Welcome to Chelsea Ben Chilwell

1) I highly doubt Chilwell is happy to stay another 2 years without playing football, especially not when England has a shortage of LB's at the moment and there's an upcoming world cup.

2) The settlement fee there is around what they would get, if not more, if they just loaned him out. We are paying his wages regardless, might as well try and get some loan fees out of it with the upside of potentially getting more interest at top clubs and him more willing to leave.

This whole situation has been badly mismanaged.

But who is in for him ? No-one by the sound of it .... not even on loan ...

People keep offering up Manchester United as a club that ought to want him, but they already have their own chronically injured England left back on a big contract .. so why would they want to double down on that ? And if not them, who else ?

I'm not sure what the club can do to offload him if they are holding out for a fee, either for straight sale or loan. His wages are £200K a week until June 2027. He has had significant injury problems, (only played 7,385 minutes in the best part of 5 seasons), accompanied by a downturn in form by any data analytics or eye test you care to do, and all that may or may not continue. All adds up to a big risk for any club thinking about taking him on. Hence why he is still here after nearly two full windows of us trying to move him on ...

Agreed. Ultimately the owners offered him a big contract extension despite his injury record and that was a risky approach. If there are no takers it would surely be better to try and re-integrate him with the squad.

Was a really odd move given how quick they were to identify Mount's decline.

And it's not like he was running out of contract either, baffling.

Are you sure about this? If he wasn’t happy he could agree to mutually terminate his contract and walk away from a £30m contract. Willian walked away from his Arsenal contract when Arteta iced him.

Everton want him but our lot are being funny with terminating Broja’s loan deal.

It's quite rare for that to happen regardless of how unhappy a player is so I wouldn't hold that against Chilwell. There's usually some sort of compensation.

I find it hard to believe no club in the top 5 leagues would be interested in Chilwell. Even before his injury he wasn't that bad. My guess is they want too much in return, which has been a recurring theme for most of our loans under these lot.

Yes I imagine this is the case. Probably a combination of asking too high a loan fee and not offering to cover a high enough percentage of his wages.

Also a bit daft not to have at least had him in the shop window for a few appearances to prove his fitness.

That is the baffling part. You are more likely to get clubs interested in a player you don’t blacklist, and not overprice in the market. You can’t want a player out, and demand premium prices. Market just doesn’t work that way.

Such a waste of talent by Maresca, full credit to Chilly as well as a lot of players *cough* Sterling *cough* would’ve had plenty of leaks to the tabloids but he’s kept quiet and kept professional.

Such a shocking business model to openly banish a player and still expect other clubs to stump up a fee.

What's the plan on their end? For him to be backup to Tyrick Mitchell?

Yeah, it is a bit of a strange one. You would imagine Chilwell would go knowing he is going to play. I am thinking maybe Mitchell will play LCB more often and Chilwell on the LWB maybe. Especially as Chalobah has gone. Guehi will move over to the right and Mitchell maybe take up Guehi's role on the left CB.

I don’t think Chilwell will ever get a look in under Maresca - no changing his mind there. Poor way to treat Ben, albeit he hasn’t really done much the last 3 years due to injury.

Chilwell and Viega both leaving though - what happens if Cucurella goes down next game.

Under this ownership more like. They want him gone and Maresca will do as he is told.
