The State of Our Squad

Featured Replies

So I got bored and did a chart...
Most of them are to the point, I've selected a few relevant players on loan to make up the numbers.
I also want to add the difference between "Deadwood" and "Sell"
Deadwood - Players that play an active role in our squad that need to be replaced
Sell - Players either on loan to us, on loan somewhere else or players that never play that need to be sold.

I think you could include RLC and Kepa in the "haven't reached their prime yet" group but they are definitely quality players. I also think Kovacic is a decent squad player if he is used as rotation for Jorginho but doesn't offer much more than that. Other than that, I don't think I have much of an issue with this assessment.

Who are the following players?

Deadwood - between Bakayoko & Batshuyi?

Potential - between CHO & Reece James?

It's an interesting exercise, but in all seriousness this doesn't matter until we know what the outcome of our transfer ban appeal is.  Tomorrow is 3 weeks since the appeal hearing and I continue to believe that there must be some consideration of our position being taken, otherwise it would have been quick and easy to deny our appeal if nothing had changed.

There will be several players we may want to clear out now that might have to stay if we can't buy players for the next window or two.

The thought of keeping players like Zappercosta, Drinkwater, Pedro and Willian 'cos we can't sign anyone fills me with dread. Would rather we still got shot of them and show faith in some youth.

Wouldn't mind if we kept one preferably Willian

The state of the squad indeed...not the way we want things to look with impending ban. Although not really sure of the distinction between "deadwood" and "sell". Think they could be categorized as 14 players we don't need on the books. Either way, we're fcked ?

I'm just tired of us flogging dead horses and would rather see some hungrier, fresher players so would ideally offload both, but if I had to keep one it would be Pedro. Better all-rounder and more end product.

Assuming transfer ban holds.

Keep: Kepa, Big Willy, Bulka, Azpi, James, Da Silva, Emerson, Rudiger, christensen, Zouma, Tomori, Jorginho, Kante, Barkley, RLC, Ampadu, Mount, CHO, Pulisic, Brown, Piazon, Giroud, Abraham, Moses, Batman.

Sell/release: Green, Eduardo, omeruo, Miazga, Kane, Ania, Zappacosta, Alonso, Luiz, Cahill, Rahman, Hector, Kalas, Kovacic, Baka, Baker, Nathan, Pantic, Quintero, Pasalic, Palmer, Musonda, Hazard (he wants to go imo) Willian, Pedro, Kenedy, Morata, Higuain

If by so black magic Hazard stays then swap him and Piazon.

Because of uncertainties re owner and the transfer appeal I also think this exercise is questionable.

Saying that I'll thrown in some points:

  • I think the following should leave and on a free if not marketable - Cahill and Pedro (32!).
  • I think we should be looking to sell the following - Morata, Moses, Batshuyai, Zouma and Kenedy all first team players yet not right for our first team. You chaps mention a of players on loan I know little about except Abraham, Reece, Musonda and Mount, these I think we should keep if the ban is confirmed.
  • Grey areas: Giroud and Azpi. The latter seems to me to struggle at RB, if we don't play 3 CBs he might soon become a liability.

I've left Willian in because I'm assuming Hazard will go and although he might not score as many as Pedro he is rarely played on the left where he is better and his ability to go around a player is good. I see him more as a super sub. Also if we are to rely on youth we will need some old hands to steady the ship at times.

This topic reminds me of the real world as depicted on the PS and XBOX.
