I've also seen people say "football careers are short" like they think they go from 100k+ a week to nothing the instant they retire. When these players retire, they will still make more money in a year than we would in 10.I'm somebody from a poor background, so I will never be able to sympathise with a footballer for not taking a pay cut. Doesn't matter what kind of logic people try and throw at me, you can never get me to look at it from that point of view. Just 1% of Chilwell's weekly wage would be life changing for the average person living in the UK. So when I look at somebody in Chilwell's position, refusing to continue a dream job because his generational wealth will be cut to slightly less generational wealth......well, sorry, but I will never have any sympathy for that position.I feel sorry for him being frozen out of the squad and being forced out of the club, but when it comes to money, not a single bit. He’s not refusing to contribute his dream job though? He turns up every day, never moaned once, heads out on loan when the chance is there. If the club want him to leave, they should honour his contract and offer him a payout to match what he would lose from leaving.

But also worth pointing out the statistics of footballs facing bankruptcy after retirement, due in part to terrible financial advice. "An estimated 40% of professional footballers go bankrupt within five years of retirement, and many more struggle financially, according to Xpro." Didnt Kerry Dixon also go throug hthe same and the game paid a lot less back then. I would simply say Chilwell is continuing his dream job being with us and he has a contract with us the club offered him.

By not forcing his way out of the club, when he knows his chances of playing here have been dead for a long time now, he's basically destroyed his chances of making it back to the top level. If Chilwell just wants to see out the rest of his contract, that's fine, he is perfectly entitled to do so.
August 28, 2025Aug 28 Anyway...... Chilly B was one of my favourite players at Chelsea. A class act. Agree with everyone who has said he was cast aside way too soon by our Phenomenal Sporting Director's and owners.

Either way, it's a ridiculous waste of his talent. This is the same manager who said that Sancho fit his system better than Sterling. Or pick Disasi over Chalobah. Jackson was our starting st last season and now he is a goner. When have you seen that before? The reality is Maresca is just a HC and his job is to train his player. He has very little say in the make up of the squad.

August 29, 2025Aug 29 If he chooses to put money before playing time and career pride - then that's his prerogative. Lovely story to tell the grandchildren....
August 29, 2025Aug 29 This idea of player should take lower salary to benefit their old club make 0 sense. Why would you do that? You are basically a cast off and they want you gone but they also want to sell you. If a team is desperate to kick you out from their team, it is simple the team should buy out his contract. August 29, 2025Aug 29 Chilwell has stayed fit and made himself available for selection. The club, for whatever reason, decides not to select him. The club have imposed restrictions on him by deciding they will only sell if they can recoup a portion of his transfer fee.Legally, and ethically, he's fulfilled his end of the bargain when it comes to his contract.

Rotting in the reserves is a waste of a career.

Why are you making up rubbish? Stop making up sh*t. Nobody is saying he is a bad person, or a bad player. Simply saying that for the sake of his career, he should accept a lower salary and move to a new club where he will play regularly. Its ok if he prefers the extra money over playing time. Thats up to him. Its a waste of a career, and hardly something to be proud of....but nobody says it makes him bad.

August 29, 2025Aug 29 I was wondering who was going to replace Nico as the subject matter for our principal attention seeking poster. Looks like Chilly is in the mix LOL

It's the club's fault he isn't playing and it's the club refusing to transfer him because it's trying to regain money it isn't owed.

I agree. …good for him if he prefers chasing money over chasing career highlights, games and professional pride. I am sure that as a multi millionaire he will sleep soundly, and the prospect of an extra few millions can comfort him for losing all these years of his career….

They simply dont think in that manner. They will when they are older however and it comes out in the wash how grandpa choose money over professional pride.

They'll probably grow up resenting Chelsea rather than judging their Grandpa. What a bizarre conversation we're all having.
August 29, 2025Aug 29 As things stand Chilwell looks like he is going to be reintegrated into the squad. So... Would look like his decision to be a professional and "honour" the contract the club gave him (the owners when buying) is being vindicated not to leave and force his way back into squad contention. I'd say that's an even better story to tell the grandkids about sticking to your guns, doing what is right and being right about his own talent not to go to a lesser club. Perhaps Im just seeing this all wrong. Jeepers, on that note time to get some ice cream.
August 29, 2025Aug 29 Discussing a player's finances is one of the biggest waste of time arguments. We don't know what goes on in their life. Stop pretending you do.

I hope he is reintegrated and can contribute in a meaningful way. If this happens, then I fear it will likely be 15 mins against lower league oppo in the carabao cup (think he played against Barrow last year?) rather than a sustained run.If I were a betting man, I would gamble it is likely to be another wasted year of his short career, with minimal game time. In the event that he is reintegrated, how about we have a new thread to generate some money for the forum (much like we did last year with Wacko). I will give £10 for every game Chilly starts for us, and £2 for every game he comes on as sub. You give £1 for every game he doesnt feature. Are you confident enough to put your money where your mouth is?
