’s a stretch, Sterling was easily better on the day. Multiple runs, 2 excellent teasing balls into the box for Havertz and Mount, and he had some excellent hold up play. Pulisic had one good cross and that was it. My man can’t even dribble anymore. Not surprised a market didn’t develop for him. Maybe he can help in some cup ties, but I don’t see how he gets on the pitch regularly at all this season.

Can anyone recall Pulisic getting on the end of a through ball in his time here? Would love to see him do that, use the pace you have and get into space.
