Timo Werner

Featured Replies

He is the comic relief in our team at the moment. A first touch that would make Lukaku blush, and you can be pretty sure if he takes a shot on it will miss the target.

It is clear his confidence is gone. Yes we are not playing to the strengths of his game, does not help, but that makes little difference when he gets clear chances and cannot even work the keeper.

Our attack was so impressive, now it is impotent

Is there any history of strikers having terrible seasons then afterwards they're scoring for fun?

I'm trying to be hopeful. I think it's so silly to write him off considering his age, first season, etc. But when you look at the chances he's missing, and then on top of that the history we have with forwards who lose their confidence? I can't help but be concerned.

I think all of us here can agree with this, when you saw Werner through on goal against Fulham you knew he wasn't scoring that. That's exactly what happened with Morata and Torres, I don't even have faith in him to score chances like that. f**k me...

Aye I smiled, only question was does it go wide? At the keeper? Off the post?

But in the back of the net? Nah, not our Timo the Entertainer. What way can he mess up this chance is the question lol.

The Fulham keeper could have been lying back on a deck chair, off to the side sipping a pina colada and better chance Timo kocks the drink out of his hand than finds the empty net lol.

We need the comic relief though I mean it has been pretty miserable of late on here.

Drogba was pretty average his first season with us.

That's true, but I can't remember him missing sitters like that.

Thierry Henry struggled at the start with Arsenal after being largely ineffective at Juventus.

He missed quite a few big ones in his first season. Not close to as many as Werner's but then again I can't remember anyone missing as much.

And Drogba obviously had great mental strength and confidence. Werner looks borderline depressed at this point.

Morata? I remember he was scoring for fun at the beginning, looked like such a classy elegant striker. Then he’d gone dogsh*t.

No I'm asking if there are any strikers that had a horrible first season but went on to have great goal scoring form after.

I'm hoping the Werner situation isn't already set in stone. It's just rare you see strikers turn it around after such a horrible first impression. I do remember Drogba being underwhelming in his first season but he wasn't as bad as Torres, Morata and Werner were in their first seasons.

Can already see us offering Werner + cash for Haaland.

Giroud will be leaving so we need a new striker, I don't think Timo will be dumped after just one season. Think all parties will want to give it another go, especially if we do get a new coach.

Interesting comments from Ralph Hasenhuttl who has worked with Timo.

Most of the time when I have seen this is because of the reason that the game doesn't fit to him . The team didn't play in the way he can bring his best on the pitch, I think.

He is definitely a player where you have to adapt your game on him. If you do this, he will give you everything you need from a striker.

'But therefore, he has some qualities you really have to focus on. The good thing for him, I think at Leipzig when I was there, is we concentrated completely on his qualities.

'With our quick transitions after winning the ball, it was perfect for our game. Also when he was with Julian [Nagelsmann], he was also scoring a lot of goals”

In some ways, a top leve team and striker should be well balanced and play a number of ways. Also, It’s always been the way that we will have a lot of the ball which probably doesn’t suit his game.

Dont see us building a team around him so either he adapts or he moves on.

Or we hire the Saints gaffa as our new manager lol.

Another proof that it's also Lampard's fault for putting him on the wing and not just him playing bad out of the blue.

Your putting all of the blame on Lampard for his bad form, but soon that excuse will be unavailable, it'll be an experienced manager who you won't be able to blame so easily.

If you read what I said, you'll see that I'm in fact not putting all of the blame on Lampard. Some of the blame yes, I have been doing that in more than one post.

You say 'fault' like he wasn't brought here for his versatility and ability to cover multiple positions on the forward line.

For me his so called versatility ends as soon as he's not scoring goals, meaning that if he isn't scoring goals for his team he isn't playing well. He's like a poacher with pace that will shoot a lot but also score a lot. I didn't expect him to lose so much confidence but I did see him spend 3 games in a row where he ran like crazy up and down the flank only to find nothing and he kept his head up and I thought at the time that was admirable but after all he's only human, as time went on he couldn't simply keep his head up and then suddenly he started to miss clear cut chances, first 2 chances then the next game 3, then 2 and his confidence was all gone pretty soon after that.

What I like most about him is that he's not hiding at all. He did more in 10 minutes than Tammy did the whole match. He movement is very good and I think most of us presume he will come good again and start scoring for fun for us.

However, the problems he's having in front of goal are his and his alone. Lampard can be and is being blamed for most of our problems on here, but Werner has missed sitters after sitters. No matter where you play on the pitch or whatever tactics the manager is using, if you are a striker and miss every easy chance that comes your way, that's on him. All of the chances have been one on ones and sitters, so how is Frank responsible for those in the slightest. Anyway, the fact he is still plugging away game after game, is to be commended. The goals will come.

Would like to see him paired with Giroud in a two, think Olly would offer him plenty of assists.

Don't think it would work unfortunately.

Giroud gets well marked and Werner does not react that well for me.

Only one way to find out for sure 🙂
