Welcome to Chelsea Ben Chilwell

Featured Replies

Again, he's not in the conference squad.

He played in one of the two games he was ever likely to play.

If he's fit in January he might play morecombe

Not particularly that bothered tbh, get rid. He's been absolute pants for years and he's usually only available 1/2 of the season due to injuries.

Not worth the wage bill, agree with Maresca on this one.

Lets not get silly, his not pants, you could copy and paste your comment to the Reece James thread then. Chilwell is easily the best left back at the club, it's just down to who the manager fancies and I am guessing the board want rid of his wages also. Manager doesn't fancy Nkunku either who I would personally put above many players in an attacking sense and I am pretty sure when sold will score plenty for his new club.

I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I watched him have a decent game, I can remember with James. He's usually back and up to speed, the quality is there. Chilwell? He was dire whenever he played last season for club and country.

Truth be told I think we should be looking at moving both him and James if we can, that's just my opinion. But I wouldn't put Chilwell on the same pedestal as James at all.

There's two crucial differences when it comes to James and Chilwell.

James still performs when he plays (he won us the game vs Newcastle with his headed interception) and he's a fit for the 3 at the back system at RCB and in time would probably be quite decent inverting aswell given he played midfield at Wigan.

It's hard to imagine even prime Chilwell in the left side of the back 3 or inverting into midfield. That being said I would have seen the arguments for adapting the system for the 2021 version, this version I'm not even comfortable seeing in a standard LB role.

Cucurella is twice the player Chilwell is.

What a performance from Ben.

This is why he left Leicester and signed for Chelsea!

I think Chilwell has been a fantastic signing for us and we finally have a complete LB since A.Cole left.

Thank god the club listened to Lamps here and paid the money for Chilwell instead of going for a fancy name like Telles who can't get in the team over Shaw or Reguillon who can't defend for sh*t.

I think we should all remember what a great player he is, I really don't understand some of the recent comments about the bloke

Completely agree. As a pure footballer, he's twice the player Cucurella is.

Similar to the weird revisionism around Mendy. Comfortably the best keeper we've had since Courtois.

Mendy broke Liverpool's hearts in the Final, Liverpool must have been delighted to see him taken off for Kepa for the penalty shootout, absolutely devastating for Mendy to have watch Kepa f**k it all up after his outstanding display.

Chilwell was better at his peak, much better defensively and attacking.

Doesn't fit the system though can't play in a back 3 and inverting him is  a complete waste.

Hes only at his best in a wingback role (like what United have with ruben)

Unfortunately I can see him getting moved on

Hi, I don't really know if he can or can't play in certain systems, you may be correct, but my observation were really to answer comments that he was "dire" or "pants", when clearly he has been an excellent Chelsea player..

Never mind, onto Sunday praying that we take advantage of today's results. Cheers.

Come on you BLUES!

Knowing how good he was in 2021 and also that he's not the answer in late 2024 can coexist.

Hi Argo..

Absolutely. Doesn't mean that he's not a very good player though as some on here have posted. Cheers

Yep with Argo on this.

I think most remember how great he was, I do. But no one knows how great he is now, I'm sry mate, but not even you bud (unless you've seen some secret footage we haven't seen...lol). You dating someone from there that's leaking info? She hot? She got a sister? Move that discussion to pm, but carrying on...lol

The tactics have moved on a bit from then and all our lot according to the manager are "versatile", thats the keyword and i sort of get it.

Personally if we didn't have any left wingers I'd be pissy if maresca didn't try him there as I think he can make a case for himself but as LBs go, it's cucu then veiga on the bench. Veiga is not as good as chilly at LB but he's more versatile than chilly. That word again, lol

But like everyone else that says why isn't this guy playing or on the team sheet at least. We can only have x number of players on the pitch and y on the bench.

The ones on the bench need to be a mix of versatile players unless he has a crystal ball and knows exactly who's going to get injured, sent off, etc or who's needed for a change in tactics.

If Chilly is indeed not able to invert, understand the tactics, or keep up* then I'm sorry mate, he shouldn't even be on the bench like maresca said at the start of the season.

*that's my theory. I think with injury and age, he's slowing down and maybe one of the many reasons his time at the club is limited, along with wages, age, etc...

Age, wage and his injury record are probably the major issues especially with Cucu costing £62 million and being first choice.

He was brilliant for us but does anyone see a role in Maresca’s system where Chilwell gets regular football? That sh*t happens to better players than him.

I hope he gets himself a good club because he deserves to play. It will be interesting to see his level wherever he ends up but it’s certain not to be at Chelsea.
Cheers for the memories Ben

Left winger maybe, but unfortunately there's quite a few infront of him and no idea what he's like as a second 10 (pockets) or if he has a right foot that can shoot.

It's that word again... versatile!

But ditto...very interested to see his current fitness levels and hope he's happy wherever he ends up.

I don’t buy the excuse that he is a system player and can’t adapt.

He played LB for Leicester in a flat 4 - and did it brilliantly enough that we wanted to buy him.

He then came to us, and played brilliantly in an 5 - enough that he was 1 half of the best wing back pairing the EPL had seen - winning the UCL in the process.

He can defend. He can attack. He can overlap. He can hang back. He can assist. He can shoot.

The unknown is - can he invert into the centre - but think we are over exaggerating this - it isn’t rocket science, and I am fairly sure a player of the calibre of Chilly can understand the instruction of when to (and when to not) step forward and go central.

The bigger issue is can he stay fit - but this seems irrelevant given that Clearlake seem to have made their mind up that they want him off the wage books.

If you're having to go back to 2021 to find nice comments about him singing his praises, it might tell you something no?

Nobody is denying he was good during that period, the problem was it was almost 4 years ago and his career has taken a massive cliff dive since then.

That doesn't mean fans should now talk disparagingly about it, I think it's a disgrace how quickly put fans turn on a player that gave his all yet has seen a downturn due to unfortunate injuries.

It's not turning on him it's just facing reality.

I've got nothing against Chilwell, he was fantastic for us at the beginning and proved a lot of doubters wrong at the time. But he's not been the same player for years, for club and country. I think it's evident he's massively declined since the injuries have taken hold. I'm not saying it's his fault, it's very unfortunate, but it is what it is. You don't keep players around who haven't put in a good string of performances in years, injury or no injury, that's still a big problem.

I think there's a good reason Maresca wants rid of him, I doubt it's anything personal.

Negative. Limited system player that Maresca has found a role for in his current system. Lets not pretend Cucurella is some incredible athlete all of a sudden.
