August 16, 20241 yr Those comments from Maresca are insane if we haven’t got anything on the table or even any genuine suitors. Insane.
August 17, 20241 yr Ridiculous comments. So what is he going to do, rely on Cucurella who is a disaster defensively? What if that doesn't work or he get's injured? The guy doesn't have a plan B. I never want to see Colwill at LB again, and Gusto will be needed at RB (especially if James can't stay fit) and I don't think he is anywhere near as good at LB compared to RB. I knew it was going to be a uphill struggle for Chilwell once we started to play with inverted full backs, but the manager basically telling him to leave when he has only one real option at LB is stupid. Especially when that LB is so unreliable. We seem determined to sabotage any chance of progress under this ownership.

But he played a total of zero minutes there for Basel last season and has only played there 4 times in his senior career. I highly doubt he would even be considered as a real option if Cucurella got injured or was playing so badly that he had to be dropped.

I feel it has been subtly communicated to both him & Sterling that they need to find a club, just find it weird they were both taken on the US tour. I feel the club has been trying to avoid the media backlash that comes with giving them the heavy handed approach they are using with Chalobah & Gallagher. His silence is saying everything because I think he wants to be paid to leave, Sterling’s approach has been to release statements every week saying he is committed and happy which is essentially saying pay me off to leave also.
August 17, 20241 yr Can someone tell these people that screaming out loud "we don't rate this player, we think he's useless" is really not a good sales strategy?
August 17, 20241 yr 5 hours ago, just said: Another 3 months and Maresca will probably be getting the same message. I might be at a table for one here, but I still feel a fit Chilwell is the best left back we have by miles. And he's still only 27. Agree....
August 17, 20241 yr Maresca is just relaying what the owners want to say, I don't think he actually get much of a say in whom to keep. Cucu had a good Euro and some good games leading up to it, but let's not forget how much he did struggle, not saying he would go back to the guy from 12 months ago, but he's yet to prove he will work under the new system. I guess the choices are Cucu and Gusto, but with James out, Gusto will play on the other side.

City have only Walker as their recognised fullback, and Arteta doesn’t want Tierney is only traditional fullback.
August 17, 20241 yr Is Maresca that limited as a coach that he can’t find NO use for Chilwell? Get on the training pitch and work on him.

But there's 42 others to work on too...lol I think he's cutting his losses and trying to just concentrate on his 25 odd players atm. He can't possibly work with each one of the 43+ players we have. Also he played veiga as LB in the inter match at some point and he didn't look bad tbh. Not seen much of him there yet but I recall a few good tackles and intercepts including one on dumfries. He's probably thinking of him as back up to Cucurella.
August 17, 20241 yr The Shed End: Clownlake putting Chilwell on £180k a week?! Clueless! He's rubbish! Also The Shed End: Chilwell is brilliant, clownlake are forcing him out! Clueless! The Shed End: Clownlake make all of the signings without the manager having any say it's disgraceful! The manager should have the players he wants! Also The Shed End: Maresca can't find a place for Chilwell?! He's limited as a coach! Gone be Xmas! You guys are hilarious 😂

A big unit with pace. I have hopes for him.

You guys are hilarious 😂 Chilwell was on £190K when he was originally signed by Marina. This was considerably higher than he was on at Leicester (£65K a week) BlueCo raised that to £200K when they extended his contract (presumably to avoid what happened with Rudiger and Christensen, running their contracts down and leaving for nothing). Granted it was a small increase, but that was probably necessary to get Chilwell to sign the contract extension. So for me, BlueCo have acted prudently with Chilwell. I think he is well overpaid, but I'd have to lay that one at the door of the previous regime. Edited August 17, 20241 yr by Sexyfootball
August 17, 20241 yr I have to admit, my only real issue with this is how publically Maresca has done it. Does nothing to strengthen our negotiations with clubs and does nothing for the player if we end up not being able to sell him. I think he’s been a good player for us and deserves better than that. But as mentioned above, we are going to have to be cut throat with decisions over the next 2 weeks. I don’t agree with the sentiment that we should find a way to bring Chilwell into the side. I wonder if Bayern ends up being an option considering Davies is supposedly running down his deal

Clearlake were the ones that gave him & James ridiculous contracts. The real issue is giving a player an improved contract and a year after he is surplus to requirements. 24 minutes ago, Niall1905 said: I have to admit, my only real issue with this is how publically Maresca has done it. Maresca’s words were along the lines of he needs to go and get mins, which alludes to going out on loan.

All the usual sources (capology, spotrac, salarysport etc) had him on 190 ... where are you getting 150 from ? I stand by my guns that the £10K increase on Chilwell is a reasonable carrot to get him to sign an extension ; being surplus to requirements was probably not the case at the time it was offered, plus £10K a week extra to protect a £30-40m hit on a potential transfer fee if he left for nothing seems sensible to me. Agree with you on Reece James, which was way too generous an increase.
August 17, 20241 yr Before we flog him, can the SD’s actually make sure that the inverted full back works and Marsceca is an elite coach? Otherwise we’ll be signing another left back next season.

I do think we’d need to play with Conte/Tuchel like wingbacks for him to be really effective, which it seems we have moved thoroughly away from. They’re probably making the right call here Edited August 17, 20241 yr by AndyDowsleftflank
August 17, 20241 yr Feel a bit sorry for Chilwell because if it wasn't for his injury record I still think there would be place for him. Regardless of Marescas comments. I can't see there being much interest because of his wages.

Media links tend not to disappear, so I'd expect to find more mentions of 150 if that was the figure ...

Would put Gusto as a LB before him.
August 17, 20241 yr I agree with Marseca on this one, have to have an honest conversation about Chilwell, he's not been good for years. He's also terribly injury-prone which makes him extremely unreliable. Not a big Cucu fan either that's why I think the LB position has to be addressed but Chilwell needs to go.
August 17, 20241 yr I swear some of the outrage I see is fake. Chilly being sold has been a talking point for ages. Maresca making this public will only look very bad if there aren’t already potential suitors. 8 minutes ago, Argo said: 2021 Chilwell? Sure. The version we've had since the injury? ACL ruined him.
