I agree with Marseca on this one, have to have an honest conversation about Chilwell, he's not been good for years. He's also terribly injury-prone which makes him extremely unreliable.

Not a big Cucu fan either that's why I think the LB position has to be addressed but Chilwell needs to go.

I'm surprised we weren't in for Calafiori ... but maybe he only wanted Arsenal ? Silly boy in that case LOL

There's still time to grab someone maybe? Was going to ask if Wiley is any good but I've just saw that he's gone on loan.

I definitely don't want to go with Cucu for another season, but even if you keep Chilwell around you've got that anyway because the bloke can only play 20% of the season.

Suspect they'll need to ship Chilly out first before contemplating a replacement.

Wiley I imagine is the latest of a lengthening line of S&W punts that won't make the grade.

Strange thing to say but he’s been injured or terrible for the guts of three years.  Cucurella been terrible too but he has a bit of form from the euros

The Shed End: Clownlake putting Chilwell on £180k a week?! Clueless! He's rubbish!

Also The Shed End: Chilwell is brilliant, clownlake are forcing him out! Clueless!

The Shed End: Clownlake make all of the signings without the manager having any say it's disgraceful! The manager should have the players he wants!

Also The Shed End: Maresca can't find a place for Chilwell?! He's limited as a coach! Gone be Xmas!

You guys are hilarious 😂

Almost like people have different opinions.

Chilwell was on £190K when he was originally signed by Marina. This was considerably higher than he was on at Leicester (£65K a week)

BlueCo raised that to £200K when they extended his contract (presumably to avoid what happened with Rudiger and Christensen, running their contracts down and leaving for nothing). Granted it was a small increase, but that was probably necessary to get Chilwell to sign the contract extension.

So for me, BlueCo have acted prudently with Chilwell. I think he is well overpaid, but I'd have to lay that one at the door of the previous regime.

You're right. After looking back his initial wages were roughly 180kpw

And all he did was win us the f**king Champions' League.

Chilwell is a seriously good player and his alternative at left-back is a f**king moron. How about we start him and try to bin off Cucurella while his stock is high?

The club is run by honest-to-God idiots.

Three years and a big injury ago, that's a hell of a long time in football.

In three years Sterling went from scoring a bucketload and being one of the star men for a 99 point City team to the version we can't stop complaining about.

Torres went from one of the best strikers in the league to one of the worst in even less time.

So we're looking to sell Chilwell......why did we sell Maatsen exactly? I get it, pure profit, but aren't we covered in that area with all of the other players we are looking to sell?

We just seem to be making it up as we go along.

All he needs is to be is better than Cucurella. Basic competence is all I ask for.

To sweeten up Villa so we could sign Kellyman, obviously

Maatsen's on the bench for Villa today, so he hasn't even displaced Lucas Digne at this point ... 🙂

Quite a common thing for managers to not start a new signing straight away. Often let them bide their time before putting them in the team. Zinchenko started over Calafiori for instance.

If Maresca doesn't fancy Chilwell's skill set as his type of left back, to invert or play LCB, then surely Maatsen would have had absolutely no chance ...  it's pointless pining for Maatsen just because Maresca has decided he doesn't rate Chilly.

I am not disputing that. I was responding to you having a dig at him for not getting ahead of Digne for today's game. I have not commented at all on Maatsen suiting Maresca's style, but just think it was unfair you having a dig at him because he was on the bench when I am merely pointing out this is a common thing.

A lot of the arguments I’ve read for getting rid of Chilwell, mainly around his injuries and lack of availability very much apply to James too. Yet you don’t read so much about getting shot of him due to his clogging up the physio room.

James is a step or 2 above Chillwell when fit and firing though, but if he’s injured again constantly this season I suspect most won’t disagree with getting rid of him either

BIB: you do but I digress.

It's a moot comparison anyway as James as annoying as his injuries are when he does play he usually hits top gear again almost immediately (as we saw vs Forest in his last return and Spurs/City in the one before that). Chilwell by comparison looks on a Dele Alli/Fernando Torres esque drop, that's the difference.

That’s fair, although getting himself suspended on his return might have slightly marred the level of his performances. He really does need to go a season without significant injury though.

And Cucurella by comparison has only looked good for an extremely short period of time in a system that totally negates the need to defend properly by actually being calm enough at holding a set position under pressure and marking an opponent.
