It does however mean we need a DOF in order to set that direction and also to decide if Sarri is the man whose "vision" is the route we want to take. This doesnt mean we cant have tweaks etc to a formation but the scatter gun approach to signings has to end and if it means a few years of cup runs and top fours in order to get the house in order then I can live with it. Exactly. Thank you for articulating this.
May 1, 20197 yr I don't see the DOF as a young man yet more an older man that is cognizant of a number of footballing systems and the players needed to make them work. That way if the manager starts to go off-piste with his proposed acquisitions the DOF would be in a position to challenge him. The problem for me is I can't see examples of who would be qualified to take that role.

That person should also have connections and contacts throughout the football world so he can be alerted to emerging talents and be able to secure their transfer over other teams.

That would be ideal though not sure if that works in practise. Mourinho seems to have made better acquisitions since 2014 than either Conte or Sarri, IMO. He got Matic, Fabregas and Costa all who played many games.

Likely that Emenalo helped facilitate these, but also that Chelsea and Mourinho then were a more attractive draw than Chelsea and Sarri now.

Well you would certainly expect him to back up Mourinho in buying players to take us back to the top yet it makes you wonder about the acumen of Conte and Sarri in not getting players that fitted in.

I think Sarri and Conte have been victims of a board that has taken control of transfers from the coach/manager position. Conte certainly made it clear that he was looking for players to be brought in in the summer and winter windows last year, and was left frustrated that he essentially got Zappacosta, Morata, and Drinkwater. Sarri wanted Jorghino and Higuaín, and got both, eventually. Higuaín has not worked out, and at least it was a low risk loan move. But Sarri isn't getting any more credibility for future player requests when the guy he handpicked to solve our goal scoring issues hasn't delivered.

That summer we got Morata was a strange one, Utd got Lukaku and Mourinho never seemed a fan of his when he was at Chelsea. My impression was the Euro clubs just were not selling their talent unless we broke the bank. We were not prepared to overspend for a player and this might be the financial reigns being pulled in too by Marina on the instructions of RA. Perhaps if Emenalo had still been there it would have been different yet another consideration was Conte initially was playing 4 at the back so if we had invested would he have asked for the wrong players considering he later changed system.
May 3, 20197 yr We cannot let Arsenal win the EL Dream scenario: finish 4th and win the EL vs Arsenal in the final (dont see Valencia coming back from 3-1 down) Would make up for the disappointments this season. And send those c**ts back to the EL for next season ? Edited May 3, 20197 yr by zes
May 4, 20197 yr Third is now possible. This should hopefully give the players a boost to achieve this
May 4, 20197 yr I knew Spurs would bottle it enough to open the door. Now we just need to take the opportunity.
May 4, 20197 yr Battle of the bottlers is what the race for top 4 should be called this season. If Tottenham end up finishing out of the top 4, then that is surely the most Spursy thing that has happened to them. They weren't even in a top 4 battle a few months ago. People were talking about them being up there with City and Liverpool, now they are over 20 points behind

May 5, 20197 yr Author So if Arsenal win their last two games against Brighton-home and Burnley-away by +5 goal difference, then we have to beat Leicester for top 4. Unless Spuds lose at home to Everton. Imagine this Ars 3 Brighton 0 ...then next week after Burnley 0 Ars 2 ,,,Leciester 1 Chels 1.....and spuds 1 everton 1...it would finish ars-3rd, chelsea-4th and spuds-5th
May 5, 20197 yr Author well done Sarri in your first season. now we can rest players for the final European games.
