Agent and intermediary fees are to be included in a player's costs. Player cost is the transfer fee, wages and associated costs. Any fees, signing-on bonus etc. paid to player or agent are part of the new amortisation calculation.

When a new contract is signed, the amortisation is re-calculated at that date.

So assuming a £45m fee and £200k/wk wages (£10.4m/year), his amortised cost is ~£20m a season. With two years left Chilwell's book value will be around £40m meaning we will need at least that if we want to break-even for PSR purposes.

When you calculate the sum to be depreciated ( amortisation) you don’t include the players wages that appears elsewhere in the accounts.

If you think about we have a charge of circa £200 million if your calculations were right Chillwell would account for 10% of the sum and that simply could not be the case.

In the accounts you are right that when a contract is re calculated the sum is almost always reduced.

Historically it went something like this for both the accounts and FFP&PSR submission

Players signs for £50 million on a 5 year deal. That £50 million included all costs associated with the transfer such as non recoverable VAT and agent fees. Any signing on fee has to be paid over the contract so if there was a £1million signing on fee that would be paid @£200k pa but this sum isn’t amortised it is simply a wage payment . That £50 million is written down at the rate of £10 million pa. That however is complicated is Pfizer the club pays the agents fees as it becomes a “ benefit in kind” and is reported to HMRC as such

After 3 years let’s say he signs a 2 year extension so there was still £20 million value shown in the books and let’s say there were another £2 million in agent fees associated with the new contract negotiations that means the new value is £22 million and that sum would be written off over the 2 years left plus the 2 year extension so £22 m divided by 4 years is £5.5 million pa.

Under the new rules for PSR and FFP the length of time the fee can be amortised is restricted to 5 years . Under the example I give above it’s 7 years. That means that any contract extension can’t have the benefit of re calculating the over a longer period

Where I believe it’s extremely vague is if say the player I illustrate above after 2 years of his second deal signs yet another contract I can’t see that in those financial fair play submissions any agent fees etc can be included in any amortisation charge as he will have exceeded 5 years.

how can a traditional LB not have a position in squad. Lunacy - i hope we are not going in to say one of our FB will always be inverted. Otherwise this may prove to be another costly experiment.

He had a second half cameo yesterday after gusto had to come off and did OK tbh. A couple of good saves including a double block, first with his body then from a kneeling position he headed the second ball out (reminded me of terry). From behind the striker the shot looked like going in before seeing Chilwells head coming into the shot from behind a player in his way.

Tbf, goalkeeper was also diving and may have saved it also...

Watching The Hundred (for my sins, hullo Adam Hurrey) I keep seeing B.C. flogging deodorant. This is one of two different ads. Try spraying some on your hammies, Ben.

Chilwell is our number 1 manscaping advert star since Mount got sold to Man U and Sterling lost the Gillette razor gig.

agree with @just , and Chilly is our best LB when fit - and I would say by quite a large distance.

There are some short memories, and not long ago we were lauding chilly and James as the best LB/RB pairing in the league.

Yes - both have had injuries, but when fit, they should start.

I'd argue they're the best full back pairing in the league. As mentioned, fitness is key. Praying they're both fit for the year and Enzo doesn't just cast Chilwell aside out of stubbornness for this inverted malarkey.

Bit concerning Ben didn't see the pitch yesterday.

First half could've easily played the role Gusto had. Arguably could've played where KDH played too considering how toothless he looked.

I worry he's going to be pushed aside.

Oh if no LW available, chilly could easily be a temp. I just hope he's as good now as he was before the injuries. Just haven't seen enough of him yet to say he's back to his best. Saying that...even when not at his absolute best, he's still better than a few others down that left side.

This is why I don’t understand the club. You give a player a 4yr £200k/w contract and next season he is surplus to requirements & up for sale. You can’t even use the retain some value argument because bar PSG no club in Europe is paying fullbacks ridiculous wages. Club also can’t give him the Conor treatment and try forcing him out because he still has 3yrs left on his contract.

Veiga, Cucu and gusto at a minimum appear ahead of him. Surley he is up for sale and will end up in the same boat as Trev, Broja and Lukaku if he does not leave.

Can the Saudi pro league can come and save us once again ? Really strange we didnt see much of him during pre season, can't see a PL team interested in him with his wages.

He can always take a wage cut ... depends how important playing games is to him I guess ?

I think United could be in for him.

Not on those wages. Shaw is on £150k/w, they are not paying £200k/w for his competition.
